Initial Thoughts: Cabin Fever

(typ-o’s to be corrected tomorrow… too tired tonight so please forgive)

1. Richard. Must be time traveling. Even if he was a clone, he could not pass on memories from one body to another. I think they have a way to travel with body as well as mind.

2. Ew, Emily dated the real Sawyer! Notice that Emily has a similar spirit as Locke – she doesn’t want her mom telling her what to do. Notice that Locke’s mom has a red sweater over her head when she gets hit by the car and while she’s going out to meet “him.” Coincidence?

3. Hurley asks the best questions. And it makes sense that he doesn’t want to camp in the middle of the jungle. Hello Smokey!

4. Notice that Keemy’s gun jams when he tries to shoot Michael? Remember that Michael couldn’t kill himself because the island wasn’t done with him yet. No way Keemy is going to be able to kill him…. yet.

5. Eye opening. Of course.

6. Horace is building the cabin, “A little get-away for me and the missus.” Then we go on to see Christian and Claire in the cabin. It was also so weird that the scene with Horace almost seems like it rewinds and starts over but with a different dialog and notice that he is cutting the same tree over and over.

7. Youngest preemie to ever live. Lives through infections, etc… The island has plans for John. Guessing he can’t die either until the island is done with him.

8. I love Hurley’s theory about how they can see the cabin because they are the craziest. I bet I could see it.

9. Interesting that young John drew the picture of the black smoke. Perhaps he can see the future?
10. Locke has had a very hard life. But I’m curious to know what makes him special. I don’t know that we have enough info yet to determine exactly what skills Locke has. Somehow he is receiving visions in his dreams as we’ve seen over all of the seasons.

11. When Richard comes to young Locke he picks the sand, compass and knife. The other items were a comic book (probably Walt’s), Book of Laws, baseball mitt (Jack’s?). I’m thinking symbols of things to come with those that are special and are drawn to the island. The only thing I could read on the comic book so far is “Hidden Land.”

12. Now Ben is denying that kiling off the Dharma folks wasn’t his idea. If I remember correctly it appeared to be Richard’s. But there was a huge gap of time that we didn’t see Ben so who knows who was calling the shots. I wonder if Horace is Jacob?

13. I was glad that the story finally went back to the boat and it was interesting that at one point we can hear Dan’s telegraph coming through.

14. Interesting that it was asked “What did this to him” (referring to Keemy’s soldier) rather than “Who did this…” or “What happened to him?”

15. Red folder containing the second protocol. I’m thinking that “the one place’ that Ben will go to hide from the freightee’s is the Temple. But why was that map kept so secretly?

16. Ben is the master of all manipulators. When he tries to convince Locke that Hurley staying was some mind trick that Locke was playing, it seemed to me that in actuality Ben has Locke and Hurley staying there with him and Ben is the one who manipulated them into thinking that it was their idea to stay.

17. Is it just me or does the science teacher who talks to teen Locke look like Mr DeGroot?

18. OK, Michael tells Frank that his boss is the one who put the boat at the bottom of the ocean and Frank laughs and implies that Michael is just a conspiracy theorist. Meaning??? That Ben staged it, not Widmore?

19. Yeah, Michael ought to know about having deaths on his conscience.

20. What’s the big deal with what appears to be a detonator on Keemy’s arm? They close the door when he’s putting it on and the captain doesn’t seem to know what it is either. I’m thinking that they’ve wired the island and he can blow it up when they get close enough.

21. I’m sure Desmond and Michael being back on the boat are going to be crucial to everyone being saved eventually. Desmond knows how to sail a boat so I’m thinking that he’s going to be able to navigate the ship.

22. Per Ben, “Destiny is a fickle bitch.” Aint it the truth man?

23. Creepy Eyed Man! Sending Locke to his destiny. Making it all seem like his own idea so he embraces the island.

24. A rewind, if Horace has only been dead 12 years and it’s 2004 on the island that means that he died in 1992? In that hair style? No way!

25. Now Locke owes Mr Creepy Eyes when they meet up again. OOOO, sounds like it’s going to be very cool to see them meet up again.

26. Keemy is not very smart. Why kill your doctor? Out of all the disposable people around, he kills the doctor.

27. Maybe Keemy just has an mp3 player with some really cool music on there. Hurley used to have music in season one, remember? Was pretty cool to have that music around, too. (this is a joke, btw)
28. So is Jack special? But has the island used him for what it needs? Ben says he got a tumor on his spine when the island was done for him so instead of Juliet poisoning him maybe it’s just the island letting him get sick.

29. Why did Horace build this cabin? I’m wondering what the original purpose really was? To somehow contain Jacob?

30. Is John going in the back entrance? The cabin does look different.

31. Am I tired or did it look like a skeleton sitting there until Christian actually stood up? Creepy lighting.

32. Claire is seriously drugged up. My sis thinks she’s dead but I don’t think so. Desmond saw her getting on a helicopter and I think that still happens in the future.

33. I loved the candy bar scene with Hurley and Ben. But, I was thinking that I would love to ask Jorge what it was like filming that scene with Michael Emmerson. I’m by no means an actress but I was actually jealous because Michael is such an amazing actress so what that scene would have been like.

34. I think that they are going to move the island by somehow using the magnetism that jammed the signal in the 1st place. Obviously we don’t know how that is done yet, but it’s a figurative move.

35.  Almost forgot to mention – did you catch the Jeronimo Jackson poster in Locke’s locker?

Was that little glass container of “sand” actually that ash substance that surrounds the chack??? and was THAT what Locke was supposed to choose?

. . . and how many of us thought that Baby Locke was going to find SOME way to blow something up in the Maternity Ward?

  2. Brian Palmer Says:

    HEY HEY Gee Gee :)

This episode reminded me of something I read awhile back concerning Richard and Ben’s relationship in regards to the Dali Lhama. I will have to look it up as to be sure I am not talking out of my butt, but I believe there is a someone charged with the task of finding the Dali Lhama’s reincarnation when he passes away by having the candidate identify something that meant something to him in his life. This person is also a kind of neutral authority. A subordonate and yet equal to the Dali Lhama.

    Any thoughts?

    As always… you rock.

I don’t think Richard is time traveling when he visit’s Locke. Remember in Season 3 when they show Ben as a kid coming to the island and he goes outside the fence and meets that long haired guy… that’s Richard. Then Ben grows up and they “purge” the island of the Dharma guys and there’s Richard again taking off a gas mask, now with his hair short. He hasn’t aged. Acording to Horace, that was 12 years ago, and Richard still looks the same age. So I’m guessing, Richard is either immortal, or he’s one of the “dead” on the island, like Jack’s father.

  4. Joe Says:

Haven’t we seen “creepy-eyed” man before? In the gymnasium with Jack and Hurley maybe? I don’t know, but it was somewhere. Sometimes I feel so “LOST” watching this show!

  5. Smith Says:

Best episode of season 4 so far, in my opinion. The two storylines were well-paced and unpredictable, and we got a shitload of insight into the Island. The thing I was most surprised by this episode was Keamy. From “The Constant” I always thought he would be just a pretty-boy side character, but the guy scared the crap out of me last night. If I had to choose between going up against the smoke monster and smiling post-Island Keamy, I’d have to choose the latter. Also surprised by what a little weakling Gault was.
Concerning some theories: Horace isn’t Jacob. The producers have said that he was someone we have not seen before. Also, I don’t think Richard has been time-traveling. Remember Ben’s little hint last season: “You do remember birthdays, don’t you?” The guy, for whatever reason, doesn’t age. I think it’s funny how, between Alpert and Abbadon (creepy-eyed guy) the one who seemed the most trustworthy, to me anyways, was Abbadon, even though he’s been shown to work for Widmore. Maybe the Freightie side is more morally complex than we thought.

  6. Smith Says:

I first thought that young John’s picture was of his “vision quest” or whatever from the “polar bears have got Eko!” episode, though Smokey does seem highly probable.
I thought Jacob was confined to his cabin. Is he Christian? Probably not, since we saw his eye in the season premiere while Christian was in the shot, but you never know.
I think it’s funny how of the four Main Freighties we have connected the most with Frank, yet Jeff Fahey isn’t even in the main cast. The only other one to come close has been Faraday. Miles has just followed people around and glared, and Charlotte is just a big splotch of poor characterization. Give one of the Frieghties in the main cast a flashback/forward soon, writers.

  7. R Says:

Good job G2 and friends… The ending threw me for a loop more than I can recall yet in the series. Took some time to digest. Did they ever actually shown us Christian’s dead body early in the show??? Either Christian is alive and well or Claire is dead already and joined him in at Club Cabin. I’m betting on the latter. Still can’t fathom “moving the island”… but in Dharlton we trust!

  8. Jenny Says:

I think when Locke said “move the island” he is not talking about moving it physically but rather moving it in time.

  9. GaryG Says:

I think the island itself is caught in a fold of space, something like a blackhole which is also why time seems to be different than that of the outside world – also like the event horizon of a blackhole where time is supposed to stop. Which is what makes the island so hard to find. Think of how they found the doctor dead on the beach before he was killed on the boat. So when they “move the island,” I believe they’re actually going shift the fold in space to a new location. I also think Ben may have used these unique properties of the island to leave it and come back without others knowing about it. Kind of like a gateway maybe to travel through space and time. Remember his secret closet that Sayid found, he had it hidden from the “Others” which suggests he also has a secret way off the island. It also has be be faster than any conventional travel since he’d be missed by the “Others” if he were gone for an extended period. Also, remember the million year old polar bear skeleton found in the desert with the Dharma collar on it – maybe this was an experiment/test in space and time travel conducted by the Dharma guys.

  10. GaryG Says:

Here’s something else I’ve been thinking about. I think to an extent, everyone on the island has some type of psychic abilities, some more noticable that others. We all know Walt can manipulate dice and appear in two places at the same time. Locke has some close connection with communicating with the island. Rose knew her husband wasn’t dead. Desmond can see/move through time. Here’s something to consider too, Jack healed his wife of a broken back, an impossible operation according to him, was he using some gift when he told his wife just before the operation, “I will fix you.” Aron began crying the exact moment Charlie died – did he know? Ben has a way of manipulating people, maybe he can read minds or he just has contol over people. I’ve probably missed stuff too.

Another thing I’ve been thinking about. The people on the boat are exhibiting the same symptoms that Danielle describes has happening to her people.

  11. GaryG Says:

About the items Richard gave Locke to choose from, one of them was “The Book of Law.” Locke gazed at it before he picked the knife. If you remember from Season 2, when Mr. Echo showed Locke the Bible with the spliced film inside, he told Locke the story of the finding of “The Book of Law.” So this was probably the 3rd item Locke was supposed to pick besides the compass and the sand.

  12. PHBZ Says:

First, I´m sorry of my english isn´t so good.

This last episode was really good, yet I don´t think it was so surprising. The emphasis was more into giving more depth to the story then in the “WTF” aspect.

But there was a point in this episode that really made my mind itchy, and now after doing some rechearch i´m thinking something REALLY WTF might be comming in our direction.

In the forest scene, when Locke says to Hurley that he can return to the beach, and then Ben tells Locke that he made Hurley think that staying was his idea.

Locke´s answer was something like “I´m no like you”, to which Ben replies in a really enigmatic way.

All this to reach to this point:

Both Ben and Locke have a mother named Emily, both were born premature, both were in contact with people from the island on their childhood and both ended up there because of those people and both had to kill their fathers.

I´m not saying that they are the same person (am I?) but something will come up from here. :/

Re: Brian Palmer’s comment, it is the Panchen Lama

  14. GaryG Says:

There’s been a lot of speculation about the island, that it involves aliens, or that they’re dead and in Heaven or Hell, especially with all the Biblical references throughout the show. But I was thinking maybe the island is the Garden of Eden that Adam and Eve were kicked out of and was hidden from Man. The island is definitely hidden, and they did make a reference to Adam and Eve when they found those bodies in the caves in season 1. The mysterious smoke does kind of resemble a serpent. Anyhow, it’s just a thought and I’d welcome any comments.

  15. Foffman Says:

Was Ben’s mom really named Emily?
Although I have a hard time believing Ben and Locke are the same person, I’d love to entertain the idea of them being step-brothers! Gitsie, do you have inventory of all the screenshots you’ve done? Because if so, may I request side-by-side screenshots of Ben’s mom and Locke’s mom? (If that’s not too much to ask, of course)
When they showed Locke as a boy (6 years old, maybe), the person who was taking care of him was certainly not his mom, because she was much older than young-20-something. This opens up the possibity that Locke’s mom, after she ran away from the hospital (and we never saw her again), ran away to, say, Portland, where she may have been walking in the woods with Ben’s dad, and we all know the rest of the story.
I hope that made sense, and I give credit to PHBZ for the idea.
Sure would be interesting, wouldn’t it?

  16. GaryG Says:

    Re: Foffman
Wow, I think you’re right. Locke was raised in foster homes. If you remember Emily’s Mother, Locke’s grandmother’s first question to the nurse was, “How do we give him up for addoption?” So who know’s what happened to Emily after that. Ben’s comment about getting Hurley to go with them in the woods to find the cabin suggest that Locke and Ben share the same ability to manipulate people. Although, God, Ben could certainly manipulate Locke. There’s no way they should allow Locke and Ben to be together alone. Look at all the doubt Ben has caused Locke in the past. He set him against Jack, played with his mind about the button, got him to blow up the sub… Well, good catch.

  17. Foffman Says:

    Ehhh…. I looked it up.
Holland Roden plays Emily, Locke’s mom. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0696387/
Carrie Preston plays Emily, Ben’s mom. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1555699/
They don’t look a whole lot alike. Maybe just a little bit, but if the writers want us to think it’s the same person, then no offense, but they did a poor job casting that role (then again, GG, you noted that they did a terrible job casting a new young Walt for a recent episode).

  18. PHBZ Says:

The island has twisted ways. :) I don´t know if they are the same person/soul, but with all this reecarnation thing circling, and plus, this Budalike test given to Locke, it seems that with little doubt (considering this is Lost we are talking about) reencarnation is on the table.

Can Ben and Locke share the same soul, one being consumed by darkness (Ben) and other still in the prossess of choosing what to become (Locke)? Can Ben be the serpent it self? (picking up GaryG´s idea os the island being Eden) Ben for shure seems to control people based on temptation.

One more thought, about the Budalike reencarnation test (if its really that).
The fact that Richard was apparently so disturbed by Locke´s result on the given test, by its choise of 3 objects, and the fact that apparently it was not a wrong answer, since “the island” still insisted for Locke´s presence, can this mean that Locke shares the soul of 3 persons connected to the island? I know this is a very long shot, and at the moment with the given clues there´s no way fot this to make sense. But if that was really a reencarnation test, then the choise of 3 objects must mean one of 2 things. 1st, locke gave a “wrong” answer, and in did he failed the test,

2nd or he gave the right one and he was, at some point of his existence, the 3 persons/souls.

All in all, Lost is for shure a mind blowing enigma, and we are all lucky to be here, on this earth, while it´s being broadcasted. ;D

(again, sorry if my english is too bad.)

  19. Smith Says:

@Foffman: Unfortunately, we’ve already seen Locke’s mother’s future, in his second flashback episode: “Deus Ex Machina”. She was much older than “Ben’s birth-era” Emily, who as we all know, is dead. Also, she kinda had reddish hair. So, unless it was an impostor a.k.a. dumb waste of plot, they were unrelated Emilys. I know, I was disappointed too (at the start of the episode I couldn’t stop repeating “Locke and Ben are half-brothers! Holy shit!”), but we’ve honestly had enough of the “people on the island are really related” shtick.
I can’t wait until we get to finally meet Jacob. There’s so many theories, from Abbadon to future-Aaron, that it’ll be an amazing moment to finally meet the man who’s had such an influence on this show. (and just because I haven’t shot down enough theories, here goes: Abbaddon is black, and Aaron has blue eyes, while the Jacob we’ve seen is a brown-haired Caucasian. You can never rule out shape-shifting, though.)

    Hello
Love the site and read every week, you always do your intial thought of each episodes then a couple days later a full recap of the entire episode this week you have not, why not?? I rely on your insights to help me undertand whats going on. Will it be on before episode 12 is shown, Please let me know…

  22. Vince Says:

I just watched this episode again before tonight’s new one. Someone earlier posted the comment about the DaliLama. There’s a scene in a movie called Kundun that is almost identical to the Locke scene that identifies his reincarnation. I don’t believe that Richard and Locke are being reincarnated, probably more towards time travel. But who knows if this is an allusion by the writers?

On another note, I’m pretty disappointed that the smoke monster drawing was so pointed out. In season 1 that would’ve been an easter egg! I guess they’ve lost faith in us!

  23. GaryG Says:

:( Intead of Lost, there’s going to be a basket ball game on tonight where I live :(

Why couldn’t it be on during Ugly Bety or Grey’s Anatomy?

  24. Gitsie Girl Says:

Wow such great comments. sorry to have missed out on them all until now! Will definitely want to touch on so many of these points. I guess we have the long, long hiatus until the show is back again in January to discuss it all. *sigh*
