People are healed on the island because they drink the water... the water from the fountain of youth leaks throughout the island and cures people. For example.. Rose's cancer, John's many problems. This also explains why John Locke and Christian Shepard were standing in the water when they came back to life. The Island only wants certain people to have this fountain of youth. And to get it you must serve the island. The smoke monster is a course corrector that prevents anyone from getting this water. I cannot explain how the fountain of youth is connected to time travel though. The fountain of youth lies in the shadow of the statue. The statue also guards the temple and the fountain of youth. However, if I were Jack, I'd stand firm on letting Ben die if they didn't get me into communication with her again. He beat Sawyer at Poker so we know he can bluff, but this isn't the time for bluffing or faint hearts. If Juliette wants Ben dead for real, then it isn't going to matter much and Jake doesn't have the power he thinks he has... which, did he consider this before making his move?
