4 X 02: Confirmed Dead (Part 2)

See my last post for initial thoughts.

1. Why is the center of the signal going out on North America? Look at the bottom of the phone. At the very least, if they had headed out from Australia, wouldn’t the center of the signal be more in to the West?

2. As I said in my last post, someone gave the *Christian One* these coordinates so that the plane would be found, not for sunken treasure.

3. Why is Dan so upset when he hears about Oceanic 815 being found? On one hand, I thought that he is just kind-of a nutty, sensitive guy. But, after seeing all four of the flashbacks, I think that each of them knew something about the plane AND he’s a nutty, sensitive guy. I was really digging the morning hair too.

4. Daniel Faraday. Apparently, a “faraday” is an electrical unit. If you click on the link, also check out Michael Faraday, a physicist who established the basis for the magnetic field concept in physics.

5. Ben doesn’t seem very pleased but Locke looks happy or amused that Hurley knows about Jacob’s shack.

6. Colonel Kurtz. Yeah, I see the resemblance. And, I missed hearing Sawyer’s nicknames for everybody!

7. There is some serious biohazard gear in Daniel’s pack, besides the gas mask. Maybe Ben was actually telling the truth when he warned them that the people on the boat would kill every living creature on the island.

8. I found it odd that Daniel wore a tie. He’s going to a potentially dangerous island where they are wearing bullet proof vests, packing gas masks and carrying guns and Daniel found it appropriate to wear a tie. I love this guy!

9. Here is a shot of the boy in the picture at the grandma’s house. I don’t think that we’ve seen him before but, he could become someone from the Lostie’s flashbacks. I was thinking they were showing the pictures more to show that Miles had a conscience, even if it were only there for a moment.

10. Miles Strohm. Like “maelstrom?” Another Edgar Allen Poe reference.

11. Posters for “Battle Royale” and a large number 15 on the wall. Battle Royale is a novel about a group of children who are gassed on a bus and taken to a deserted island to fight each other to the death.

12. I really liked the lighting they used in this scene while Miles is talking to the dead grandson.

13. Daniel says that the light doesn’t scatter right. Interesting because scatter has to do with reflection. I still think that mirrors or some type of reflection is being used here on the island (in the past, I’ve speculated that the use of reflections could be how to explain Walt appearing but talking backwards, the big dipper in the sky being backwards, the mirrors in Desmond’s hatch, and even why the whispers were backwards). It could explain why Hurley saw the cabin in two different spots. Scatter was also the name of a monkey owned by Elvis. Maybe he’s on the island.

13. When Jack tells Miles to put the gun down it reminded me of when Jack & company met up with Mr. Friendly in the woods when the Others had kidnapped Kate. Mr. Friendly warned them that they were surrounded and then the torches lit up. Here, Jack warns Miles then there are gunshots from Sayid & others to show that they are surrounded. The Losties have become The Others to the boat people.

14. I’ve been thinking about the idea that time moves differently off the island, faster perhaps (would explain how Walt has grown so much). But I haven’t been able to establish a real time line off of the island. When the plane is discovered could be a month after it crashed but then when the four boat people arrive it could be a year after the crash, only the Losties think it’s only been 92 days. Maybe we will know when Michael reappears and thinks he’s been gone a very long time when in fact on the island it only seems like weeks.

15. I still think that as remote of an area that this dig is at, this could have been another one of Dharma’s experimental sites. Maybe there weren’t any people at the time, only animals. Maybe it’s been such a well kept secret that Charlotte is excited to find out it’s real.

16. This dog always means trouble is around.

17. More red flowers just in the middle of nowhere.

18. I’m sure there are those of you out there who remember Kate’s toy airplane and wonder if they will ever resolve that story line. Probably not. And there was a huge reminder in this one for those of you out there who wonder if this and other side stories will ever have a resolution.

19. Back to the timeframe that the plane went down and then it was “found.” Frank was supposed to be the pilot on Flight 815 but for whatever reason (drinking, it sounds like) he didn’t fly that day and since then has lost his job. But, he had enough time to open a vacation shop? Could he have reasonably done that in just 90 days? Too much time couldn’t have passed or the pilot’s body would not be as intact either.
frank_business1.jpg Click to enlarge

20. OK, so why is Locke so po’d that Ben shot Charlotte? Locke threw a knife in Naomi’s back and he’s mad at Ben?

21. I’m assuming here that Naomi is meeting up with Creepy Eyed Man in the former Oceanic offices (big empty room).
room1.jpg Click to enlarge

22. After watching this scene again it makes me wonder where Naomi thinks she’s going because she asks several times about possible survivors of Flight 815. But, what does Oceanic have to do with Ben since that is their primary goal. What background must Naomi have as it seems she must be quite the bad ass going in as the 4 boat people’s protector. And what is the specific purpose of each of the four? And…. what is Naomi doing with Desmond’s picture? And not just Desmond, Desmond with Penny!

23. And what does Naomi mean by “A mission like this?”

24. Number on helicopter: N842M. I think that Sayid can fly this thing. Could explain how there are only going to be six getting off the island (there is a panic and Sayid flies them out of there). AND also explains what *them* Creepy Eyed Man asks Hurley about (four boaties plus Naomi).
helicopter3.jpg Click to enlarge

25. When Miles calls back to the boat why does Regina tell him that Mankowski can’t come to the phone right now? Has Patchy found the boat? What has happened to them? Is Regina the mole for Ben and she has done something to Mankowski? Drama on the boat!

26. I think that Jack is going to bargain a trade to make sure Juliet gets rescued. There is no way he would agree to leave her behind. I think he’s going to give up where Ben is in order to get Juliet rescued.

27.  Whoa!  Ben - old school!  So we know some things just from this picture.  Ben has been off of the island since he was a young boy.  But, it appears it either has been a *very* long time (check out the hair and clothes) or he has been hiding since the 70’s.  I think perhaps he infiltrated the DeGroots (remember the video and how they were students in Michigan looking to create a better society) and back on land they know what Ben did with the Others to the Dharma group. He must have found a way to create a “cloak” around the island using the magnetics to prevent others from finding him.

Gitsie, I was wondering if you had any insight on why creepy eyes would have picked an archeoligist, a person who can communicate with the dead, and a physicist to go on a mission to find Ben? I understand why they would need a pilot, but these other 3, I’m just not sure.

I did have kind of an “out there” thought. I haven’t been able to figure out how this would tie together yet, but it just keeps nagging at me. What if the 4 people in the helicoptor were part of the original Dharma project? Or, maybe it was just creepy eyes. Somehow though, I think they are connected with Dharma That might explain the gas masks that they brought on the plane. If they knew what Ben had done to the Dharma participants, they might expect that he would try that on them. Again, I’m not real sure how this would tie in, but I also think it might help explain why none of them are surprised to find survivors from the crash. If they know about the islands powers, then they would have reason to expect that their could be survivors. It could also explain how Ben has connections with someone on their boat. If this group had Dharma ties from the past then Ben may have been able to turn one of them.

That may all make no sense at all, that’s why I haven’t posted before on this site. It just keeps nagging at me though.

Oh yeah, as for the connection between creepy eyes and Dharma, I thought that maybe he had a daughter in Dharma. Specifically, the lady who was shot by Mikhail. I just watched that episode again today and they sure seem to have the same look and the same demeanor.

  2. dabe==ne Says:

i have to tell you this if you don’t know already….the picture frames are different when he comes back downstairs.

    read this: http://ratednfornasty.wordpress.com/2008/02/09/ultimate-lost-theory-evidence-screencaps/

  3. dane Says:

ugh my name is dane btw not dabe==ne, that was a mistake. big fan.

  4. Hugo Hurley Says:

gg - i agree with crazy ray. maybe i am viewing this way too simplisticly (is that a word?) but i get the feeling that crazy eyes is associated with DHARMA and they are sending the 5 helicopter people to find ben, the guy resposible for killing the entire DHARMA project on the island. crazy eyes and current day DHARMA could not find the island because of all the reasons that we already know (magnetic stuff, jamming signals, etc etc etc) but with the recent news of flight 815 and where it is, they have come up with this helicopter plan and team ?????????

or something like that - i havent pieced it all together either but thats the general feel i am getting …

oh also - the gas masks are because they know about how ben did it last time and if he tries it again they will be ready ?!?!?

finally - i think daniel is crying because he immediately knows upon seeing the news that he is going on this mission and he isnt too excited about it. he wasnt too excited about jumping out of the helicopter either. and he wasnt too composed when pressed by jack and sayid - he obviously isnt the courageous muscle or street smarts of the mission.

  5. Anne Says:

I can’t seem to tie this together in my head, but what if Daniel is upset because he knows that since they found the plane, whatever happened on the island changed the course of events so much that he is actually on the plane-dead. That is why the picture that showed the dead pilot did not have a wedding band, because it was the drunk pilot (can’t remember his name). I can’t explain this well, but comments like the one made to Desmond when he tried to purchase the diamond ring or when Locke said to Jack, “You weren’t supposed to do this,” make me believe that somehow all the choices being made now are impacting the past. Maybe when Desmond did not press the numbers and then was able to see the future, and change the time Charlie died; he actually started the beginning of the end of the world. So, pressing the numbers actually was saving the world. Of course, all of this could be explained a different way.

  6. Foffman Says:

Dane, that link was really interesting. Thanks for posting it.

  7. Gitsie Girl Says:

Crazyray: I think that Miles has some purpose with Jacob and/or the disembodied spirits that whisper in the jungle. Maybe the archaeologist has something to do with digging up the original Dharma inhabitants? I agree, the 4 chosen may have some connection to the original members. As far as Miles, it’s probably to help them get back off the island considering the magnetics or electricity that seems to keep boats and helicopters on the island (remember Juliet talked about how boats can’t leave the island?). But what nags me is why Naomi had the pix of Desmond and Penny if they are there for Ben. I’m thinking Hanso and Widmore have something to do with all of this.

  8. Gitsie Girl Says:

Dane: LOVE IT!!!! Did not catch that at all. What an interesting twist (if not explained by a prop error - please, please no!). I went back and ran my own screencap and indeed, the wooden frame is there going up and the metal frame going down. Not sure what it means yet….

  9. Gitsie Girl Says:

Hugo, wouldn’t it be a great twist if Creepy Eyed Man ended up being a good guy? I doubt it, but it would be interesting for sure. Michael Emerson (Ben) said in an interview once that once we saw who was coming we would think that Ben was a pussy cat compared to whatever/whomever is coming.

  10. Gitsie Girl Says:

Anne: Interesting. Good twist on the pilot. I wonder if the smoke monster was po’d when it came for Frank and found Gunderman (sorry, I can’t remember his real name outside of his Heroes character). That is why it chose to rip him apart.

I think it goes back to what I was saying from the season opener - course correcting is happening. I think they should all eventually die on the plane home as it was meant to be.

  11. dane Says:

thanks, i thought it was a pretty important thing.

also i’m 99% sure that the new guys are from Hanso/Paik/Widmore/Dharma because of what Ben did to the dharma initiative. I’m thinking Penny’s dad finances everything (including the dharma initiative and the hanso foundation), and he was prbly bangin’ Naomi and let her borrow his copy of Catch-22 or something, that’s prbly why she had the pic of penny and desmond…also if you look up the Paik company on Lostpedia you’ll see that they made a deal with the Hanso foundation to build a freighter…

  12. Rach K Says:

Just wondering…if you look at the plane wreck does the pilot look like Frank? I was wondering if ‘they’ (dharma, abaddon?) had done a ‘cover up’ of the crash and planted people who looked like the people who should have been on board. If you’ve got screen shots, can you lead me there for a better look please?! Also, I think we’ve seen that photo of Ben before. I cant remember where, or I may be thinking of a flashback to a younger ben, and he was wearing the same clothes, in the same environment. Hope you can help with this too!

  13. Gitsie Girl Says:

I don’t have screenshots but I can get them for you. I don’t remember the picture of Ben before. Anyone out there remember it?

  14. Rach K Says:

I found a screenshot, but not a very good one. http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1368-490.html He doesn’t seem to have a tache. On the photo on the news report he definately has a moustache, maybe he shaved, I don’t know, but I think it’s all a set up.

  15. The Other Scott Says:

In #27, the picture of Ben shows a computer monitor in the background. There is no wires going into the back of it. Why? Are they implying the place he was had some kind of technology we haven’t seen yet? Hmm….

  16. msb Says:

    GG-

First - I look forward to consulting your thoughts on this site after every episode. Keep up the great imagination!

Second - After Eggtown, I’ve developed another theory that I thought I’d share with you: What if, in order to make the trek from the Island to the regular world, one needs to be in the presence of someone that was born on the island to act as a catalyst? For the Oc.6, that catalyst would be Aaron. For Juliet’s trip to the Island, it would be Richard. For Flight 815, the catalyst would Locke (I’ve believed that Locke was born on the Island for a while now. In his flashbacks from Season 1, his “mother” insinuated that he was of virgin birth. Where he’s from has always been a mystery. This would also explain why the Natives believe that Locke is “the one”. They must know that someone on that plane must have been born on the Island). For the “boaties” that came over on the helicopter, I think the catalyst was Daniel (this would explain Daniel’s “poor” memory & not knowing why he was crying when watching the discovery of flight 815).

If my theory is correct, I think that they will extract this information from Ben at the end of this season, and either (1) Claire lets Kate take Aaron with her to get off the island or (2) Kate steals Claire, or (3) we lose Claire this season. #3 could explain why Jack does not want to see Aaron, but I hope that’s not the case.

Pls. let me know if you think there are any holes in my theory

    -msb
