4 X 12: There’s No Place Like Home (Pt1)

What a pickle. On one hand, I want the second part of the finale NOW! On the other, I don’t want the season to end so that we face another looooong hiatus.

1. You would think that “Miss Decker” would be sitting with the Losties talking to them, soothing them, asking questions. But she’s sitting in front with the pilots. I’d be sitting with them.

2. When Miss Decker first comes to the back of the plane she looks of the screen right and smiles at someone in acknowledgment. Then she comes forward to the Losties. Who is she acknowledging? It’s not the Losites.

3. It looks like Creepy Eyed Man. My copy isn’t very high res but it looks like him and he’s sitting in a very creepy Jacob-in-the-cabin way. On the other hand, if it was him then wouldn’t Hurley have recognized him when he visited him in the asylum?

4. A couple of things on when the back of the plane opens. I thought that this was the *eye opening* of this episode. Same symbolism. The other thing that popped into my head was that it, for some reason, put me in mind of Close Encounters of The Third Kind. Like aliens coming out of the mothership. I bet you would feel like an alien coming back home after what they have been through.

5. “… I promised those people that I would get them off of this island.” He’ll never rest back home until he makes that happen.

6. Here are some shots of Dan’s book with a sketch of the Orchid. I think he knows that they have to get off the island because when it moves his coordinates will no longer work and they will be stuck there. I’m curious though how Dan knew about the secondary protocol. Up until this point he didn’t seem to be in the know this much. I bet they get stuck there and will be part of the next two seasons. Maybe he’ll finally take the tie off (SKID).

7. I’m sure there are some anagrams in the names of the locations.

8. Wow, that story that Oceanic is telling is a whopper. But, wouldn’t the “real” story be even more unbelievable? A typhoon kicks up the supplies from a fishing boat complete with basic supplies and a raft. Incredible. Apparently it must have had a change of clothes, too, if we are to believe this story since none of them of wearing what they had on while on the plane. And how in the world does Kate explain getting out of the handcuffs in time to jump off of the plane with the others?

9. I think that Sayid and the other survivors have to lie about the others being alive. I think that they are under the impression that they are protecting them, that if the world at large knew about the island and the other survivors then the “bad guys” who tried to kill them in the first place would be out searching for the island and thus putting their friends in danger.

10. According to Ben, moving the island is both dangerous and unpredictable. I’m thinking the last time they did this it was the “incident” that has been discussed before.

11. Love, love, LOVE the banter between Ben and Hurley. Watch it again if you can. It’s awesome. How intimidating it would be to be Jorge Garcia there between two Emmy winning actors but he held his own!

12. I wonder if any of the supplies in the box will be of use later? I wonder what the original use was? Why crackers? To ease an upset stomach (as Kate would say). And what is the significance of 15 years? So many mysteries to this box. I wonder if Ben’s last use was right after he killed off the Dharma Initiative.

13. Look in the background. It’s the frame of the church that Eko and Charlie were building. Seems so long ago. Think of everything that has happened since then. Think of everything yet to come.

14. The big takeover of Sun’s father’s company was done through five different banks. Could each of the survivors (minus Aaron) have been in on it? Will we see his connection to the Oceanic crash that perhaps Sun knows about?
sun1.jpg Click to enlarge

15. When Hurley is walking in his house it was a pretty dirty trick they did to us by letting us hear whispers. Of course, you are thinking it’s an island thing when it’s actually his family and friends.

16. I like that they brought the numbers back. It was like the writers way of saying, “Hey, we haven’t forgotten about you.” That they are telling us that they know we want more answers for questions that have been around awhile.
odometer1.jpg Click to enlarge

17. At some point Hurley must decide that the car is OK. Remember that he is driving it in the opening scene of the season.

18. “Hello Michael. What ‘cha been up to?”
jinsun1.jpg Click to enlarge

19. Is it just me or when Jack and Sawyer come up on Frank as he’s working on the helicopter, does all the banging and cursing remind you of the scene from “A Christmas Story” when the dad is working on the furnace? I’m just saying…

20. Frank and Sawyer. A match up I would love to see more of. Frank could give it right back to Sawyer I’m sure. I wonder what kinds of nicknames Frank would dream up for Sawyer. Sayer came up with one for Frank right away, “Shaggy.”
franksawyer1.jpg Click to enlarge

21. So Claire’s mom came out of the coma? She even says that she was in the hospital when he came to find Claire. She looks pretty darned good for being in a coma for years and just recently waking up. Can we assume that there was something else that woke her up? Maybe some of the same healing *magic* that was used on Juliet’s sister? If they want Jack to go back to the island, finding out Claire is his sister is probably a good way to do it. I don’t think that anyone is fooled into thinking that Aaron is really Kate’s baby.

22. I’m sensing an Emmy for Matthew Fox this year and this scene ought to do it for him.
jackshocked1.jpg Click to enlarge

23. Is it too farfetched to think that there are “two” Richard’s on the island? What else would explain why he and The Others are back in their island clothes rather than their regular clothes? Could there be twins? Every season it seems we are introduced to new sets of “Others” and we might get to see that there are other “Others” yet. Why would Ben want Richard to capture Kate and Sawyer? So many whys.

I’m gonna read this tomorrow when I’m not half asleep, but I wanted to apologize for not commenting on the last few recaps! I’m an admin over at DarkUFO’s new SpoilerTV forums, so I’ve been busy with that and real-life. But I still read your recaps after every ep. ;)

Anyway, I’ll be back tomorrow to reply to the recap.

  2. Proverbs Says:

There seems to be someone sitting there for sure, and she definitely acknowledges and smiles at him.

  3. Proverbs Says:

Oh yeah it was good to see the numbers damn how long has it been

  4. Gitsie Girl Says:

Proverbs; you can see him sitting there (check out the pictures…). I think it’s Creepy Eyed Man

  5. Proverbs Says:

I see his legs, do you mean Ben who’s the Creepy Eyed Man you speak of? I think it could be another representative of Oceanic or a mystery man, like i said there’s definitely someone there.

  6. GaryG Says:

I read over a year ago, now, that the final seasons of LOST were going to be only 14 or maybe it was 16 episodes long, could have been 18 too… sob… but that they were going to play the seasons back-to-back. I’m assuming they wanted to do this because of Walt… he can’t look 10 forever. I’m also assuming we’ll see him reapear in the flash forwards and as real-time catches up to the flash forwards as being 13 or 14. I think I read this on ABC’s website. Does anyone know if this changed because of the writer’s strike? I really feel sorry for many of the ordinary people, camera operators, boom guys and such, I heard many of them went into serious debt and even “lost” their homes because of that strike.

  7. Gitsie Girl Says:

Creepy Eyed Man is Abaddon. Remember he visits Hurley in the asylum and offers to move him, is pushing Locke in the wheelchair and also he’s the guy Ana Lucia meets to discuss going to the island.

  8. Smith Says:

I do think it’s too much to assume that there’s two Alperts. It seemed obvious to me that the Others had on their Island clothes for A)camouflage and B)intimidation. (Looking like normal people wouldn’t unnerve their quarry so easily) I have to admit, though, that Keamy’s mercs have them beat in both categories.
I’m not a good theory deviser, but here goes. My theory as to why they captured Sayid and Kate? Ben’s probably been to the future as we saw during his centric episode this season, he knows who’s getting off the island, so he needs them all in one place. I assume that he’s told his cronies to round up the stragglers. Baby Aaron had better stay away from Michael.
As for Abbadon being the person on the plane? It’s possible, but I’m convinced that he has some sort of ulterior motives than Widmore despite working for him. (It’s obvious that Widmore’s in charge of the Oceanic Six’s homecoming by now, right?) And besides, he seems like the kind of guy who would draw more “nervous glances” than “curt nods and smiles”. The legs probably just belong to some random security guard.
My money’s on Locke in the coffin. Everyone besides Hurley hates him for killing Naomi and his splitting up of the survivors, and Hurley’s in the loony-bin at the time. The only problem with my theory is Locke’s mother being alive and well. But still, he seems the most likely candidate. Kate would definitely see Sawyer, Sayid’s funeral would be public, Desmond hasn’t really done anything to deserve everyone ignoring him, Jack hasn’t met Jacob or Alpert, and Ben’s now everyone’s favorite character. I could see Heroes killing off the fan favorite unceremoniously, but not Lost.
If Ben had seen the Island be moved before, it would have to be before Juliet showed up. Unless it’s done in a way that no one on the Island notices. I think that he more likely got knowledge of the Orchid from his Dharma days.
I have to admit that this show’s really picked it up in the “Supporting Characters” category lately. Aside from Tom, Rose, Bernard, and possibly Mikhail, we haven’t had anyone over the first three seasons that did anything special. Now we have Frank, the most interesting Freightie, Keamy, the scariest character this show has seen, Abbadon, the most unreadable creep ever, and several characters that were vaguely compelling before returning to the forefront of our collective consciousnesses: Richard Alpert, Christian Shepherd, Charles Widmore, and Jacob.
Which is the inherent problem with our three “series regular” frieghties. They aren’t really “Main Characters”. Faraday just barely scrapes together that status with his Constant-ness, but Miles has done nothing but be a male Asian Patricia Arquette from Medium, and my mind goes blank whenever Charlotte shows up on screen. At least they have better back stories than Nikki/Paolo.

  9. Gitsie Girl Says:

    Smith: *applause* Very well said.

I don’t want it to be any of them frankly. Losing Charlie was rough. Don’t know that the old ticker can handle another heart breaker like that. Narrowing it down, Kate would probably not want to see Ben, Locke or Alpert. Ben is alive so it’s not him. Unless Locke pulls a Ben-like-trick out of his hat I don’t know how he’ll get off the island and unnoticed back on land. So my guess would be Alpert. We haven’t seen what he’s up to yet.

However, I’ve recently read an article that the producers were thrilled that Cane tanked because it left Nestor Carbonell (Richard) free to work more on Lost. *UGH* I don’t want it to be any of them!

  10. GaryG Says:

I wrote up a time-line of events from the information we’ve had on the show so far. It’d be cool to try and keep this up to date and add more to it.

1987/88 - Danielle is shipwrecked on the island (if Sayid’s calculations are correct) and Alex is taken, I’m assuming by the Hostiles since the Dharma Inititive is still active on the island.

1989 - The last time the island was moved according to Ben. Cause of the “Incident?”

1991 - Desert Storm. Kate’s father (not the one she killed…LOL), Calvin (the guy who pulled Desmond into the hatch) meet up with Sayid and get him to torture his Commanding Officer to get information on a missing pilot.

1991/92 - Somewhere in here Calvin joins the Dharma Inititive and gets assigned to the Swan station.

1992 - The hostiles take control of the Island during the purge according to what Horace told Locke.

2000/01 - Desmond begins his solo boat race around the world and gets shipwrecked on the island.

2004 - Flight 815 crashes on the island.

2006 - Jack is back in the real world. He attempts to jump off the bridge and later calls Kate. Information gained from following link:

If anyone else has something to add, please do.

  11. 1 of the losties Says:

hey just a really out there theory, could the “island” be something like the movie “the island” starring Scarlett Johanson?????? Just a thought, anything is possible. That would explain why hurley can see charlie, beside charlie being dead that is

Also about Richard being a twin could be right but how does that explain him never getting older? Just had a brain flash what about Richard (twin 1) being a constant for Richard (twin 2) in the past????

    What do you guys think???

  12. GaryG Says:

I’m thinking Richard is one of the “dead” on the island, like Charlie and Jack’s father. Remember Ben’s comment to Richard on Ben’s birthday when he asked Richard, “You do remember birthdays, don’t you?” I believe that was a hint. If Richard is dead, he wouldn’t age anymore. We know that the dead do appear off the island because Hurley saw Charlie at the institute and Michael saw Libby at the hospital. I thought of this before, but it’s starting to make more sense now that Jack’s father seems to be coming back as a main character again.

  13. Smith Says:

Gitsie Girl: I couldn’t agree with you more that any of them dying would be terrible. It’s a testament to Lost’s awesomeness that we’re all able to feel such a connection with these characters. Hell, it still makes me sad whenever I remind myself that it’s just a fictional show and that I’ll never really meet any of them.

I admit that my logic was flawed in rejecting Alpert as a likely candidate for the dead man. If the Others are indeed taking Kate and Sayid to the Orchid (and come on, who doesn’t think they are?), then it’s very likely that he and Jack will meet. I guess I was just in denial.

I would also put Sawyer up as a likely candidate as well, if not for his aforementioned connection with Kate. You might ask how I could possibly suggest that he could die. My reason is a purely narrative one. Sawyer has, unfortunately, pretty much expended his use on this show. The character’s entire motivation (The evil man who was responsible for his family’s death) was neatly wrapped up last season. We all love the humor and kickassery that he brings to the show. However, unless he has some major revelation up ahead (like Locke’s “Chosen One” status reveal, which breathed new life into the character) I can’t see him surviving for too long. Perhaps he won’t be Hoffs/Drawlar’s newest client, but to me it seems likely that he’ll kick the bucket in some manner soon.

As I mentioned above, Locke’s become an integral part of the show again with “Cabin Fever”. (personally, I thought that he was being set up to die through pretty much all of the 3rd season) This means that he may be spared from the coffin. However, the other characters’ responses to the death seem to fit so well with his character… This show is so confusing… Well, for now, I’ll have to stick with Locke, but none of the characters would surprise me. Even Sayid could be possible (he’s got no family, and two years may have pushed the Oceanic 6 out of the public consciousness). Damn these brilliant writers!

P.S. I hope you all enjoy the brand new Smith comments™ with indentation and spaces between paragraphs. I was reading some of my earlier ones, and man is it tiresome. It’s a testament to Gitsie Girl’s great theories that I have so much to write.

  14. Smith Says:

    Ah, never mind. No indentation.

  15. GaryG Says:

I was thinking about the time line I wrote up. Didn’t the movie indoctrination for the Swan station that Jack and Locke watched have a copy right date at the end of it? I believe that date was 1980 and in the film they mention the Incident which would mean the Incident happened long before the last time the island was moved which according to Horace was 1989.

  16. GaryG Says:

There’s been one episode that has always kind of upset me because it really never fit in with all the other shows. I’m talking about the show with Nikki and Paolo. I mean, why introduce new characters just to kill them off in the way they did. Now I’m wondering with the appearance of Jack’s father as well as Charlie and other characters who’ve died as well as my questions about Richard and his seeming immorality - just maybe that show was symbolic. Nikki and Paolo were buried alive. I wonder if the meaning of this was a hint that those who’ve been buried may not necessarily mean that they must remain dead. Jack never did find his father’s body in the casket. Mr Eko’s brother’s body disappeared from the plane. When Hurley said to Charlie at the Institute, “You’re dead, dude!” Charlie answered back something like, “Yes, I am. But I’m also here.” There’s also the way some of the Others have reacted to certain situations. Miss Clue didn’t seem too worried when she told Cyclops to kill her. Cyclops himself kept coming back when we thought he was surely dead. When he told Ben, “It’s a good thing the fence wasn’t set to a leathal level.” Maybe he didn’t want Ben to know the whole truth or he was covering in front of Locke. I’m sure Kate, Sayid and Locke would be able to tell a dead person from someone who was still alive. Well, just a thought.

  17. Gitsie Girl Says:

I don’t know Gary. I still think they killed them off because of my campaign against them (lol). For those of you who weren’t around, check out my “Barbie and Ken Must Die” series here at the site. Seriously, though, I read while they were on the show that the writers didn’t expect but were well aware of the extreme dislike of these two.

As far as the dead and being buried, remember how the Others sent their dead out to sea (the lady that Sun shot, I can’t remember her name). So something is there with bodies that aren’t buried.

Smith: I still don’t think (and don’t WANT) it to be Sawyer in that coffin. Agreed, after x-amount of years passed their popularity would wane, but I would think that the newspaper article’s heading would have still mentioned the “Oceanic Six.” And yes, spacing is nice for those of us with attention problems (thus, my numeration).
