#14 – Who does Richard answer to? It’s been postulated in other places, here’s one just for example:

Link references Richard being similar/same to Roman soldier who pierced Christ’s side with a spear and was then doomed to live forever. So, in Lost mythology perhaps Richard is the one who “killed” Jacob… and now is forced to serve all those that can then communicate with Jacob. When there is not a “Ben” or a “Locke” around, Richard just has to keep the Others together and either search out or wait for his next master.

We know Locke is there to take Ben’s place as leader of the Others. I think I said this before, that Jack may be there to take Jacob’s place.

Jacob is connected with smokey. I’m sure of it. I don’t know to what extent it is, but he is. The writers basically told us this in the episode where Jack has to turn off the smoke detector and then Christian is sitting right there.

Anne: I was thinking about what you wrote. What if Ben managed to throw off smokey’s influence. Maybe that’s why the Others were so eager to have him replaced because they knew he was no longer one of them. But for some reason, Ben is still bound by the “rules” and that’s why he must come back to be judged by smokey.

maybe smokey is richard in human form, if he goes into the temple, does that mean his soul has already been taken by smokey or that he is immune to smokey or that they are one in the same? just a thought. all of danielle’s crew were changed, so why not richard unless they are connected in a special way

I think of Richard as a guide/helper of sorts; someone who delivers the message or will help, but isn’t there to judge or answer to anyone. A sexy angel?

I don’t know if the smoke monster is good or evil, but a friend of mine came up with an interesting theory – what if the island (smokey) is bad and Ben is being judged for being good – I know it’s strange and Ben hasn’t exactly been earning Boy Scout badges, but it would be a twist.

We do know one thing about Richard. I did mention this before, that he doesn’t always follow the orders of the leader. He didn’t consult Widmore or Ellie about Ben. He also side stepped Ben when he gave that folder on Sawyer to Locke so Locke could convince Sawyer to kill his father.

I’ve been thinking about this too with all the Biblical references in this show. Remember back when Juliet got in trouble and they “marked” her with that symbol on her back? In the Bible, when Cain kills Abel, God “marks” him and condemns him to wander the earth forever. I think there were a couple others in the Bible who were also condemned to walk the earth forever, but I can’t really remember. So I’m wondering, maybe Richard has such a mark and he is one of those who has been condemed by God to live forever. Maybe he has to right his wrongs? Just another theory.

I wondered about Claire’s monther’s miraculous recovery as well. It happened just in time for her to attend Christian’s funeral and tell Jack about his sister.

About smokey. Whenever we see him, the sounds he makes sound like a combination of electric, mechanical and animal. Way back when we first hear smokey in season 1, Rose says it sounds familar and someone answers, where are you from. I’ve always tried to identify what those sounds remind me of that would make them familiar. But what if those sounds are familar to Rose not because she heard them in the real world, but because she heard them “on the island?” Maybe as a child? It would have had to be an earlier time than 1977, because at that point in time, Rose would have been a younger adult. Or Rose could have had dreams about the island like Locke did. Remember when Richard visits Locke as a child and there’s that drawing on the wall of smokey ripping someone’s head off? Widmore mentions dreams to Ben when Ben sneaks into his bedroom and asks him about the scotch and why it’s there – Widmore answeres, he has had it there since the nightmares began. He says it in a way as if he knows Ben would understand why. Is Ben having nightmares too?

To Cassidy and Sawyer. Don’t forget that Sawyer was given a choice. He could take Cassidy’s money and leave her, or they could both get a bullet in the head. Sawyer never was the type to explain his actions. His past has always made him a loner. I think he was freed from that when he killed Locke’s father, the burden he’s been carrying around since he was a child. I think that changed Sawyer the same as Jack was changed when he learned of Locke’s death. I think Kate was changed by taking on Aaron and so establishing roots.

Dane, are you *sure* Richard answers to Jacob? Do we have anything so far to support that? Ben goes to Jacob for answers but we haven’t seen Richard indicate yet that he follows anyone. That is the beauty of this show, you don’t know what’s around the next corner.

Locke also looked into the eyes of the island (aka Smokey) and he says what he saw was beautiful. Smokey judges them. I have thought for awhile that Smokey has some type of electricity or energy that stimulates their brain and memories. Smokey will judge Ben next week, too.

But you are right, something down there changed Robert.
