5 X 15: Follow The Leader

I think Dan was wrong.  Not that they cannot change the future because truth be told, any of us can change our future.  We can chose to turn right instead of left and save our own life unknowingly.  But, not all of us are transported to the past and therefore that decision has ramifications on the course of our lives on a whole.  Dan was wrong that the Losties weren’t supposed to come back to the island.  Yes they were.  In fact, they had to come back in order to save Ben and set off the bomb, creating the *incident* which lead to the quarantine of the hatch, the button pushing and so forth.  If the Losties had not have returned none of that could have happened and there is where their fate could have been changed.  Yes, my head is going in circles too.

1.  Looks like the old Locke is completely gone.  The boars of the island aren’t safe with him around.  This scene reminded me of the good old days on the beach were Locke went around killing stuff for them to eat.

2.  I’m glad that Locke’s compass can still find North, according to Richard, because they *always* go North.

3.  I believe Locke.  If he gives Sun his word that he will help get Jin and the others back I think that he will.  And, did you notice that he called the Losties “our people?”  Maybe he thinks he leads them all now.

4. Jack and his insatiable need to fix things.  Why does he have to fix it?  Why does he have to try and change the course of the future/past?  Doesn’t look like our Jack has changed one little bit.  And, he convinces Ellie to go along with it (in her hopes of changing the fact that she shot her own son).

5.   Was it just me, or the scene where the guy brings in the manifest and starts telling Radzinsky about who was on the sub remind you of when Hurley brings the manifest to Jack and points out that Ethan wasn’t on it?  Ethan probably had to split because he knew there was no way he could explain what was really going on.

6. Tell the truth, how many of you out there could name the president in 1977 when Pierre asked Hurley?  I was just a little girl then so I didn’t know off hand.  But this was one terrific scene with Hurley and Pierre and had me laughing out loud.

7.  So we answered the question of how Richard knew when to come and help Locke but now we don’t know how Locke new when to send Richard there.

8.  Radzinsky trades Sawyer a map to the Hostiles for a ride on the sub.  First off, Sawyer doesn’t know where they are as he hasn’t seen their camp.  Second, I can’t wait for next week to see exactly where he did draw the map to.  Knowing Sawyer, it’s going to be good in a funny way (funny to the audience I mean).  Plus, Sawyer promised to kill Phil so he has some revenge to take when they get back off of that sub (which we know they do from watching the previews).

9.  Kate says that she can’t go with Jack in the water and into the tunnels this time.  Why?  Kate is always up for adventure and always wants to come along so why not this time?  Was she thinking of Sawyer or can she not go around the hydrogen bomb?  This is very much not like the Kate who used to steal guns and sneak around if necessary to be a part of the action.

10. Tell me when Kate became the moral majority?  She thinks that blowing up hydrogen bombs and killing children is so wrong but this is the same woman who robs banks and blows up step dads.  Typical, people think that if they do something for the greater good it’s ok but when someone else does it suddenly it becomes a moral issue.

11.  When the Freighter people showed up on the island remember that they thought that Dan and Charlotte went to the hatch to detonate a bomb?  They said that the bomb would kill everyone on the island?  Sound like a bomb that we know about (Jughead)?  Dan turns out to be stopping the bomb from going off but if he didn’t show up would the bomb have exploded?  It seems too coincidental these two events then and now but not sure yet how they play into the story unfolding.

12. Red flowers!  These have been around forever in this show.

13.  Any guesses how the get the bomb moved?  Richard says by the same way they brought it in.  Hm….  I don’t think teleportation is an option.  Maybe the same way the pyramids were built.  The little cart it’s on seems kind of rickety.  Plus, it’s been sitting there for 20 years rotting.

14.   “We’re not alone here and we all know it!”  Oh wait, wrong season.
lockespeech.jpg  Click to enlarge

15.  Oh boy.  Locke wanted to kill the Hatch because he didn’t believe that pushing the button saved the world.  Well, we know how that turned out for him and he admitted he was wrong.  Now Locke thinks that upsetting the apple cart again by *exposing* Jacob is a good idea, that killing him will somehow set him free.  Hopefully past events/decisions of Locke isn’t an indicator of future events.

16. I watched it again and Ben totally says that he “tried” to kill Locke.  Tried?  Ben has a plan here and I think that Locke is 100% mortal and never died.  Maybe he had the crazy paralyzing spiders in that box he was hiding from Jack.  Being a doctor, maybe Ben thought Jack would recognize the spiders and then know he was using them to paralyze Locke.  Crazy theory you say?  I guess we will see!

17.  No more knock out drugs on the sub?

18.  So here it is, cheesy CGI from the greatest show on TV.  Looks way more cheesy when it’s running that it does in these screen caps.  One can only hope that there’s not some tech sitting at a desk somewhere uber proud of this work.  I hope this was noticed and let go because of sheer campy-ness.

Here’s a thought I recently had – Richard is actually Jacob. It would put him in a position to lead the Others, but they wouldn’t know he was actually their leader. That way he’d be able to observe them without them acting differently towards him as they would if they knew he were actually Jacob. It would also give a good reason why Richard is so against Locke bringing everyone to see Jacob. It’s a classic theme throughout literature and history where a king would dress up as a commoner to see into his subject’s everyday lives. If Ben has never actually met Jacob as Locke has sugested, then Richard would have known all along (if he is Jacob) that Ben is a fraud. Richard was forced to go along with it to keep his secret and maybe, that’s the help he was asking for that first time in the cabin – for Locke to replace Ben.

I just wanted to say that you have some of the best thoughts on Lost and I look forward to reading them every week.

The CGI is as bad a Stargate during the early seasons. I hope it improves for next season or the final episode if we are going to have more seens using it.

  3. ssgt.z Says:

as for the theroy of Richard as Jacob, i can see it happening, but i think it would be kinda a cop out. as for the sub CGI, that was pure crap. they shuld have just ripped off some file footage. between that and ben-n-da-smoke the special effects people ought to be fired.

  4. Dharma Adept Says:

nice review, gitsie. that CGI was pretty obvious. i somehow doubt that Richard is Jacob. i think Jacob is someone we haven’t seen yet. ‘crazy paralyzing spiders?’ too messy. besides, we would have seen one of them crawl out of the coffin. but i think the episode makes sense if we accept your premise that dan was wrong for those reasons. the future can always be changed because it hasnt happened yet. it’s the past which cannot be changed, if you think about it. if someone goes to the future, that doesnt change the past. if someone goes to the past that doesnt change the past–only that which hasnt happened yet is affected–it only changes the present, which becomes the past, which alters the possible course of the future. so WHH is correct. i think there are things which always happend, but that doesnt mean they couldnt have not happened had circumstances been different. a corollary to WHH is What Hasnt Happened, Hasnt Happened (Yet), or WHHHH(Y).

One thing though that we have to think about. Christian was dead before 815 crashed on the island and he’s running around alive once again. So why not Locke as well? Locke appears to have come back with many of his questions answered. He knows more than he did before he left the island. When Ben talks about trying to kill Locke, don’t forget about him shooting Locke and leaving him for dead in the pit with all the DI bodies. Richard probably knows about that, but may not about Ben strangling Locke back in the real world and Ben may be referring to that time. Like I mentioned before, Ben may not be the same Ben that Richard knows from before. Ben came back to be judged by the island. He had his run in with smokey and his dead daughter and was allowed to live after being told to follow Locke. Ben is on borrowed time now and he knows it. Even before, he could have allowed Ceasar to kill Locke, but instead, he protected Locke and shot Ceasar. If there is a Jacob and who Jacob is, I can only guess it’s going to come as a big surprise to all of us.

  6. GaryG Says:

I’m also thinking that Ben deciding not to shoot Penny when he saw little Charlie may have contributed to the island’s judgement of him.

  7. Hugo Hurley Says:

so widmore is dan’s father and eloise is dan’s mother, right?
    widmore is penny’s father too.
whats the age difference between dan and penny?
cant be more than a few years, right?

well, assuming eloise is pregnant in 1977 and widmore has been on the island for a little while, then where is penny ??? who is her mom ???

mark my words, desmond and penny will be HUGE factors from here on out …

  8. GaryG Says:

Hugo Hurley: You made me think about something. Who are Desmond’s parents? Widmore was so dead against Desmond being with Penny when they first met. That whole telling Desmond about that scotch, setting out the two glasses and then pouring only one for himself and telling Desmond he was unworthy to drink a glass of it, I mean, that was so personal. The one person Widmore seems to hate above everyone is Ben, but Ben is too young to be Desmond’s father. Then again with all the time travel stuff, who knows. Then also, Ben could have been a teen father and we still don’t know what happened with Annie.

  9. Phil Says:

Love tthe site. shame we have to waitt longer to watch it here in he uk. thanks for the internet i usually get to watch the show on thursdays.
just a few bits on my mind.
dan saved desmonds life from jumping with constants. which was penny.
daniel’s constant is desmond as it is listed in his journal. so. bare with me here. if elloise is penny’s mum and elloise dies, then penny is not born, might we see penny do the jumping thing like desmond did which is what dakes desmond back to the island to save penny, her mum and in some way desmond? that a little hard to follow, just hope you know how i mean…
also those who went back to 1977, are they really asleep and dreaming it? and just need their constants to bring them back before they die? be it by bomb?
CGI of sub was very poor. if we can make dinosaurs look life like when no-one has even met one, why cant they get water right?
i think jacob is the egyptian mummy of the statue, and the rules arer just documented in the writing symbols on the walls. locke says he’s gonna kill him but i think he took everyone in order to show them that he does’nt exists
if in each season they had something tot achieve s4 get off island s5 get back to island what can possibly follow for s6 for them to achieve?
if i could take this last line to thank GGirl for all your work? i dont know what you will find to do this time next year but i’m looking forward to it.
    love from the UK
    Phil.

  10. Gitsie Girl Says:

Maybe since Dan and Penny are related then she has something *special* about her as well? I like the idea of Des having to go back to the island in some type of effort to save Penny. Would be a very interesting twist.

Can’t wait for tonight. TWO HOURS! YEAH!

I feel for those of you outside the US that don’t get to watch it live. I wish there was a way I could post the epi for you… Are they even airing Season 5 yet?

  11. GaryG Says:

Hey GG, don’t forget, if Dan’s plan does manage to change things so that 815 never crashes on the island, that’ll mean they don’t met Desmond on the island and help him get off and back to Penny. From what they have been saying, they’ll be blowing up the Swan Station’s site when they found Desmond pushing the button – so will it be there or not when Desmond washes up on the island? But also, it’s obvious that Chang/Pierre or whatever other name he goes buy did send most of the women and children off the island since we know that’s what happened to Miles. So will things actually be changed, or is this and was this always the “incident?” Remember Sayid’s comment, “The last time I heard of so much cement poured onto something like this was Chernobyl.” That remark kind of set the stage for a nuke and radiation. Anyhow, just a few thoughts. I can’t wait till tonight. This entire season has been the best yet and I just know tonight’s show is going to blow the rest away. If Lost doesn’t receive an award this year, something is wrong!!!

  12. GaryG Says:

Opps, sorry, not when they found Desmond pushing the button, but where…lol.

  13. BadGirl74 Says:

She complains the house is too cold in August. ,
