4 X 01: The Beginning Of The End: Part One

Feeling a bit rusty at these recaps. Plus, I want to download and watch the epi again. Here are my knee jerk reactions with only one (gasp!) watch through…

1. It’s all about course correcting. They do have to go back. Charlie told Hurley. Jack said it to Kate. Hurley told Jack. They have to go back, they need them. They must go back and save the other survivors. Man this is going to be so good and boy will Jack owe Locke a big apology.

2. Oceanic Six. Guess the rumors are right. Six get off the island. For now at least. Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Jin and Sun. That is my guess.

3. I loved the symbolism of the knife in Naomi’s back.

4. Did you see the picture on the chalkboard behind Hurley when he was talking to the scary eye’d fake Oceanic lawyer? I saw a shark and a palm tree. Will need to screencap that.

5. No one gets left behind. In the end of last season Kate tells Sawyer they have to go back (to the beach). Sawyer told her that there’s always someone to go back for. Kate always goes back. Live together, die alone. I think it’s pretty obvious that they are going to find a way back to the island.

6. Desmond saw Claire in one of his *visions* getting rescued in a helicopter. They all know about Penny. I think Penny will be the ticket back and my guess would be Kate, being the one that always plans the rescue, will contact her back on land to make it happen.

6. Man Charlie looked good. I hope he shows up more in the flashies (can’t just say forward or backwards now).

7. Loving Hurley at Jacob’s shack. Was it Locke’s eye that Hurley saw? Was it Christian in the rocker? Again, totally needing those screencaps. Will do a follow up blog for those kinds of tibits. Why did the shack disappear.

8. I can’t wait to hear Locke’s explanations for what he’s been up to. I was so glad to hear they were headed back to the barracks. But where did the Others go? What is the temple? Anyone on the island wondering this? Maybe Locke already knows.

9. So I’m wondering if a deal was struck for the Oceanic Six that they would be rescued but that they couldn’t tell that there were other survivors. Maybe Jack thought he’d lie his way back to land and then organize another *army* to go back and save the others. Something must have happened though because he was hell bent on saving everyone. Something has them all scared.

10. I can’t imagine that the Oceanic Six will get off of the island this season (even if we would have had the 16 episodes). That is a lot of main characters to take off of the show.

11. I also was very surprised to see that Rose agreed to stay with Jack. What about the cancer? Won’t it come back if she leaves the island?

12. I still think in the end that some of the Losties are going to chose to stay on the island.

… more to come… I want to watch it again and get a copy to run screen caps. Welcome BACK to my obsession!

I seriously don’t even know what to say. Tonight’s premiere was SO FREAKING FABULOUS!!!!! My mind was being blown all over the place! The Oceanic Six? Hurley back in the loony bin? Charlie showing up to Hurley and being seen by someone else??? WHAT THE HELL???

Pure perfection is what it was. PURE LOST PERFECTION!

  2. Gitsie Girl Says:

    Agreed.

  3. Scott Cramer Says:

    1. Course correcting… Like the psychic lady told Desmond, right? That there’s no way around it. Like Desmond telling Charlie that no matter what he does to save him, he’s going to die. The future gets what the future wants.

    1. Jack owing Locke an apology? Yeah… but something is amiss. In the flash forward Hurley tells Jack that he’s sorry he went with Locke and that he should have gone with Jack. Implies that something none-too-good happened with Locke’s decision to make the then-impassioned Hurley think it was actually a mistake to have gone with Locke.

    7. Looked like a skeletal corpse rocking in the chair… Haven’t frame by framed it yet to see. Hey! I’ll just do it now. Thank you TiVo. Let’s see… Lantern burning on the table… Freaky dog painting (up on the wall this time, didn’t it used to be sitting on the floor?)… then very dark screen with… shoes? yes shoes at the floor level. laces. white or light colored… then it almost looks like skeletal hands with basically nothing that can be seen of a body, and a dark profile of a head on top, all rocking in a chair… THEN the freaky eye that comes up! Does NOT look like Locke. Truthfully looks a little like Gene Simmons from Kiss (but isn’t he on Celebrity Apprentice?) and it’s a VERY crazy, angry looking eye. I’d run too.

Awesome mini-recap. Looking forward to more.

    Additional from me…
Can’t get this out of my head. Jack/Kate are in Jack’s group. Hurley is in Locke’s group. Yet all three are among the rescued. Somehow the two groups or members of the two groups came together and ended up off the island and everybody else is still stuck there. Hurley was none too happy with Locke if he was apologizing to Jack, so Jack was right that it WAS a rescue? But why then did not everyone get rescued? Seems like Locke would have been correct then if something nefarious is indeed going on in the future and Jack is wanting to go back! How can both groups have been wrong? Here’s a whack scenario…

Jack or Kate or both of them can’t leave well enough alone and go after Locke’s group because they want them to “come to their senses” and be rescued. Let’s see… who went with Locke?

Locke’s group: Locke, Hurley, Claire and Baby Aaron, Some dude with glasses who grabs someone else’s hand but I only see glasses dude actually walking up, Danielle, Ben, Danielle’s Daughter and her boyfriend, followed by someone else with a torch, and then some people were shuffling about while Rose/Bernard were talking so am assuming some various other people also went, and Sawyer. But I only counted 10, I think, in the group when they walked out to the soundtrack of dramatic LOST music and pouring rain.

So, the “rescue” team finds the barracks first, because they are honing in on the radio which Kate still has in her possession. Some kind of altercation between Jack and Locke occurs but the “rescue” helicopter proves itself as rescue. They start loading up people. Remember Desmond’s vision did show Claire and baby going up into the copter? Then Hurley, then Kate, Sawyer or an extra dude, and then Jack which would make six. Why those six? Why not the others too? Locke messes something up where they have to leave in a hurry (he is prone to blowing things up) or capacity of the chopper, or the group sub-factions off yet again, or Ben is there and he has a way of making things weird. But whatever happens, the copter gets off the ground (maybe Sawyer sacrifices to get Jack onboard because HE loves Kate and wants her to be happy with Jack – these guys are all about self-sacrifice) and the lucky extra dude gets to go). After getting off the ground, the copter has to leave and they can’t find their way back onto the island again. Oceanic or WHOMEVER is pulling the real conspiracy theory strings threaten the six to stay secret or bad things will happen to them and their families or perhaps Kate’s freedom in the outside world is the bargaining chip. Or maybe something else happens (Locke is prone to blowing things up) and they think everybody else is dead and they really are the only ones to make it out. Still they get bribed with the secrecy deal for whatever reason. Umm… Okay, I’m done. ;-)

Just wanted to add that screencaps on the Fuse show that it was asolutely, 100% Christian Shephard sitting in Jacob’s chair when Hurley looked in. Now what this means, I have no clue — but it’s fascinating to ponder upon.

  6. Jay Says:

Good catch on the shark and the palm tree. I don’t think there’s any way Rose and Bernard leave. Remember Hurley went with Locke and he still got off the island. Will be very interesting to see how the Oceanic 6 eventually leave.

Lost is back! I’m soooooooo happy!

  7. Andrea Says:

Pretty much agreeing with almost all your observations. Some of them I’ve been thinking about for a while. And Charlie did look good. Oh gosh. Drooled a bit. I hope he comes back a lot. And flashies, great word :D

I’m a little surprised at how empathetic Sawyer seems to have gotten. Granted Charlie did die and he was close to almost all of them… but after killing Locke’s dad, I was expecting more surliness. But perhaps it really started a healing process for him. I’m trying to decide if it was out of character for him or not… But I’m used to his back and forth between sometimes kindness and being a jerk. Sensitive Sawyer… interesting.

I’m of the opinion the two groups will have a lot of tension between one another, and since last season I’ve been sure something nasty is going to go down. Well duh, but for our losties. Something that severs their friendship and trust with one another.

An idea I had and pondered a little… maybe Hurly was in the coffin at the viewing Jack went to? Just a thought because it looks like those who survived will have a lot of tension about telling the truth of what went down. Maybe it causes a lot of rifts. It obviously does for Jack and Kate. Jack says he wasn’t a friend and Kate wants nothing to do with whoever the dead guy is. So whoever it is really pissed them off. So the only thing I really have to think about is if that was a normal sized coffin/if hugo would need a bigger one, etc. The Ep gave me so many ideas and things to think about. Yays :D -dances around-

Saw Harold’s name on the opening credits and I was really hoping Michale was back in this ep. Oh well. :( OH oh the dude in the coffin could also be Michael! (probably not though!) But I’m still psyched I knew Jack and Claire were siblings long before the theory was running around, hehe.

There is def a deal. Something has them scared and it’ll really work perfectly for a fanfic/music video i was planning.

So the Richard character signed up for another show.. I wonder how he’ll be written out. And I’m going to miss Tom.

Wondering how Locke’s group will handle or treat Ben. Will he escape? Will the others attack them to get ben back? Questions… but no answers.

Thanks for input Heather! I had always been convinced Christian was really dead, he wasn’t milling about the island or anything weird. But the fact his body was gone always bothered me a bit. Dead people don’t often stay dead – or when we think they’re dead. So good to know it was Christian.

And to Scott as well- During the episode I thought that it was Locke’s eye. He was hanging with Jacob or something. Gah, more Lost now!

This is my hope for the very end of the show: That the 6 go back to the island, fix whatever went wrong and they all stay on the island and everyone cohabitates nicely… I’ve just always wanted them to stay on the island because it was a place of rebirth for them all.

  8. Eric Says:

    1. Naiomi – When she says “tell my sister I love her,” is her sister her twin?

    2. Hurley – His flash foreward is earlier than Jack’s flash foreward – No?

  9. Foffman Says:

    Wow, awesome episode.

I think we all agree we’re pretty frickin excited for the show to be back on!!!

    Couple things…
I’m thinking the eye in the shack is not Locke’s. I am about 99.7% certain it is the same eye as the one that showed up when Ben and Locke were in the shack and everything was going crazy. And in that scene, it wasn’t Locke’s eye (at least, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t). And also, there’s no way the writers would make something so obvious. I could be wrong, but I’m gonna believe it wasn’t Locke’s eye.

And there’s a pretty simple explanation to the whole Hurley’s-not-the-only-one-who-sees-dead-Charlie idea. The guy that told Hurley, “hey, there’s a dude staring at you”…. Hurley made that guy up too.

Still waiting to see how Richard is so ageless.

And I’m also still waiting to see if Jack ever made that putt from season 1, when Sawyer bet Shannon two bottles of sunscreen. I think we’ll never know…

  10. R Says:

Nice recap… Incredible show, never lets me down… I too thought maybe Naomi’s “sister” could be a twin for some reason… GG Jack may owe Locke an apology on some level, but also Hurley told Jack he is “sorry he went with Locke”… Wow. Wow. Wow. Good stuff.

  11. Scott Cramer Says:

I heard a couple people say that they watched it but they thought it was “just okay”. What!? Sigh. I get tired of the “instant gratification” fans who want all the answers RIGHT NOW. I got a little tired of being drug along on some things too… but overall, I don’t want everything fed to me right now. What’s the point? Then it would be a mini-series, not a series. And it would be over.

Now… that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to know what the little toy airplane was all about oh so long ago… or Hurley winning the lottery with the “numbers”…

But so far as answers and intrigue… I like the beginning of this season very much. Damn writer’s strike is going to hit home harder pretty soon.
