Initial Thoughts: He’s Our You
Up until the end of this episode, I thought this one was a sweeper…. sweeping up all the little crumbs of Sayid’s past and how he came back to the island. But still another home run for the writers and producers.
1. The opening scene of Sayid and his brother reminded me of Eko and Yemi. And we also get to see yet another with daddy issues.
2. So Ben has been living there with DI and Sawyer and the others didn’t notice? How? Maybe they did know but then why wouldn’t they tell Jack, Kate and Hurley that he was there?
3. Ben hands Sayid a book about using plants to really *see* things… like Oldham used on Sayid so he could see his purpose on the island? And if this really was Sayid’s purpose will he die now? Click here to read about the book. It also reminded me of the wacky paste Locke used to use when he went on his magic carpet rides or sent Boone off into hallucinations.
4. Ben sending Sayid to kill various people who were supposedly out to hurt his friends reminds me of when Sawyer was sent to kill Duckett in Season One when he thought it was the real Sawyer. The guy who turned out to be just some guy who owed Hibbs money. Ben has sent Sayid after these guys for some reason but it’s doubtful it had anything to do with the Losties.
5. Ben shows up and says to Sayid that Locke was killed by the same people who are watching Hurley which is true since it was BEN that killed him.
6. Cute, Hurley working in the kitchen. I would think those jokes get old for Jorge Garcia. I would have like to have seen Hurley maybe working in the entertainment hall or something more cerebral than the kitchen.
7. If Oldham is DI’s torturer, wouldn’t he have had something more torturous then a sugar cube? And what are side effects of the medicine? Could Sayid have imagined the whole killing Ben episode?
8. Ben’s dad is a real jerk. He should have killed the dad and spared Ben.
9. I like getting back to flash backs and flash forwards. I have come to expect the jumping around rather than a linear story.
10. The lady who played Ilana has a very terrible accent. I don’t know if she was trying to hide a real accent to pretend to have an accent, but either way it really took me out of the story. The fake accent was too distracting.
11. When Sayid was high on the sugar cube and started laughing, I started to think this is the only time I’ve seen him happy and laughing the whole show. It was kind of nice to see a different side of him.
12. I wonder if the DI talks amongst themselves. If so, would Horrace tell Pierre Chang about what Sayid says about being from the future? Remember that Pierre believes in time travel (when they are excavating the donkey wheel)?
13. Ilana appears to be working for Ben, but if Widmore knows they have to go back to the island she could be working for him as well. We’ve never established who Elsa was working for when she tried to shoot him.
14. If Sayid killing little Ben was real….. then Sayid has just changed the past. Could be why next week is called “Whatever Happened, Happened,” that was Dan’s response when Sawyer asked him about helping Amy and changing the past. Or, Ben knew that Sayid was going to kill him and that is why he understood Locke’s sacrifice. Or, little Ben doesn’t die and either Jack or Juliet is going to have to help save him.
15. Even though we know why Sayid knocked out Jin, I would think Jin is going to see it as a betrayal. But I hope they find a way back together at some point.
16. And from the sounds of next week, Ben does live and the title makes me think that Daniel will reappear, which is good, I missed him! The big question will be… is he still wearing the tie? And, Clementine is in next week’s episode??? That is Sawyer’s daughter!

the island will save little ben. That will blow little ben’s mind and send him searching for all the answers of the island. It will lead him to the deeper appreciation he has and explain what prompts him to become the leader of the others much in the way john locke being special made him become their leader. that gun shoot takes him from being the sad little boy to being the devious mastermind.

Hey GG, from a comment Sayid made to Sawyer, they did know Ben was on the island. Sayid said something like, how could you live here knowing he is here as well and Sawyer said something like, what would you want me to do.
Okay, there’s no way the Ben could not recognize the Losties when 815 crashes on the island in the future. He would especially remember Sayid.
I think it’s funny that last week I mentioned that story I saw on TV where someone went back in time to kill Hitler as a baby to prevent his coming to power. I was really surprised to see Sayid try to prevent the the future by shooting Ben.
Um, I’d like to mention this too. Oldham, living out in that tent without electricity listening to that wind-up phonograph. Does that remind you of someone else who doesn’t like technology? Remember Ben told Locke not to bring the flashlight into Jacob’s cabin because he doesn’t like technology?
When they’re having that meeting to decide what to do with Sayid, Horace mentioned that they have “The Book of Laws” to guide them. In other words, “The Old Testiment” or “Torah.” If you remember, Mr. Ecko mentioned the “The Book of Laws” to Locke and it was also amoung the items Richard showed Locke when he was a small boy.
I think Dan’s comment about “What ever happened, happened,” he’s saying that they didn’t change the past because they were always meant to go back and do the things they did in the past. When they were living in 2004, the things that they did in 1974-77 had already happened, but the past was their future. But I still think Desmond is unique and does have the ability to change things. Like I mentioned before, he had that vision of Claire getting on the helicopter, but that didn’t happen. I think it was because Desmond went down into the Looking Glass and from what he said about his vision, he wasn’t supposed to go down. But because he did, he got that message of Penny’s from Charlie and told it to the other Losties and Claire went with Locke instead of staying with Jack. So he changed things.
Yes, Clementine is the name of Sawyer’s daughter. They mention Casidy too who’s Clementine’s mother, so I’m thinking we’re going to see what Kate did for Sawyer that she wouldn’t tell Jack. What if Kate gave Aaron to Cassidy?

The big question is, where is Sayid going to go now? He definitely can’t go back to the DI and the Others have mysterious Jacob who tells them who to admit into their organization. Danielle won’t be on the island until 1988 or so. Maybe he’ll hide out in the Black Rock. You know, if I were in the past and knew I was going to be coming back to that island, I’d try and leave a message for myself.

. . . so if Oldham could not get the job done, I am guessing he calls his brother Darrell or his other brother Darrell.

SKID… LOLOLOL! I was kind of thinking the same thing when I saw Oldham.

As I was watching the scene where the DI community leaders were having their meeting to decide the fate of Sayid, I couldn’t help but wonder where Pierre Chang was. We know he was in Dharmaville at least a few days prior to this, as he gave Jack his workman jumpsuit. I assumed he would have a more prominent role in any major decisions made about Dharmaville. I am curious of Dr. Chang’s actual role in all of this, he seems to know about the true potential of the island, as he was the one contacted when there were problems drilling at the Orchid. Why is Goodspeed in charge and not Chang?

I think that when Sayid shot Ben that was what was supposed to happen. I think that the island will ‘heal’ Ben liked it did Locke. And that Ben will not be on the road when they find Jin. In the preview next week, it looks like they are accusing Jack, Kate or Hurley of letting Sayid go. So I think Ben makes it back to Dharma-ville before anyone notices him gone. I also think that Sayid trying to kill him is what changes him from a sweet lonely kid to a killer. I think this makes him lose all hope of having anyone love or care for him. And then he is willing to do anything Richard tells him because he is the only one who seems to have an interest in him
If Ben is healed by the island after Sayid shoots him, this also makes me think that when he gets the tumor later on in 2004 (that Jack operates on), this is a sign that the island had no more use for him… just a thought
It would make sense then that Ben ‘uses’ Sayid to kill those people and also that Ben killed Sayid’s wife. He is torturing Sayid which is much more satisfying than if he just kills him, and if Ben is healed as a child, then he knows the island will heal him, so why be afraid?
Oh and I think that Oldham gave Sayid acid on the sugar cube, it was the 70’s after all :p
And that’s why they think he is just hallucinating and said “maybe you should only give half a dose next time” which cracked me up

Ben could not have had Sayid’s wife killed because he did not arrive back in the world from the island until after Sayid’s wife was dead
March 26th, 2009 at 11:22 am
oh thanks faultycash
and i’m prolly wrong about the island healing ben now that i have read the info on next weeks episode since it says that kate wants to save him but jack won’t help…

Could little Ben become just like the other dead folk on the island and basically become Jacob? Or at least, be able to “speak on his behalf.”

There’s one thing I just can’t buy. After Juliet delivered Amy’s baby, coming in there and spouting off all that medical jargon in front of the inexperienced intern they had working as their doctor, none of the DI people wondered how she knew so much about delivering a baby? She just goes back to being a mechanic as if nothing happened? I think there would have been questions, especially when their doctor didn’t know what to do and having him observe her in action. What she say, well there’s not that much difference between working on a van engine and a human. Mechanics are pretty much surgeons in their own rights. But I never saw a van get pregnant and have a baby bug VW.

Whenever Desmond or anybody else time traveled their bodies stayed behind so could that be what is happening to Sayid and them. Will Sun come across their “sleeping bodies in 2007?

RE point 10: Ilana’s accent. She was in Hidlago with Viggo Mortensen ane she spoke the same way. It drives me CRAZY, but maybe that is her actual accent!
March 26th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Crumbly: Don’t forget, when Desmond traveled back in time, his mind did and went back to his body that was in that past time. That’s not what’s happening to Jack, Sawyer and gang. If it were, they’d be going to their bodies living in the real world and they’d also be kids – though for Kate, who must have been born around 1981 or so, she’d have no body to go back to.

Hildago, that’s where I saw her before and that’s right, her accent sounded so fake to me then too. It probably wouldn’t have bothered me so much had I not just come back after living in the Middle East for a little over 3 years when I saw that movie. Sayid’s accent used to bother me some, but he’s gotten better at it. I think he tried too hard in the first season because he seems to have eased up a bit.

I am a little confused about Ilana. If she’s a bounty hunter and not a federal agent, then what is she doing transporting Sayid to Guam? I’m pretty certain their are laws concerning how bounty hunters operate. First a person has to be wanted by the law and I’m also pretty sure the bounty hunter has to immediately turn that person over to the law. Then the law takes care of any transporting. If she’s working under the law, meaning Sayid wasn’t being sought out by the law, then you’d think she would be sneaking Sayid to Guam in some private plane and not openly in hand cuffs. Then maybe she has fake paperwork and stuff. But that would risk Sayid making a stink and bringing the real law into it.

[...] Initial thoughts and comments are here. 1. Isn’t it horrifying cute that Young Ben brings Sayid a chicken sandwich immediately after we see a scene of Sayid killing a chicken with his bare hands as a boy? [...]

so what becomes of sayid in the past? does he become one of the others or a crazy person in the woods like danielle?
