When Ben walks through for the first time and he encounters 'Richard' he is the same age as he is now. Also, if Jacob is a spirit of some kind, maybe the dead relatives etc that people are seeing are really spirits and their souls accumulate into the black mass? Richard could be Jacob, but even if he isn't, he's going to play a much bigger role than anyone initially thought. Also, I saw Jacob in the chair for a split second. It's right after when Ben grabs him by the shoulders and I think he says "you've had your fun" or soemthing, then you can see someone in the chair for a split second. I agree with Anna. Why else would Richard be taking orders from Ben, even though he is older than Ben and undoubtedly manipulated Ben into helping them. He also seems to be helping Locke take over by giving Locke the information about Sawyer, and he also refused to obey Ben when Locke was beating Mikhail. Even if he is not Jacob, I think Richard is going to be one of the most surprising and interesting characters on the island.
