3 X 1 : A Tale of Two Cities

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

Let me say that I missed Lost over the summer. Sure, I had my DVD’s (not until September, grr) and could watch old episodes but there is nothing like the fresh revelations and mysteries that this show brings.

On a negative note (yes, I have to go there) were there far too many commercial interruptions or what? We looked back at TiVo and some of the segments were only six minutes long! WTF? But, somehow the episode still ended up at 42 minutes without commercials.

On with the observations/thoughts!

1. Opening with the eye. Classic.

2. What is Juliet so upset about? She is seemingly trying to calm herself when she is looking in the mirror and when she turns around you can see a cut and potentially a bruise on her shoulder. I am guessing it was Fenry/Ben. Were they married? Or is this some type of commune and he has whoever he wants as his *wife?* If Ben is so powerful how did Juliet manage to break up with him?

3. Juliet is listening to old music, but on a CD none-the-less. Outside contact for sure.

4. Guy in the literature group (Adam) is complaining about the book that there is no metaphor, it’s by the numbers, religious “hokum pokum.” He says it’s science fiction. I think this is a shout out to the viewers because think about what he is saying…

5. Speaking of shout outs! There is alot of buzz that Lost has many parallels to Stephen King books, namely The Dark Tower series. Hello! They are reading Stephen King. There is no doubt to me, however, that they are reading Carrie. Check out the screencap below. For anyone living on a stranded island… remember the power that Carrie had? Psychic powers? The ability to move and control things with her mind?

6. During the meeting when the ground starts to shake it is obvious that they have been through this before as they all get into the door frame (like you would during an earthquake). But then they know to go outside and they are all immediately looking up. Then Ben puts Goodwin and Ethan into action without a second thought. This has happened before.

Such a cool scene!

7. What a lovely community. Of course, they are inside of a huge crater that could be the top of a volcano.

8. Did you notice that when Jack is sitting in his car spying on Sara he is listening to “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller? This is the same song from 2X13 that Sayid picks up on the radio and Hurley comments on. Remember that Glenn Miller disappeared in a plane crash… coincidence?

9. Also, check out the numbers on Jack’s pager. (7) 15,23. And some of the answers on the crossword (raft, heros, necessary evils, prenatal, vital statistics)

10. I love it when Jack hits the glass in his cage. Very clumsy for the man who is normally composed (well, not his temper that’s for sure!).

11. So Kate is not Mr. Friendly’s type. Who is? He could be a) gay [look out Sawyer], b) attracted to highly educated women [sorry Kate], c) a hubby chaser, d) a robot.

12. There are alot of animal sounds around Sawyer out in the jungle, including a rooster crowing. It has been said that a plane carrying zoo animals crashed on the island, but how do you explain chickens? Are the noises just being fed into the speakers to create an illusion of being in the jungle? Could Sawyer have been a POW back home and this is a test of sorts for him? Afterall, they put Kate in a sexy dress and parade her in front of him and then lock her up right across the way!

13. Why are there a fork and knife on Sawyer’s button? If bears were in the cage would they know the purpose of a fork and spoon, hm?

14. Could the building that Sawyer is trapped in front of be an old hotel/resort? Like a Jurassic Park thing. Have people stay in luxury (check out the awning) and walk amongst the animals (notice all the cages around when Sawyer is making a run for it). Also look at the second picture; there appears to be markings like there was a sign hung there before.

15. When Kate sees the tag on the locker that says “Wear This” it reminded me of Alice in Wonderland’s “Drink This.”

16. What is Fenry/Ben doing to Kate? She comes back to the cage with cut up arms, dirty, sweaty and is crying. She appears defeated. Did they tell her something and she didn’t like it and tried to run? Was it what they are going to do to Sawyer and Jack and she is helpless to stop them? Looks like Sawyer and Kate passing a fish biscuit may turn into passing other items to help them escape. Foreshadowing.

17. After the flashback with Jack’s father telling him to “Let it go” Jack hears this same sentiment in the speaker in his cage. Could it be his father or just his imagination?

18. Jack, Sawyer, and Kate all appeared to have had blood drawn from their arms. What would The Others need with their blood? Are the super immune to a specific virus and they are doing experiments on them to find out why?

19. Another button. This one supposedly saves Jack from certain death. Guess that button’s not the bad one.

20. Sara comes to Jack in the end with a file. She tells him it’s basically his life. However, if this is true why does she ask him questions early on like where he was flying from and why. Wouldn’t she already know all of this? Could this file be a fake? She didn’t tell Jack anything that she couldn’t have found on the internet. After Jack’s miracle surgery on Sara there were probably all sorts of articles that you could find on the internet. Like she said, it doesn’t matter who they were it matters more what they are now. This also goes for the survivors. A fresh start.

21. My favorite scene is when Sawyer figures out the cage and is dancing. Then all he gets is a fish biscuit. Love it!

22. After Juliet leaves Jack how does she get on land and to Sawyer so quickly if the Hydra hatch is truly under water? Shouldn’t there be more to it to get to land? Is he really underwater or is this a trick to keep him there? And why does Sawyer keep getting his a$$ kicked? I love the character so I hope that someday (and SOON) he gets a little revenge here!

23. Carl (the guy in the other cage) must either be an “other” Other, a plant, or is one of the Others who just can’t stay out of trouble (there’s always one!). Maybe he will come back and help Sawyer with the promise of taking him back to their camp.

24. Loads of red in the hotel where Jack follows his dad to the AA meeting.

25. So now we know Jack drove his dad back to drink. Tragic.

26. How nice of Fenry/Ben to not care that Jack is going to kill Juliet and then shut her out when the water starts filling the tank.

27. This is the best screenshot I could make of the Hydra symbol:

28. How could Juliet punch Jack so hard he passed out? I have a couple of thoughts. First he’s a whimp. Just kidding. Just look at the guy. Blood shot eyes, dehydrated, and exhausted. My 12 year old could beat him up. Plus remember Ethan’s super human strength when he was beating up Jack so long ago? Maybe they have a super human strength syrum that they take. Like steroids only not so scary. These guys just kill and kidnap people.

29. Ew! This guy plays one creepy character! Way to go creepy guy!

Ah, I have to nominate myself for the Hall of Shame.  After so much anticipation and buildup I fell asleep after Lost.  I had my notes in hand and was discussing the show with my boyfriend and the next thing I knew I woke up and it was midnight! So, I will be posting all of my thoughts tonight after work.  Darn work getting in the way of my blog!

Stay tuned!

Charles Dickens “A Tale of Two Cities”

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

“It was the best of times and the worst of times…” and so begins this famous Charles Dickens novel.

From Wikipedia, the 1st line of the novel’s description, “…(1859) is a historical novel by Charles Dickens; it is moreover a moral novel strongly concerned with themes of guilt, shame, redemption and patriotism.” Sounds familiar, huh?

Some of the symbolism in the novel (again, crossovers to Lost)
1. The color red
2. Fishing
3. Water
4. Stone (Lost is black rock)
5. Sydney (although in the novel this is a person)
6. Theme: The possibility of resurrection and transformation
