Initial Thoughts: The Constant

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Desmond episodes have been so good! I knew we were in for a treat this week.

1. No eye opening this week at the beginning.

2. I found it interesting that Desmond and co. were out in the rain exercising. Rain always seems to be a bad omen.

3. I don’t think that Desmond’s life is being course corrected by finding Daniel in the past. Desmond is exactly on the right path. He has to go AWOL in order to go to prison in order to go on the boating trip around the world in order to make it to the island.

4. Daniel, however, was put back on the correct course by Desmond being there. Desmond said he knew he was there for Daniel, but what was Daniel going to do for him? Daniel kept Desmond on his course. Desmond set Daniel on his correct course (with the numbers for his time travel device).

5. What is messing with their perception of time? The rocket timer showed a 31 minute difference, but the helicopter has been gone a whole day but in reality it’s only about 20 minutes? That could set off a whole new world of speculation about how much time passes and how old Walt is going to be when we see him. Then Sayid points out to Frank that they took off at dusk and landed in the middle of the day. Difference coming and going?

6. Speaking of Walt… kudos to my sister for this one. What if Walt is on the freighter and Desmond and Sayid find him locked up? The only way to save him is to meet with his constant - Michael. Then it could turn out that Michael is also on the freighter, but he is Ben’s “man” on the boat. The one that opened the door to let them out of the medical room. I’m thinking that Michael knows about equipment so maybe he is also the one who cut the wires thinking the freighter people were going to hurt the survivors on the island and/or Ben.

7. The guy on the freighter who first meets the helicopter when it lands doesn’t seem too surprised to find out that Sayid is a flight 815 survivor. But, he asks Frank what the heck he was thinking bringing them to the freighter. Guess that answers the question of whether they were there to save any of them or not.

8. I know I’m skipping ahead, but what if the lady that Desmond meets (last season, the psychic from the jewelry shop) that tells him he can’t go back to Penny because it would mess up the course of events… what if she was actually good? If Desmond would have gone to Penny instead of to the island at that time then he would have not kept his promise not to contact her until 8 years later. Then maybe Penny would have changed her number and he would not have been able to contact her from the freighter. He was on the right course by going on that sailboat to the island.

9. Clean cut Desmond looks really good. Much preferred to dirty, hairy Desmond.

10. Desmond and Minkowski have the sickness! Remember the sickness that Danielle’s group got so she killed them all? And… it appears that the injections/immunizations must somehow either ward off the sickness or somehow counteract it’s effects. Dr Ray was giving it to Minkowski.

11. Omar (freighter guy) says the last port was Figi so they know they are in the Pacific. The news reports, if you recall, were saying they found the plane in the Indian Ocean. I know that whoever planted the fake plane wanted to throw off the scent from the real plane, but I’m just saying that they must have been VERY far off course to not even be close to where the fake plane was found.

12. I’m so glad that Sayid called Jack and let him know that they were OK. It only makes sense that he would do that and it ties up a small loose end (especially when there are so many BIG fish to fry).

13. For any CSI fans, it was funny to see Ecklie as Dr. Ray. He was such a jerk in CSI.

14. Lots of *the* numbers in this episode. 2.342, house #423, lot 2342 on the Black Rock journal, 8 years before Desmond calls Penny… I know that there were more.

15. I wonder how many times Daniel has been to the island. It totally explains why Daniel was crying when he was watching the news report but couldn’t remember why. His brain was fried from the trips to the island. Also explains his bad memory.

16. Daniel says that you can’t change the future. But you can change the past? How does that work? And apparently time travel involves the conscience and not the body as evidenced by Eloise. But, Daniel sends Eloise forward in time to learn the maze and she comes back to run the maze. What is the point of traveling in time if it doesn’t change anything, but it does appear to change or correct things. Desmond kept trying to save Charlie because he was having visions of his death, but fate wanted what it wanted and eventually had it’s way with him. Maybe that is what Daniel meant.

17. The incoming calls from Penny to the freighter… how did she get THAT number? I’m wondering if it had something to do with the guys she had stationed in the arctic. If somehow they were trying to contact freighters in the area they thought may be near the island but it was on behalf of Penny. And why were they under strict orders not to answer?

18. Here is my theory….. Mr Widmore (Penny’s dad) is not a bad guy. We thought he was, but I started thinking otherwise when I saw that he left the water on in the bathroom. Who does that? What if he needed the Black Rock boat log to find the island. He knows that Desmond is there. He didn’t stop him because he knows that Desmond has to go there for whatever reason fate has sent him (in the end because of him the Losties are saved perhaps). Anyway, he tells Desmond in the bathroom that he is not the one that hates him (implying it’s Penny, because she is obviously hurt and mad). Then he gives Desmond her address. Not her phone number, her address. I think that Widmore knows that Desmond has to go to Penny to get the number because of the future event on the freighter (with the Christmas Eve call). It has to happen this way. He is helping Desmond to stay on course. You following me here?

19. I also think that Hanso found the island through that journal and that is why they didn’t want anyone else to see it.

20. Dang it! Why did they have to kill of Minkowski? Fisher Stevens is awesome and I was very much looking forward to seeing him in the show.

21. Poor Sayid. Running around a freighter with these two nuts that weave in and out of consciousness.

22. Penny has a red door. Bad! Hopefully it means nothing.

23. It looks like future Penny is wearing a wedding ring.

24. I was getting all teary eyed when Desmond called Penny. Such an awesome scene! Still the best show on tv bar none.

25. Sayid gets the phone working and lets Desmond call his love. He could have called for help, but decides this call is more important. I am happy that he did, but I worry that when Ben told Sayid (in the future flash) to remember the last time he thought with his heart before his head what happened… I’m hoping that this call doesn’t lead to very bad things.

26. Penny says she has been looking for the past three years for Desmond, but he has been gone for eight. I’m guessing we will see what happened three years ago that prompted her to look for him. And she says that she was *researching* the island and then when Charlie called she knew he was alive & she wasn’t crazy. She will find them, but will it involve the Oceanic Six?

27. Desmond is Daniel’s constant. I’ve got to go back now and watch Daniel’s reaction when he first meets Desmond. I don’t remember it being significant but maybe Daniel forgot him and that is why he wrote it down. But, I also think we saw the journal to show that Desmond traveling “back” in time was real.

28. Next week looks really good too! Jack asks Juliet what she knows but Juliet is the one with a gun to Charlotte telling her to make Daniel stop whatever he is doing. I also heard a siren much like the one that was in the hatch.

29. Thanks for not making fun of my prior theory of Ben being able to time travel. I guess this week proves to me that I was right. He must have to go back in time, though, to get the money that Miles wants. The island is probably Ben’s constant and that is why he wanted to make sure to protect it. But when was he exposed to radiation? My sister thinks that he could have gone through radiation treatment for his back at some point.

Good and Bad

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

“Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy return April 24, with each series airing five new episodes. To round out the Thursday-night knockout punch, execs are (as Ausiello first reported) placing Lost in the 10 pm/ET slot for at least five new episodes.”  Source;  TV Guide

At least five new episodes = Yeah!

10 pm = BOO!

4 X 04: Eggtown

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

1. What does Eggtown mean anyway? Usually the meaning behind the title is much more obvious. But nooooo, they have to go and make us think even more.

* Idea one: “Egg-town is a pejorative term that refers to the days of bartering. A traveling salesman would have to barter his candy or tobacco or shoelaces for different commodities. A poor exchange would be for eggs, a relatively common item that is also highly perishable. Nobody wants to trade for eggs from a traveling salesman because they have their own, so the salesman who accepted an egg in exchange was forced to accept a bad deal. Salesmen would use the term like “If I were you I would stay away from Bogart. That’s an egg-town.” Of course, the lack of trust among salesman was also high, and it was likely that one salesman would lie to another about the quality of a town’s customers to keep them for himself. Invariably, the second salesman ventures into to Bogart only to find it is truly an egg-town. He is either persuaded to not visit a town that has good customers or is tricked into visiting a town that can only offer eggs. The term “egg-town” represents a deal with undesirable outcomes in either case. Source; Lostpedia

* Idea two; “Don’t put your eggs all in one basket.” Seems to apply to Kate’s agenda. And many others (Sawyer, Locke, Hurley, Juliet, etc…). Plus Kate is totally playing Sawyer and Jack off of each other.

* Idea three: Ben eggs on Locke. Nothing new there really.

*Idea four (and my least favorite): It’s a fertility reference. Where is “Eggtown” exactly? This is just too cheesy to believe though.

2. Why open with Locke’s eye when it wasn’t a Locke-centric episode?
locke_eye3.jpg Click to enlarge

3. Here’s the book that Locke chooses for Ben. Check out my other post for a link that will run down the books in this episode.
book2.jpg Click to enlarge

4. Locke is taking this power tripping this a little too far. I think he’s trying to recreate the commune that he was so happy in back home but he fails to see that he’s working with far different conditions - for instance, the people that are there aren’t there because the chose to drop out of society to live on a pot farm. Locke is cooking up a big meal for everyone to get together and sing Kumbayah, but when your personality is like Sawyer and the two prisoners being held (not to mention Old Smokey is lurking somewhere out there) it’s not exactly the perfect ingredients for a happy community.

5. Is it just me or is it weird that Ben’s house is built on a basement thats primary function appears to be a jail. If the peace loving Dharma gang lived there before, what did they need the basement for? The hostiles? Did they take them prisoner here? It’s very Silence of the Lambs to me. Like a secret underground Gitmo.
creepy_locke2.jpg Click to enlarge

6. Locke gives Ben the last two eggs and then kills the chicken. Yeah, really smart. Almost as smart as blowing up Patchy’s communication station. Are there more chickens around somewhere that we haven’t seen? It is Eggtown after all. (That was a joke).

7. Is Ben right? Is Locke more LOST than he ever was? Seems to me Locke was doing just fine for himself before he came to this commune he set up. I would probably chose his side just for the idea of ice cubes and showers, but he doesn’t seem to have it all figured out like he did before. We need Charlie here to make some smart remark or add on a new nickname for Locke. (Remember the Great White Hunter?) But I was glad John walked away from Ben when he did.
locke_ben2.jpg Click to enlarge

8. Ben lived in this house (presumably) for most of his life. I would bet that he also knows a way out of the underground prison. I think he’s staying there to toy with Locke for awhile. If Ben really thinks he’s in danger from the freighter people he will surely disappear.

9. Wow. the Dharma folks shop at WalMart. They sell the Mainstays brand around these parts at least.
kate_mug2.jpg Click to enlarge

10. Here’s a screencap of the guy yelling at Kate when she walks into the courtroom. One site went as far as to play it backwards and you can hear, “We hate you!” Interesting little twist.
guy_yelling2.jpg Click to enlarge

11. Kate’s lawyer. I think that this is just to get us talking, but check this out about the actor:

Her lawyer, played by Shawn Doyle, previously acted alongside Elizabeth Mitchell, Juliette, in the film Frequency. In the film, he plays a serial killer named Jack Shepard who kills Mitchell’s character after she saves him because her son messes with time travel. Source: Wikipedia

kates_lawyer2.jpg Click to enlarge

12. Interesting choice of cities for Jin. Especially considering Kate robbed a bank there and Sawyer’s baby’s momma (Cassie) lives there.
map2.jpg Click to enlarge

13. I want to go on the record (again) saying that Jin and Sun are the remaining two of the Oceanic Six. I know that some of you will argue that Aaron was number five, but I don’t know that he’ll count necessarily. And on an aside, if Kate wasn’t preggers when she was taken into custody by the Marshall, then how does she explain the baby (assuming she’s telling everyone back home that it’s hers) when they were only on the island for a few months? She would have to be bringing him back with her from the island in order to claim him as her own. You can’t shove a 6 month old baby up your dress and *pretend* to give birth. Not around where I live, at least. People might get suspicious of that.

14. Why does Sun want to raise her baby back in Korea? Yes, she was running from Jin that day in the airport but she was also running from her father. If she goes back it will be more of the same and Jin will be working again for her dad. Gosh, maybe there is another reason we don’t know yet! Do you think?

15. Creepy boathouse. Looks so much like Jacob’s shack, too.
boathouse.jpg boathouse2.jpg Click to enlarge

16. Oh boy, I hate seeing Kate in a red jumpsuit. Red has not been a good color for anyone on the island. What started out as a joke (the red shirts) has turned into a harbinger of doom and death.
jumpsuit1.jpg Click to enlarge

17. The DA decides to try the case herself. Momma decides she doesn’t want to testify against Kate. Hm, seems like someone might be pulling some strings here…. with the bazillion counts against her and all she gets is probation? And let’s talk again about why the DA is so set with her staying in California? Must be someone or something outside the state that Kate could connect with and make trouble with (fill in the blank for whoever is pulling the strings). Could be Ben. He is very rich.

18. I don’t think that Kate stole baby Aaron. Remember on the island she really didn’t want to hold him. Back home she won’t take a deal for prison time even knowing the charges she faces. I think this is because she made a promise to Claire to take care of him and she knows therefore that she can’t go to prison.

19. Remember that Aaron is also a very special child. The Others kept trying to nab him. The psychic didn’t want her to adopt the baby out. It has been hinted all along he is special. I think Kate knows this. I think that she *has* to pass the baby off as hers because if the *bad guys* found out who the baby really was they would probably try to take him. I think that is also why she was so dead set against bringing him into the courtroom - she knew the media coverage around and wants to keep him out of the spotlight. Not to mention he is still a very young child and I’m not sure what he could possibly do to help build her character in court. Outside of the cute factor of course.

20. jack2.jpg Click to enlarge

21. OK so according the Jack they crashed on an island in the South Pacific yet the *airplane* was found off the coast if Indonesia. That is one hell of a swim. I guess really is a hero.

22. I think that whoever the two additional survivors Jack mentions (he says 8 survived but we know only 6 make it back) are survivors that must get killed in whatever dramatic events are about to happen to get these six off of the island. Sawyer? Michael & Walt? Locke?

23. Foffman mentions in the comments that scenes are remniscent of prior scenes in the show. Here’s one - the DA asks Jack if he loves Kate. Just like when (I forgot his name from last season) asks Kate when they are in the cages if she loves Sawyer as he’s about to kill him. She says yes to save Sawyer. I know Jack says no, but later tells Kate he was lying.

24. Why does Kate keep wearing dirty clothes? There are clothes around her size and a washer and dryer.
dirty clothes2.jpg Click to enlarge

25. So Miles can *arrange* to *amend* Ben’s current situation (being held hostage)? And Miles knows that Ben has access to millions of dollars in cash. And Miles suggests to Kate she’s better off on the island (something he’s not telling her?) and that “Who knows, maybe you didn’t survive the crash.” Miles may be a creep, but he has *some* conscience (he gave some of the money back to the grandma). Maybe he’s trying to warn Kate in a subtle way not to go back. Kate wanted more in this scene than to just know if they knew she was a fugitive. That wrap wouldn’t just go away. I think we’ll see more going on with these two.

26. Is it just me or does Kate’s mom bear a striking resemblance to Gwenyth Paltrow?
mommydearest2.jpg Click to enlarge

27. Remember that Ben *healed* Juliet’s sister Rachel when he wanted to keep Juliet on the island. I’m thinking that Ben has something to do with Kate’s mom living so far past what the doctor’s had expected. Maybe he can’t save her but he can keep her alive. But it won’t come without a price.

28. Dan’s memory is getting better. Maybe he’s not perfect, but it’s better. I think that it’s the healing powers of the island. I think this also tells us why Dan was crying when he saw the plane crash on tv. He couldn’t remember why, but something he knew at one point touched him. What if he has some type of electric shock therapy and it fried his memory? He kind of needs it though if he is going to get them back to the boat (they need the coordinates). I’m sure it will also come into play for scenes we haven’t seen yet.

29. The card that Dan remembers is also in a picture on Aaron’s wall back home. Wonder why this is going to be significant? Unless *gasp* it’s just another meaningless connection that drives us obsessed Lost fans crazy!
cards2.jpg kate_nursery2.jpg Click to enlarge

30.  The phones the “Freighties” have sure to have long lasting batteries don’t they?

31.  Kate has a really nice house which I’m sure Oceanic paid for.  But she has those awful red flowers that appear everywhere on the island in front.
kates_house2.jpg    Click to enlarge

32.  For the record, this is not Juliet’s sister Rachel.  Not even the same actress.

33.  I would guess that Aaron is at least 2 to 3 years old here.

Initial Thoughts: Eggtown

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

1. Eye opening… at the opening. But you knew that. It was Locke’s eye.

2. Ben in the room that the “real” Sawyer was being held. Remember last season when Locke first encounters him all tied up?

3. Loved Locke’s line about the book he gives Ben. “Maybe you’ll catch something you missed the second time around.” Not that I, *ahem,* would watch anything a second time for things I missed….

4. Locke should have know Ben was playing him when Ben asks about the other prisoner, “Miles, is it?” Duh, Ben is the one that told Locke all about the four that came from the freighter and all about Charlotte’s background. So he obviously would know Miles’ name.

5. Do you see the bearded guy yelling at Kate when she was walking through the paparazzi into the courtroom? He really stuck out to me but I couldn’t make out what he was saying. Will for sure have to screen cap him.

6. Katheryn ANNE Austin. We had talked before about Kate possibly being the Annie from Ben’s childhood on the island.

7. Wow, Jin learned English pretty quickly didn’t he? If they’ve only been there 100 days and Jin only found out about Sun’s secret approximately half way, that means he had somewhere in the neighborhood of a month or more to learn the language. Impressive.

8. Interesting that when Jack came to the beach and told Sun and the others that Dan and Charlotte were there to save them, Dan looks down. Yeah, not their primary objective.

9. Creepy when Locke’s hands were all bloody from killing the chicken.

10. Loved it when Hurley asks Kate if she Scooby Doo’d him when she found out where Miles was.

11. Didn’t the boat house look like Jacob’s cabin?

12. Miles wanted to be in the boathouse? I think there was more to this than just wanting to get to Ben. There is a bigger plan at work.

13. The numbers again. Duncan (Kate’s lawyer) tells her to plead down to 15 years. Prosecutor offers four initially.

14. Charges against Kate (I think we’ve seen them all happen). Fraud, Arson, Assault of a Federal Officer, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Grand Larceny, Grand Theft Auto, and Murder in the First Degree. And 15 years for all this! She’s crazy not to take it unless (here we go again) she knows something. Maybe made a deal with Creepy Eyed Man and his people? They could have swayed the mom and the prosecuting attorney.

15. Of course the “him” is her son but how much time had to have passed since this epi and when Kate meets up with Jack (in the scene at the end of last season)? She says “he” will worry where she is. In the middle of the night why would her kid know she was gone unless it was much later and he was older. And why would the attorney consider bringing in this small child to a courtroom?

16. Busy signal on the phone to the boat? Why? What have they done with Sayid and Desmond? Guess we’ll find out before the first eight end.

17. Wow! Was Jack smoking hot in that courtroom or what? Guess Kate wasn’t the only one that cleaned up nicely.

18. Jack says that there were eight survivors. Maybe…. Michael and Walt make it back to land before the other six? Otherwise there would have to be two that die trying to get back and only the other six of the eight make it.

19. Whatever happens to get the six off of the island must be very dramatic. It must be something that really compromises their morals and feeds all of the post-island guilt. Jack and Kate couldn’t even look at each other in the courtroom when he was telling what happened. I WANT TO KNOW!

20. Loved the movies that Hurley has to choose from. “Xanadu” or “Satan’s Doom.” And, they looked to be VHS tapes. Again with the old school technology.

21. The only words I could hear during the Xanadu song was “Open your eyes…” ironically.

22. OK so Kate uses Sawyer for more than just getting Ben to Miles. So what, Miles knew she was a fugitive. What did she really want to know from him? I think there is more here.

23. So Ben is rich. And Miles knows who he is and “what he can do.” I can’t believe I’m going to say this… but can he somehow time travel? I don’t think he has a machine or anything but perhaps he’s found a way to get off and on the island through some sort of time rip. If I could do that I would get some winning lottery numbers and get rich but perhaps Mr. Fenry used it for evil. OK not evil but something very bad that makes someone off the island spend lots of money to find him.

24. I’m very curious to find out what the $3.2 million is for. Charlotte is already in on it. I’m sure that Miles and Charlotte had a plan before Miles let himself get caught.

25. Daniel has a terrible memory. Remember that. It will be important later.

26. It sounds like Charlotte tells Regina on the phone that Cassie wasn’t answering the other line. Remember that Sawyer’s baby’s momma was Cassie. Coincidence (or fate)?

27. Can I just say that this season has rocked!!

28. Locke is a FREAK putting the grenade in Miles’ mouth. Either he really knows something huge or how could the Six possibly leave everyone else behind with him?

29. Kate can’t get pregnant. Eggtown. Was there some kind of X-Files-esque conspiracy to steal her eggs? Falopian tubes removed and cannot get the eggs to hatch?

30. Red flowers in front of Kate’s house. Those things are everywhere!

31. Aaron. I didn’t see that one coming. I can see why Jack didn’t want to come and see the baby. Guilty conscience. Just another reason to head back to the island. Claire must have given Kate the baby just in case they didn’t get back to rescue them. Not sure why Claire wouldn’t have gone instead of Kate. But, if Desmond saw Claire and Aaron getting lifted into the helicopter I would say that is a sure sign that we will see a rescue of the others by the end of the show. Eeek! I don’t even want to think about the end of the show.

32. I agree. Who cares if Kate leaves the state? I think after this she’s going to have to leave the state to find Penny to get back to the island and save the others left behind. Who really wants her to stick around?

33. Next week looks really cool as they are flying into the electrical storm. If they left in the helicopter at least one day before Jack radioed the boat can it be possible that time moves differently going to and from the island? We know they make it to the boat because the other freighter people are in the preview. I also saw a chalkboard….then again…. it is a Desmond flashie. He has short hair in the preview too. And…. per NBC the flight to the boat causes some unexpected side effects.  Another weird Desmond time/head trip?

You’ve been on this island for 100 days living all primitive and stuff. I would be doing the happy dance to have access to a refrigerator. I would miss ice cubes and the way stuff freezes in the back for the refrigerator when it’s turned up too high. Ahh, the comforts of home.

Kate’s Commercial

4X 03: The Economist

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

See my last post for initial thoughts.

1. Interesting to open with eyes closed. We’ve always seen the one open eye. Obviously, Sayid is different than the others. His eyes are closed when it seems like theoretically his eyes are more *open* than others. But, Sayid hasn’t had a healing or eye opening on the island. If anything, he is more of a killer in the future than before the island.
sayid_eye copy.jpg Click to enlarge

2. I didn’t post a picture of a Muslim in prayer but it doesn’t look to me like Sayid is necessarily in a prayer position (anyone out there have insight into this?). Then he opens his eyes and is looking at Naomi’s body. He wants her body off the island for some reason. Either it has something to do with dead bodies somehow being inhabited by Jacob or he is transporting something in/on her body or he knows Naomi or something about her that makes him treat her respectfully.
sayid_kneel2.jpg Click to enlarge

3. Naomi’s bracelet inscription pictured here. Instead of Elsa just happening to own the same bracelet, maybe Sayid gave it to her (he kept Naomi’s)? Either it had sentimental value because he cared for Naomi for some reason or it was a connection back to the island. Or, it could be a bracelet given by whomever is hiring them to kill off Ben.
bracelet_inscription1.jpg Click to enlarge

4. Miles is getting to be quite the funny guy. Miles to Frank: “In case you zoned out while you were tweezing your goatee, one of these yahoos took Charlotte prisoner.” Very high strung.

5. Dane pointed out in comments on the last post that the seven iron is what they were using on the island. Sayid is using the seven iron here. Guess he grew to like the club. Good catch!

6. I don’t think that only 6 from the island have to be the only ones that make it back to land. If Juliet makes it back she probably wouldn’t want to make a big media spectacle because how would she possibly explain or prove where she has been? I think that it’s possible some of the “natives” could make it back but would have to just try to blend back into society without a media fuss.

7. Anyone work at a golf course and know when the sprinklers come on? I thought it was at night which would mean that perhaps someone turned these on to help cover the gunshot and wash away evidence? Also, symbolic of course.
sprinklers1.jpg Click to enlarge

8. I thought it was funny that Sayid was pretending that he couldn’t read maps. Ironically, he was the one navigating Danielle’s map and the map of the underwater hatch.

9. So Charlotte knows that Ben has a spy back on the freighter boat. I would probably be telling my other team mates when I was reunited about this piece of info first thing. Yet so far she hasn’t said anything about it to them.

10. Theories on where Jacob’s shack is? Hurley saw it flip positions. The creators have been saying since day one that everything can be explained. I guess they didn’t mean in reality, but rather in possibility? I’m not aware of any disappearing cabin theories out there.

11. I think that Jack sends Kate with Sayid on the mission to get Charlotte because he is trying to protect her. Remember when Jack was doing surgery on Ben and told her to run and save herself? I think Jack knows that there is trouble coming and he thinks that Kate will be safer back at the barracks. You know Jack, if he thinks he’s getting off the island he would come back and save her.

12. Elsa’s employer is “old fashioned” when it comes to technology (ie; the pager). Remember back on the island they were using a very old school computer in the hatch and had a record player. There has to be a connection.
pager1.jpg Click to enlarge

13. Why does Frank tell Daniel that it’s ok to use the phone but to hang up right away if Mankowski gets on the phone?

14. Radio signals and the phones go through right away to the freighter yet animated objects have a time delay. When Daniel sets up his experiment Regina gets the signal “clearly” yet the beacon is delayed.

15. I’ve read a lot of talk about Jack and Frank’s conversation regarding the Red Sox winning the Series. I don’t think that Frank really has a reaction like he’s surprised at Jack’s question. It just seemed like banter to me.

16. 31 minute time delay. So time is moving slower on the island. Anyone want to do the math? After 100 days how far behind in time would they be? There are also biblical scriptures in Daniel that correspond to these numbers if you care to look them up.

17. Ben’s bookshelf. I doubt they were reading the Qur’an in the bookclub.

18. Some people are saying that Michael Faraday is on the money. It would be a fun little “Where’s Waldo” of the show. Thoughts?

19. We can see passports for Brazil, New Zealand in his hands and Japan in the drawer.

20. This is the best shot I could make of Ben’s passport info. It looks like he was born March 23, 1962 which would make him 42. One of the numbers! I’m sure there are better copies out there so we can see the name and other info on the passport.

21. Here’s the scene where Saywer comes walking into the room where Kate is looking under the bed. It looks just like when he was a kid and his dad came walking into his room and he was hiding under the bed.

22. Hurley had some great lines in this one. I loved it when he said to Sayid he knew he could hurt him when he saw him break that guys neck with his break dancing move.

23. Was Miles really a bargaining chip for Sayid? Locke already had him locked up so why would Locke see Miles as a trade for Charlotte? I’m thinking there was another trade made that we will find out about later.

24. Maybe Frank hasn’t heard of Penelope Widmore, but I would bet he has heard the name Widmore… perhaps his boss?

25. So could Sayid’s last mistake of thinking with his heart instead of his gun have anything to do with Nadia? She was his great love, certainly he would have gone looking for her when he got back. And I want to know which friends Sayid is protecting - the Oceanic 6 or the ones left on the island?

Initial Thoughts: The Economist

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I started off thinking this episode was really slow then true to form, for every one answer we got another 12 questions.

WARNING: If you haven’t watched the episode don’t read this. There is a major twist at the end.

1. What is up with this bracelet? It reads, “N, I’ll always be with you. RG.” Elsa is wearing one that we can see when she is getting ready for the opera and when Sayid is in bed with her right before he kills her. Is it something with the organization Sayid/Ben/Naomi works for? Does Mr Creepy Eyed Man have something to do with it? He is the one that hired Naomi. Seems MCEM would also want Sayid for “missions” considering all the skills he has and that he is a ruthless killer. Sayid gets to the boat and could be Ben’s mole that he can’t tell them the name of. My sis is convinced that Sayid is the mole.

2. Red towel on Sayid’s golf bag should have been a sign that someone was going to die (red has been the death theme all three seasons). But where does this guy who pulls up to Sayid even come from? I may not know much about golf but you don’t just come up to someone who’s about to hit a shot in the middle of the course for nothing. He’s not trying to pass and he even offers him a ride to the next hole. But he can clearly see Sayid is in the middle of this hole. Then, when Sayid tells him who he is, the man seems frightened and tries to leave. Did Ben send him there and why does this guy need a killing? Is he part of Dharma and they are slowly killing them off one by one? Ben killed them on the island so I’m sure he’s not above killing them off the island. This new guys tells Sayid he’s the only one on the course all morning. Suspicious, don’t you think?

3. I just watched the scene again. This guys works for Oceanic or whoever set it up to look like they died on that plane. THAT is why he freaks out when Sayid tells him who he is.

4. Looking back at the “previously on…” why was Frank studying every single name on the manifest if they thought or were told that there were no survivors from the flight?

5. So starting in the cafe, Sayid and Elsa were both playing each other. Ben actually sends them both there.

6. I knew the second Elsa had that red dress on that she was going to die. Then to see that bracelet, it was all over for her.

7. Loved, loved, loved Sawyer’s suggestion to start shooting off Ben’s toes. First you start with the big toe and send that piggy to market. Then you move on to the roast beef. Hilarious!

8. Interesting that everyone seems to have insight into the survivors but Frank didn’t know about Sayid’s background.

9. Why can’t Locke see the cabin? Aaron starts crying when they get to the location also.

10. Notice all the playground equipment at the barracks? There weren’t any children. Why all the equipment? It didn’t look old like it had not been used since Dharma. Miles even says something about a daycare being there.
11. So there is a 1/2 hour (31 minutes to be exact) time lag from on versus off the island. This should explain some of the growth when Walt comes back.

12. I thought for sure when Sayid found Ben’s secret closet he was also going to find a secret way off of the island. He might have found something for all we know and that is why Sayid wanted off of the island. Maybe he thought he could use the worm hole back to the island to save the others. Why doesn’t Sayid tell the others what he has found? It’s more costumes (like the ones from the lockers).

13. Why does Kate call Sawyer “James?” Everyone using proper names has been weird.

14. Did you notice when Kate is looking under the bed at Ben’s house the feet she sees coming in look just like when Saywer was a young boy and he saw the feet of his father coming into his room.

15. How sweet, Sawyer wants to play house with Kate. Just in time for Valentines’s Day!

16. The list! Another list!

17. Why does Sayid care about getting Naomi’s body back to the boat? This guys knows so much that we haven’t seen yet! He knows something to do with that bracelet that makes her special.

18. Why does Desmond want to go to the boat when he knows it’s not Penny’s boat? Obviously Frank and Dan “do” know about Penny from the looks they gave each other. Will be interested to see the boat scenes but I’m sure there won’t be much of that until near the end of the 8 episodes. Who does Desmond think on the boat is going to tell him about Penny when it’s NOT HER BOAT!

19. I wonder if Kate really wanted to stay behind with Sawyer or if Sayid pretty much left her.

20. Why does Sayid meet Ben in the dog kennel of all places and when did Ben get to know so much about medicine?

21. Who are they after (Ben and Sayid)? Must be the people who either purposely crashed the plane or covered it up and left them to die.

22. In the rerun before the new epi, the pop up said that the woman with Dan was not his wife but was his caretaker. This guys must have issues.

23. Sayid says something to Elsa about the old technology her boss uses. Should have been a clue that her boss was Ben.

24. Sayid closes Elsa’s eyes tenderly just like he does to Naomi. Still thinking there is more going on there.

25. When Desmond asks Frank flat out if he has ever heard of “Penny” Widmore he and Dan both say no. but perhaps they know the Widmore name, not Penny specifically. Maybe they were hired by Poppa Widmore.

26. Jack was so set to get off the island and now he lets the dead body of Naomi go before he gets on the helicopter. Yes, now that Kate decided to stay behind.

27. So Sayid is killing to protect his friends? Which ones, the Oceanic Six or all those left back on the island?
