Initial Thoughts: Some Like It Hoth

Hoth, check it out here.  Freaking amazing that they can work this stuff into the show.  I just hope that this doesn’t open the door to all of those theories that they are on some distant planet.

1.   Wow, did Mile’s mom in the opening look like an older Sun or what?

2.  The numbers are back in full force.  Opening scene, 316 on the microwave.  Room Mr Vonner is in, #4, Sawyer is on screen #4.  Sector 334.  Can’t wait to see the source of the serial number for The Hatch (the famous original numbers).
3.   Sawyer tells Miles that he “owes him one” for erasing the security video.  But, since Miles kind of messed up his job I wonder how that will play into the relationship with Sawyer and Miles.  Now he owes him one in another way.

4.   It looks to me like workers who have “accidents” at the Hatch construction site get taken to the Orchid to be experiments for the Donkey Wheel.  Why send live people when you can shoot dead bodies through it.  Sure, you don’t know what happens on the other side, but you can see what happens on the Island end of things.

5.   Alvarez didn’t get a bullet hole in his head digging the ditch.  Remember the magnetism in the hatch (think Sayid’s cross)?  I think that it pulled the filling out of his mouth and through his head.  Oopsies!  Horace is also talking to Pierre and says that he “doesn’t know if it was caused by the electromagnetism.”
6.  I’m digging the punk Miles with the spiked hair and the piercings.

7.  Miles has daddy issues.  No wonder he fits in with the Losties.  I’m not convinced that Pierre kicked Miles and his mother out when he was a baby.  I’m thinking that Pierre may have known that that the Hostiles would take them over or something bad was coming and actually saved them by making them leave the island.
8.   I’m also convinced that Pierre knows that adult Miles is his son.  We’ve been told that Pierre knows about time travel and remember the video from Comic Con?  He knows it’s possible and doesn’t seem the least bit surprised when Hurley points out that they have the same name.

9.  Having Hurley back on screen was a very welcome sight.  He’s hilarious and I love that he asks so many questions.  And re-writing The Empire Strikes Back?  Excellent!

10.   Maybe Hurley isn’t so crazy afterall, that he can talk to dead people and play games with dead people.  His gift is just a little bit *different* then Miles’. But what I want to know is why Hurley never talks to Libby?
11.   Mr Gray is the brother-in-law from Breaking Bad.  For anyone that hasn’t seen that show you must go immediately and rent a coyp and watch season one.

12. Oh boy, back to whiney Kate.  I agree, she needs to keep her mouth shut about Ben.  It’s nice that she feels bad for Roger, but she helped to save his son so can’t she take any relief in that?  She’s meddling where she needs to just back off (take a tip from Jack, Katester).

13.   I guess we can see where Miles gets his sense of humor from.  Pierre tells Hurley to keep quiet or he’ll be shoveling polar bear turds on Hydra Island.  But that douche is Miles’ dad.  Some great lines tonight.

14.  Looks like a major reveal tonight.  Widmore was the one who purchased the plane and sunk it in the ocean to look like 815.

15.   Jack in the classroom – erasing the information about Egypt on the blackboard.  Considering hieroglyphics are Egyptian, I would like to know why they are teaching the kids about the culture and what it has to do with the island.

16.   Jack defends Kate to Roger.  How sweet.  *cough, cough*

17.   Guess we also know now why Miles asked Ben (when Ben was captive) for $3.2 million.  He wants the money not to turn him in to Widmore’s people.
18.  OK, how does all of this huge construction equipment get to the island?

19.   Hm, shadow of the statue riddle again.  Makes me think that Ilana (with the same riddle) is working for Ben.

20.   Uh oh, Juliet’s in a red shirt.  Not a good sign for her.

21.   Remember the eye from the cabin that appears when Hurley is there?  I’m thinking that was Pierre.  I’m starting to think that Pierre might actually be Jacob.  If not, then he’s in that cabin for some reason.

22.   DAN!!!  I was just as glad to see Dan as I was when Locke came back.  But what the heck was he doing in Ann Arbor, hanging out with the Degroots?  And now that Dan is back, he can help the Losties get back to modern time and probably causing the “incident” in the meantime.  AND!  The tie is gone!

23.  The 100th episode.  Dang!

    People of LOST everywhere . . .

Let it be henceforth known that from this day forward . . . April 15th, 2009 (and whatever day it is in 1977) . . . THE. TIE. IS. OFF.

  2. SKID Says:

. . . and was the guy in the van the same guy that was on the beach with Ilana?

  3. Smith Says:

    SKID: yes

So now we have a new faction wanting control of the Island: whoever Bram and Ilana are working for. It seems as though Ben’s power is pretty much gone now, so I’m wondering if this war isn’t between Ben and Widmore so much as between Widmore and whoever this mysterious person is.

Perhaps Hawking? Jacob? Richard? I know it seems easy to imagine that Ben is behind it, but given that Ilana didn’t recognize his name I’m going to throw that theory away.

Maybe they’re a bunch of crazy cultists who worship the Island (what with the statue references). I don’t know.

  4. Smith Says:

I wonder how they knew that getting on that plane would get them to the Island. Maybe Hawking told them?

  5. Smith Says:

    …I miss the tie already.

  6. GaryG Says:

I absolutely loved Hurley re-writing The Empire Stikes Back. Funny as hell!

We are definitely seeing another side to everyone this season. But Hurley is still Hurley. Have you ever noticed that Hurley always seems to know what it is that the other people need? He built the golf course to get people’s minds off of being stranded on the island. He gave the radio to Sayid to fix to get Sayid’s mind off of Shannon. He tricked Sawyer into doing nice things when they needed a new leader. He got Charlie to help him with the van to get his mind off of dying. Now he’s working on Miles.

I’m glad we got to see more of Miles’ past. I was hoping they’d do this with the new people.

I’m still thinking those “Shadow of the Statue” people may have something to do with the DI or the Hanso Foundation. Another thing, we all assume that they’re talking about the Orchid station when they talk about what lies in the shadow of the statue. But remember, Jughead was also close to the well where they build the Orchid station and it must be buried near that location. But we know Hanso is still out there because of that Black Rock log book being sold at auction and purchased by Widmore. I still think that was a ploy to get it into Widmore’s hands in a not so obvious fashion.

Mr. Gray is also a name of an alien in the move Dream Catcher who was out to destroy mankind and take over the world. One of the strangest sci-fi movies. It also involves psychic abilities.

Smith: I wouldn’t count out Ben yet. He always seems to be strongest when he’s at a disadvantage. Remeber how he controled Jack and Locke when he was held at the hatch and again how he manipulated Locke when they held him at Otherville. Since Smokey didn’t kill Ben, it’s obvious the island still has uses for him.

I’m still not certain if because that guy was taking those papers concerning the plane and photos of the grave site to Widmore means that Widmore was involved with putting the plane in that trench. It sounds more like he was couriering the information to Widmore but was caught. Like he was on a spy mission. The same papers and photos Tom shows to Mike?

Another flub though. If Miles can only talk to the dead if their body is present, then how’d he find out where the drugs and money were when they first introduced him?

  7. GaryG Says:

You know, thinking about it, 1977 wasn’t just the year Star Wars came out, didn’t Kate say the envelope that Sawyer kept his letter to Locke’s father was from the US bicentennial? If so, then it’s the year Sawyer’s father kills his mother. I’m sure that thought must be in Sawyer’s mind.

  8. ashleyb Says:

So the whole thing about not being able to be on the island when your younger self is on island is so out the window now. I’ve been reading people specualting whether or not Chang was Miles’ dad but then countering themselves with it’s not possible becuse he would be on the island and you can’t be with yourself. Like i said not true now. So I’m back to trying to figure out why Ben didn’t go back to 1977 too. People kept using the argument above but….

  9. GaryG Says:

ashleyb: Yep, baby Miles is there, so that dumped that theory…lol. It must have to do with the island and IT decided who would go back to 1977 and who’d stay in the present. Locke being dead when he got to the island may still apply though, just like Charlotte didn’t time shift with Dan after she died. I’d still like to know what is with the many names of Chang/Candle/and-a-whole-long-list-of-other-names.

  10. GaryG Says:

Here’s another theory and it goes along with the time travel aspect of the island. Let’s say you were going to conduct research but you knew the final result of that reseach would take years to complete, maybe even hundreds or thousands of years to get the final product. If you had access to time travel, wouldn’t it make sense to send your research team back in time so that when that research was completed, they’d catch up to you in your present? You’d basically send them back in time somewhere isolated to do the reseach, then a few minutes later, fly to the physical location you sent them to and the team would be there (or their decendants) with the finished product of that research. Does that sound crazy? LOL!

  11. GaryG Says:

Oh, additionally to my last post. What if you did send that team back in time to do research and when you went to collect the final product, that team no longer wished to share the results with you. What would happen? Would it result in a conflict?

  12. ashleyb Says:

    GaryG-

I like that theory. Are you thinking that maybe Chang (or whatever) did that? Maybe that’s why he has so many names. Maybe it’s not Change but actually those other people. Or maybe they are aliases and he has to use them when he’s in another time so he won’t be found out…I’m confused.

  13. GaryG Says:

ashleyb: It was just a theory. I was kind of thinking of Richard when I thought of it with his always having been on the island. Check out my post on last weeks show about Richard maybe being an android, which is why he doesn’t age. But with Chang and team (he uses so many names…lol) I don’t know how people in the DI cannot know he’s the same person. I mean, hey, there’s Chang, and there’s Candle, and look over there, there’s Halifax, don’t they all look the same to you other DI guys? It was one thing when he was using different names on the indoc videos, but now we see him using different names there on the island. Is he the same person? Twins X10? Or clones?

  14. ashleyb Says:

See that’s what i was tryign to say is what if he is there on the island as these different people but is just from the future or the past and or his relatives or something. A little weird but i don’t know. just throwing it out there. I saw your richard = android thwory last week. I don’t know.

  15. GaryG Says:

lol, ya, me either. But when I think of an idea, I like to dump it out there even if it sounds crazy. In the end, there’ll have to be some explaination that will make sense to us and hopefully it’ll make more sense than that movie I mention above, Dream Catcher – I’d hate if if the island was invaded by a bunch of butt weasles (you’d have to see the movie)…lol.

  16. Foffman Says:

I’m not sure if I subconsciously made this up or not… But did the writers say that one important aspect to the storyline would be twins?

  17. ashleyb Says:

Foffman- where did you hear that? That’s interesting.

  18. GaryG Says:

Foffman: There’s been some buzz that Penny and Dan are supposed to be twins.

  19. ashleyb Says:

I’ve speculated that they were brother and sister but then when Widmore got booted from the island for having a child with an outsider i threw that out the window because Ben said child not children and we know faraday’s mom is hawking.

  20. GaryG Says:

ashleyb: Ya, I agree. It’s just something I read on another site. I wish I could watch the shows over again. You catch so much more the 2nd and 3rd time around. I don’t know if the woman had the child or if she was pregnant. If she’s pregnant, then she could be carrying twins and they wouldn’t know yet. Um, though I just thought of something, considering the title of this show and it’s reference to Star Wars, that’d be that whole Luke and Leia thing, twin children seperated at birth.

  21. GaryG Says:

By the way, I agree with Hurley, I thought the Ewoks sucked! And George Lucas never should have messed with the original movies.

  22. SKID Says:

Quick question . . . and I usually hate trite connections made in haste, but having said that . . .

ANY chance that Alvarez’s “Andrea” (that Miles “heard” him talk about) is Annie?

. . . or was she just mentioned by name to highlight Miles humanity beneath his cynical surface???

I still maintain that whatever happens to Annie is what sends Ben over the edge.

Wacko prediction: Maybe SHE dies in childbirth giving birth to . . . Karl and THAT is why Ben wanted to keep them apart. Even though not related by blood, there is a Luke/Leia thing going on between he and Alex?)

As I read back over this it looks JUST like the theories I skim over and even want to throw into a pile of polar poop, but I found it odd that Andrea was mentioned so prominently . . . AND I keep waiting for Annie’s return.

  23. Hurleys honey Says:

What lies in the shadow of the statue? I don’t know but I think the statue is a Wookiee!!! :)

“Wookiees are deeply respectful of nature, and have a strong connection to the sanctity of their world’s ecology. When the Empire began exploiting the Wookiee homeworld, it was as if the giant people felt the pain inflicted upon Kashyyyk. Wookiees have also shown their own particular affinity for the Force. ” from starwars.com

    HaHaHaHa….

  24. Foffman Says:

If anyone sees this in the next few minutes, watch Jimmy Fallon on NBC, coming up in just a few minutes. I’m pretty sure Michael Emerson (Ben Linus) is gonna be on it!

  25. ashleyb Says:

Skid-I like that theory of the connection between Carl and Alex.

Off subject- dod anyone watch Bones last night? Alex was on it and she was great.

  26. GaryG Says:

……………Oh, No……………I just saw on the news and it seems like the actors are going to go on strike this year!!!

SKID: It’d be cool if it turned out that Carl and Alex were related. But in 1977, it’d mean Carl would be older than Kate. Of course, there’s that time travel thing. But I do think Ben would have said something before Carl and Alex started sleeping together if they were related.

Hurley honey: As long as the statue isn’t an Ewok, I’m okay with that. The boar they hunted kind of did remind me of womp-rats.

Dang-it, I wish I got to see both those shows Foffman and ashleyb.

  27. Foffman Says:

Yeah, Fallon had him read Little Boy Blue as creepy as he could. They dimmed the lights and stuff, and he was just as scary reading Little Boy Blue as he was when we first saw that smirk on him while being kept prisoner in the hatch.

Gotta wait two weeks for the 100th epi. Grr.

Hurley and his Empire Strikes Back references really made this one for me. Coincidentally just happened to catch Jedi on cable flipping channels this weekend. Ewoks did suck.
