Initial Thoughts: 316
I want to thank the writers of Lost. This season has been so good, dare I say on par with Season One? I hope they have as much fun writing this stuff as I have watching it.
1. So I watched some of the pop ups from last week’s episode. It’s safe to say Christian is not Jacob. The specifically said that Christian claims to be able to speak “on behalf” of Jacob. And they flat out cofirmed that Mrs Hawkin is Dan’s mom.
2. Love, love, love the opening that was just like the opening of Season One. Well, except for Jack holding the piece of Jack’s Locke’s note. Which the note was a total set up, by the way. I mean, it was so obvious this week that every way Jack turned he was being set up. But I wasn’t mad at him for being so naive, instead, I felt that Jack wants so bad to go back that he doesn’t care if it’s a set up. He’ll do what it takes to go back. Remember, he can’t leave anyone behind (must go back for them) and has a nasty habit of wanting to fix everything.
3. I think we are getting new numbers this time. Flight 316, 46 hours earlier, 78 passengers. Lots of new numbers.
4. I wonder if Hurley somehow got a hold of one of Charlie’s guitars and brought it with him? Ben did tell Jack to take anything of sentiment with him because he’d never return.
5. I also hope that Hurley packed TONS of batteries this time for his headphones.
6. So when they are back on the island, do the Losties become the new Others? Will they have to kill off the original Others (like Ben wiping out the DI to take over)? Where will Richard fit in all of this?
7. We see the picture in the Lamp Post of the island, government top secret photo. Guess we know why the government sent troops there.
8. Mrs. Hawking explains about a gentleman who solved the mysteries of the island. I’m sure it’s safe to assume that gentleman is Dan. But the whole Desmond meeting her on behalf of Dan was very anticlimactic. I don’t think she’s done with Desmond. I think she finds him once the O6 are gone and convinces them to go back. She does tell him that the island isn’t done with him either.
9. Wow, all the counters in the Lamp Post hatch! and I love that when Jack asks Hawking if Ben is telling the truth, she says, “probably not.” But Jack just keeps on believing him…
10. Why is Mrs Hawking so dressed up? It bothered me that she’s wearing heels. Must be a quirky family trait to wear odd clothing (like Dan and his tie).
11. Did you see the statue behind Mrs Hawking in her office? Looked like the statue that had the heroin in it.
12. We will find out for sure next week, but I really don’t think Locke kills himself. I think that he’s ready to but then at the last minute he figures out something or Ben tells him something and fights it. The doorman hears a struggle so something goes on.
13. Ok, it’s just sick and weird that Locke is supposed to be the proxy for Jack’s dad. And wouldn’t Jack be wondering why they couldn’t use another body, any body? Why does it have to be Locke? Why can’t Locke just go back? Why does he need to be wearing something from Jack’s dad? And hello, ironic that Jack visit’s his grandad and he just happens to have “nice shoes” from his father?
14. The mystery of the white tennis shoes is answered. Jack just stuck some old, dirty shoes on his dad. Remember we see the white tennis shoes on Christian when he’s in Jacob’s shack?
15. Interesting story about Thomas and Jesus and the ressurection. Again, ironic timing, huh?
16. I’m thinking the “old friend” that Ben has made a promise to is Widmore. I HOPE I am wrong, but Ben goes to kill Penny. Ben knows Desmond is there and knows he’s with Penny. Ben thinks he has to take his revenge on Widmore for killing Alex, that was his promise. I could see what Ben has to haul ass to get on the plane and get out of there. Widmore will be out for BLOOD if Ben kills her. Desmond will be out for BLOOD if Ben kills her. And… it will explain how Des is talked into returning to the island. He will want to find Ben and kill him.
17. Rabbit in the magic trick reminded me of the rabbits we’ve seen back on the island.
18. I think Grandpa Ray is going to show up on the island.
19. What has Kate done with Aaron? She must think it’s terrible for her to be so upset. And, I thought ALL the O6 have to go back, which includes Aaron. And Desmond’s vision was Claire and Aaron getting on a helicopter out of there. Me thinks little Aaron will show up on the island and freak out Kate.
20. OK, who wants to buy meat in a shop that has been storing a dead body. Gross!
21. I like that Jack is turning into the Man Of Faith now.
22. WE were set up by ABC to watch Life On Mars to see the Lost Untangled. I’m TiVo’ing now so I can just watch the Lost stuff. Am interested to see what it’s about.
23. Kate is a (fill in the blank). Sleeping with Jack and Sawyer when she’s emotionally a wreck. And, she looked very island-esque at his place right before they take off. No more fancy dresses and makeup. I like this Kate better.
24. Kate is also acting very much like she’s hiding from something. Who did tell Hugo to show up? Who does he trust enough to go? And was it me, or did some of the scenes resemble the first itme they boarded flight 815? Hugo almost didn’t make that flight either.
25. Nice of Jill to give Jack five minutes to pull the van up. Enough time for Jack to do what he has to do.
26. Ben really is a bastard. He doesn’t care what happens to the other people on the flight? Will they show up on the island too? I’m thinking its’ a nice way to bring in new characters. Not like we need any though.
27. I KNEW it would be Frank flying that plane! He was supposed to be the pilot of 815. I’m excited he’s back. I love his character.
28. Back to The Langoliers…. here is another parallel to that book. They fly through a time rip and only some of the passengers travel (in that book, it’s those that are asleep). Reminds me how only our O6 (and Ben) seem to make it back to the island. And we do hear the noise (like the time travel noise) so it’s probably just them.
29. This looks like the pond from Season One where they find Kate’s suitcase with the guns.
30. So Jin. What the heck??? The Dharma van looks new and I doubt there’s paint laying around. And he’s wearing a Dharma suit. And if he’s traveling in time, why would he be driving the van around and why would the road still be open? If it’s the past…. then why would Jin recognize them? This is so good!
31. If that flight was full, why were there so many empty seats?
32. Did Hurley turn in Sayid so he’d be on the plane?
33. I’m excited to go back and watch this one again! Talk to you in a few days!

4. I was wondering the same thing about the guitar.
8. My first thought was Dan too.
13. I didn’t believe Eloise when she said that. I think it’s just a random excuse so Jack will bring Locke’s body back to the island. I’ve thought for a while that Locke will come back to life when his body returns to the island.
16. Penny better not get killed.
19/24. Where is Aaron? What has Kate done with him?
27. I totally forgot about Frank about 2 weeks ago. Man he looks different.
31. Hurley bought all of the seats so it would only be the O6 on the plane.

28. I feel certain we will see again at least the Indian fellow who offered Jack condolence and who Hurley told to buckle up his seat belt.

In many sites I have seen the details of Locke/Bentham obit saying it was a probable suicide and he was survived by a son. Yet Jack seemed surprised that it was a suicide. What gives?

Michelle,
I thought the same thing. I think that the islanders (sawyer, jin, etc) are in a time travel and that’s why Jin has the van. But it doesn’t explain how he got the van from the DI or how he got a gun or the jumpsuit. I hope they show that. And i hope that now that they are back they don’t stay in that time period. But then agin i guess it would a little to the story to keep it going for the rest of the season and what’s to come after.

penny is gone .. or at least in very bad shape .. GG hit it right on the head ..
plus, correct me if im wrong, but ben calls from a pay phone near water ..
“a loose end to tie up”
“a promise to an old friend”
that will be a sad episode when they show what happened ..

#16 – Noooooo!!!!
Makes perfect sense though, that IS how Des would go back to the island.
Def agree that the guy from the plane will be important. Except for him and the cop there’s no one in the same section as the Losties, right?
There ARE a lot of similarities to the first flight, but many roles have changed. The dead person is Locke instead of Jack’s dad, the arrested person is Sa’eed instead of Kate (the cop reminds me a lot of Ana Lucia btw), Hurley has the guitar instead of Charlie.
Jin will be furious when he finds out that Sun is back on the island!

“So Jin. What the heck??? The Dharma van looks new and I doubt there’s paint laying around. And he’s wearing a Dharma suit. You’re not making any sense here. Why would Jin recognize them? You think Jin repainted the Dharma van? What are you even talking about?
Think things through a little more before you type them, otherwise this was an okay recap.

Ben most probably went after Penny. A case of an eye for an eye with Widmore. Aaron is probably with Claire’s mom. Locke was told he had to die, which is why he killed himself. He fills the proxy need but gets brought back to life by the island (Jesus reference, anybody?). And Sawyer, Jin, Faraday, and crew were trapped in the same time they were in when Locke turned the wheel, which was before DHARMA built the Orchid, so they joined the DHARMA Initiative to survive. That’s why Faraday was there with Dr. Candle in the season opener. And the island brought the O5 to the same time period, which explains why Jin was in the jumpsuit and driving a new looking van.

Captain trip,
It makes perfect sense. Maybe you just didn’t read it right.
February 19th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
No, it doesn’t, Ashley B. I’ll show you why.
“he Dharma van looks new and I doubt there’s paint laying around”
What is the impliation here, theres a chance that the van is actually not new, but just repainted and fixed up??? Ridiculous! Not even worth saying!
“And if he’s traveling in time, why would he be driving the van around and why would the road still be open?”
Uh, because he’s in the past, he’s infiltrated Dharma (we already saw Faraday did that, he’s time traveling in the same way as Jin). The road is still open because he’s in the past, before they were closed. This whole sentence I’ve quoted indicates to me that there was little or no thought behind it when it was typed.
“If it’s the past…. then why would Jin recognize them?”
???? They travel to the past, but they still remember things from the present. Sawyer was in the past (presumably) when he met up with Jin again, he recognized him. Time travel hasn’t interfered with their memories (yet?). Jin is not a little kid, obvioulsy this isn’t before he met Jack, hurley, and Kate. This is after he met Jack and company, we know that because we know that Jin never time travelled before he came to the island, and he never met Jack and co. before he came to the island. If this were a TEENAGE Jin or something, I MIGhT understand the idea that Jin shouldn’t recognize them. Otherwise, I haven’t a CLUE what Gitsie Girl meant by this statement.
I mean seriously, what reason can you give for Jin not being able to recognize them? It doesn’t make any sense.
February 19th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
I’d like to add that if I knew Gitsie Girl, I’d bet 100 dollars that Jin DOES recognize Jack, Kate, and hurley.
February 20th, 2009 at 12:04 am
OK I am totally pissed if Ben managed to kill Penny, that was one of my favorite story lines of the show- Desmond and Penny. But I agree it makes since in order to get Desmond back to the island
But why did Ben seem so unsettled when he was on the phone at the pier? He usually kills with no emotion
And what is up with the guy on the plane, I’m wondering if he is one of Ben’s “people”
I’m so glad Frank is back!
But I couldn’t help thinking about Walt…will he come back?
And what about Wigmore, Eloise and him were on the island at the same time, so how come she knows about the church and Wigmore dosen’t?
And by the way, I live in Carolina Tarheel country, so every week, a basketball game is on instead of Lost and abc plays Lost after 1am, and this week, they have not even showed it yet-it comes on tonight at 1am, I watched it online today, but I do want to say that I have some hardcore friends that don’t have a dvr so they set the alarm and watch it at 1am.
Gotta love the true fans! We’ve been with Lost since the beginning
And Gitsie girl, I think you do an awesome blog, I read every week, and you always manage to fill me in on the stuff I miss, and it keeps me thinking, so thanks!

Am I the only one that thinks the writing has been lacking its usual Lost flair? I would more closely compare these episodes to the first few of Season 3, but maybe that’s just me.
I’m still enjoying everything…it’s just all a bit flat. No one else feels this way? Ah well.
To start theorizing…
My friends and I thought perhaps Kate left Aaron with something she could trust… Sawyer’s old flame (mother of Clementine), perhaps? Or maybe she even turned him over to the authorities or dropped him off at a hospital, police station, orphanage…? The most appropriate thing she could have done, of course, was to take him to Claire’s mother. If the possibility existed that she’d never see him again, it would only be right. They almost played it like she’d killed him or something crazy, but I think she was just heartbroken.
The introduction of Ray feels like really weak writing to me. For four seasons we’ve only been introduced to Jack’s mother and father and suddenly there’s a granddad in the mix? Seems like a very convenient way for the writers to write themselves out of a problem. Perhaps this is a character they should have introduced or at least MENTIONED in an earlier season. If someone knows of a time that Jack makes reference to him in an earlier episode, I’ll eat my words. But…meh. It just felt contrived.
I too found it strange, the John being Christian’s proxy thing. Again, the conversation between Jack and Ms. Hawking seemed like the writers edging their way out of good storytelling. Having her call him out on thinking everything is ridiculous and then shrugging it off is so lazy and it’s…I hate to say it…it’s become a trend on the show this season. Almost like the writers want us to all “just go with it”. I can certainly understand the need to create exposition and move the pieces into position, but after telling us there would be no filler, it doesn’t seem like they’re really making good on that promise. But I digress. Getting back to the Locke business. Strange that they would have to go so far as to put something of Christian’s in the casket, but yet Aaron doesn’t have to be there?
Now, I know this is probably just something I got my hopes up for, but I thought for SURE that at least Aaron was going to have to go back. If it went further, I would have guessed Walt and Ji Yeon would have had to return as well. This is seemingly not an issue, though, so it’s probably something I was reading too much into when all the “EVERYONE has to go back. EVERYONE. Even the dead guy. I’m talking EVERYBODY…” stuff was flying at us.
All of this being said, I am SO intrigued to know how Hurley and Sayid ended up on the flight. It all felt a bit easy during the actual episode, but I’m guessing there will be a good payoff to everything.
Oh! Wouldn’t anyone have noticed that 5 of the Oceanic 6 were on the same flight?! No red flags popping up on the screens at Ajira airlines, I guess. Bad security, if you ask me.
Ok, so one more thing… Jin at the end. My best guess is that after Locke moved the wheel, time stopped flipping all over the place, landing our group in Dharma times. What with Juliet knowing so much about them already and Daniel being a scientist, it seems to me they could have easily assimilated into the Dharma Initiative. Or perhaps just some of them. Or maybe just Jin. I’m guessing we’ll have our answer soon enough. I agree, he MUST recognize them. I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t. None. At all. To add to the Dharma intrigue, I have to wonder if perhaps some of the things we’ve heard about through old Dharma footage and flashbacks could have been caused or directly involved our Losties? Could Sawyer have been down in the hatch pushing the button? Was Juliet assigned to the Pearl to observe? Probably not these things, of course, but it gets the gears working in my brain.
…and now I must sleep. :0)

10. Why is Mrs Hawking so dressed up? It bothered me that she’s wearing heels. Must be a quirky family trait to wear odd clothing (like Dan and his tie).
I always thought it was an English thing.
I’ve been wondering how/if Charlie and Daniel Faraday are connected. And what did Daniel do to that poor girl? And how do the two Theresa characters fit into this whole wormhole?
And is Teresa Cortez (the woman on flight 316. John 3:16? John Locke?
And when did they bring the easter eggs back? http://www.ajiraairways.com/home

Alex, I agree with you about Ray but he * was* mentioned (I know, it’s not much) back in Season One (maybe S2) when Christian was giving Jack his watch. I’ll need to go back and get you the exact verbiage and again, I know it’s not much. You make good points about the writing things into place. I guess I was so excited about the season I hadn’t thought about it but you are right.
I think Aaron will show up on the island, but I’m going to expand on that though in my next blog.
Good comments, thanks! GG

Well, I certainly don’t want to detract from your enjoyment of this season. I’m enjoying it, too! Some things the writers are doing just seems a bit …easy.
I’m definitely looking forward to your next blog! :0)

captain trips: Stop nitpicking. I understood what she was talking about, and the paint thing was a joke I’m pretty sure. But your username comes from a awesome book. So it’s all good.

Jacob – not an English thing! lol
I know it’s getting to a point when they wanna start tying things up, but I felt this episode was lacking, even for the amount of new info given.

#13 – locke with jack’s dad’s shoes…
maybe i’m just getting punchy this late/early in the night/morning. someone somewhere has probably already mentioned this, but i’m reminded of the old saying about either “to know someone” or “do not criticize someone” until you’ve “walked a mile in their shoes”.
locke is now traveling in “christian” shephard’s shoes. some symbolic insight to the path locke is on?
