Initial Thoughts: The Economist
I started off thinking this episode was really slow then true to form, for every one answer we got another 12 questions.
WARNING: If you haven’t watched the episode don’t read this. There is a major twist at the end.
1. What is up with this bracelet? It reads, “N, I’ll always be with you. RG.” Elsa is wearing one that we can see when she is getting ready for the opera and when Sayid is in bed with her right before he kills her. Is it something with the organization Sayid/Ben/Naomi works for? Does Mr Creepy Eyed Man have something to do with it? He is the one that hired Naomi. Seems MCEM would also want Sayid for “missions” considering all the skills he has and that he is a ruthless killer. Sayid gets to the boat and could be Ben’s mole that he can’t tell them the name of. My sis is convinced that Sayid is the mole.
2. Red towel on Sayid’s golf bag should have been a sign that someone was going to die (red has been the death theme all three seasons). But where does this guy who pulls up to Sayid even come from? I may not know much about golf but you don’t just come up to someone who’s about to hit a shot in the middle of the course for nothing. He’s not trying to pass and he even offers him a ride to the next hole. But he can clearly see Sayid is in the middle of this hole. Then, when Sayid tells him who he is, the man seems frightened and tries to leave. Did Ben send him there and why does this guy need a killing? Is he part of Dharma and they are slowly killing them off one by one? Ben killed them on the island so I’m sure he’s not above killing them off the island. This new guys tells Sayid he’s the only one on the course all morning. Suspicious, don’t you think?
3. I just watched the scene again. This guys works for Oceanic or whoever set it up to look like they died on that plane. THAT is why he freaks out when Sayid tells him who he is.
4. Looking back at the “previously on…” why was Frank studying every single name on the manifest if they thought or were told that there were no survivors from the flight?
5. So starting in the cafe, Sayid and Elsa were both playing each other. Ben actually sends them both there.
6. I knew the second Elsa had that red dress on that she was going to die. Then to see that bracelet, it was all over for her.
7. Loved, loved, loved Sawyer’s suggestion to start shooting off Ben’s toes. First you start with the big toe and send that piggy to market. Then you move on to the roast beef. Hilarious!
8. Interesting that everyone seems to have insight into the survivors but Frank didn’t know about Sayid’s background.
9. Why can’t Locke see the cabin? Aaron starts crying when they get to the location also.
10. Notice all the playground equipment at the barracks? There weren’t any children. Why all the equipment? It didn’t look old like it had not been used since Dharma. Miles even says something about a daycare being there.
11. So there is a 1/2 hour (31 minutes to be exact) time lag from on versus off the island. This should explain some of the growth when Walt comes back.
12. I thought for sure when Sayid found Ben’s secret closet he was also going to find a secret way off of the island. He might have found something for all we know and that is why Sayid wanted off of the island. Maybe he thought he could use the worm hole back to the island to save the others. Why doesn’t Sayid tell the others what he has found? It’s more costumes (like the ones from the lockers).
13. Why does Kate call Sawyer “James?” Everyone using proper names has been weird.
14. Did you notice when Kate is looking under the bed at Ben’s house the feet she sees coming in look just like when Saywer was a young boy and he saw the feet of his father coming into his room.
15. How sweet, Sawyer wants to play house with Kate. Just in time for Valentines’s Day!
16. The list! Another list!
17. Why does Sayid care about getting Naomi’s body back to the boat? This guys knows so much that we haven’t seen yet! He knows something to do with that bracelet that makes her special.
18. Why does Desmond want to go to the boat when he knows it’s not Penny’s boat? Obviously Frank and Dan “do” know about Penny from the looks they gave each other. Will be interested to see the boat scenes but I’m sure there won’t be much of that until near the end of the 8 episodes. Who does Desmond think on the boat is going to tell him about Penny when it’s NOT HER BOAT!
19. I wonder if Kate really wanted to stay behind with Sawyer or if Sayid pretty much left her.
20. Why does Sayid meet Ben in the dog kennel of all places and when did Ben get to know so much about medicine?
21. Who are they after (Ben and Sayid)? Must be the people who either purposely crashed the plane or covered it up and left them to die.
22. In the rerun before the new epi, the pop up said that the woman with Dan was not his wife but was his caretaker. This guys must have issues.
23. Sayid says something to Elsa about the old technology her boss uses. Should have been a clue that her boss was Ben.
24. Sayid closes Elsa’s eyes tenderly just like he does to Naomi. Still thinking there is more going on there.
25. When Desmond asks Frank flat out if he has ever heard of “Penny” Widmore he and Dan both say no. but perhaps they know the Widmore name, not Penny specifically. Maybe they were hired by Poppa Widmore.
26. Jack was so set to get off the island and now he lets the dead body of Naomi go before he gets on the helicopter. Yes, now that Kate decided to stay behind.
27. So Sayid is killing to protect his friends? Which ones, the Oceanic Six or all those left back on the island?

GG-Why do you think Elsa was working for Ben too? Why would he want to set them both up? To see which one was better? Why would he need them to eliminate one another? I’m a little lost there.
Great episode though. I’m with you though, I think its Sayid who is Ben’s man on the boat. I think Ben knows some of the future and he knew Sayid would be getting on the boat for him. Not sure how that all works but I’m with you that Sayid’s the man.

Nate - I think that it was Ben’s voice that was talking to her right after she shot Sayid. One of the first things her “boss” asks is if Sayid is alive. I think Ben “hired” her because he wanted Sayid to kill her. He set her up. But he had to take his time paging Elsa to give Sayid plenty of time to kill her. I don’t think he wanted Sayid dead because he needs him to do his killing. I think Ben set up Elise.
Hope this is making more sense.

do you guys know if the 7 iron is the club they had on the island and that’s why sayid was comfortable with it? just a side thought….
anyway, just like i said, these bro’s are definitely from widmore, man. 4 shore. and the freighter is the Paik/Hanso freighter 4 shore.
February 15th, 2008 at 9:18 am
I think those guys from the freighter could take ben with them, but later ben, sayid and ben’s spy took over the control of the ship and that how they managed to get off the island, and maybe they are killing everyone who knows something about that island to protect sayid’s friends that are on the island. Maybe he will have to kill the other oceanic 5…
and that rocket that was launched from the freighter arrived 31 minutes late, but on the freighter it took about 10 seconds (?). That means that 10 seconds off the island = 31 minute on the island. ??
You were right about this time issue, and thats why walt has grown up…
That means that the time on the island is about 180 times slower…..
February 15th, 2008 at 10:06 am
i don’t think that sayid is ben’s man from the boat.because that is practical imposible.they will work togheter after they take off from the island but there is no way that they know eachother or sayid to know the people from the boat…it is very posible that the boat is widmore’s because in the episode flash before your eyes , when desmon went to get a job from mr widmore there were some strange picture with a polar bear an the word” namaste” written backwards…anyway great episode…i think we just have to wait…
February 15th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
interesting thought on elsa working for ben but i agree with nate.
plus - why would sayid need all this time to date her and then kill her? why not do it after their first dinner?
i get the feeling that elsa & naomi and the helicopter 4 are on the creepy eye’s team while sayid (future sayid and MAYBE present sayid) is on ben’s team. ben’s team is essentially “the others” and creepy eye’s team is dharma/hanso and want ben dead …
the losties will all find their place soon enough, but right now we have “locke’s team” and “jack’s team” for our losties … for now ..
or at least - this is the direction they want us to believe for right now …
am i completely missing something ???
February 15th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
The ben + sayid working thing is really similar to the Heroes bennet + (the indian guy I don’t remember his name).
Ben is some kind of villian as bennet was that will work with his “enemy”…
February 15th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
OMG pay attention, please.
Some of the stuff you say makes no sense (like you aren’t even watching).
Elsa can’t be on Ben’s team, after Sayid kills her and talks to Ben, he says now the other people on the list will know he is coming, Ben says good. There fore it is us and them not us an us, ie ben and ben.
And the playground and buildings have been maintained by the others since Dharma, kids include Dharma Kids (Ben), even his daughter and Karl. Notice the unraked leaves since the others have abandoned the barracks.

GG, What do you think the chances are that Jack and Kate are not part of the Oceanic 6? We know that they get off the island, but they have never been labled as part of this group. Hurley and Sayid both state that they were part of the Oceanic 6, but not Kate & Jack. Also, if we are to believe that everybody we’ve seen get off the island is part of the 6, then does that mean that Ben is also part of the 6? If Kate, Jack, and Ben are part of the 6 then does that mean that Claire is the only other one to get off the island? Hmmmm…..What an episode!!
February 15th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Sorry, I didn’t make my last sentence very clear. What I meant was if Kate, Jack, and Ben are part of the 6 and Desmond’s vision was right, then we have to assume that Claire is the only other Lostie that gets to leave the island. But what if Claire ISN’T part of the 6 that come home at this time. Does this mean that she just gets rescued by another helicopter later on, or could it meant that Desmond’s vision was wrong. If that’s the case could Charlie still be alive? Hopefully next weeks episode will start to answer some of these questions.

IM; It’s my blog and I can say anything nonsensical that I want. Once ABC starts sponsoring my blog maybe I’ll worry about comments like yours. PLUS, isn’t the whole idea of this show is that each of us has a varying take on what is happening or what things mean? Just like life I suppose. Neither of us are right or wrong, but we are both allowed our opinions. Lastly, this is a friendly blog and I would appreciate you containing your insults for the bigger boards where people go to slam each others theories.

Crazyray: I think that they are part of the six but it’s a very interesting observation. I don’t remember Jack saying anything labeling himself as one of the six, but didn’t he indicate at one point about being famous or something to that effect? The doctor in the hospital knew who he was (I’m pretty sure he referenced him as a hero). I would think that whoever is keeping the Losties on the island are probably even more interested in keeping those not on the plane there. Imagine the stories they would have to tell — but how would they ever prove it? I would think a Juliet or Desmond would have to go back very quietly and try to blend back in. Probably how people who see UFO’s feel.
February 15th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
And yes, I think that they come back for the rest of the survivors and that is when Claire gets rescued - like from Desmond’s vision.

If I remember right he tells Kate that he is using his golden ticket to fly to Japan and back or something like that because he’s hoping that he crashes. I know it’s an off the wall thought, but he could have gotten that ticket if he got off the island some other time too.

Crazyray: so you are thinking Jack has been off and on the island more than once?
February 16th, 2008 at 1:43 am
The idea that there’s more than just the 6 that eventually get off of the island seems pretty popular, and I think I’m gonna jump onto the bandwagon.
As far as Jack being called a hero… for some reason I feel like I remember someone calling him “a hero twice over.” But I could be wrong.
To I.M. Naughtwatchin:
Let it go, dude. Posting theories is great, but there’s no need to bash other people’s theories. And I have to admit… I don’t really understand what’s the importance or significance of the unraked leaves.
ben linus… There definitely is a time difference on and off the island, but I have a hard time believing that it’s 180 times different. My theory is that maybe both of those “clocks” were actually timers that started at 0:00:00 at the same time. When Dan compared them at the same time, the clock that was originally on the island said 2:45:04, while the clock that landed on the island said 3:16:23. (notice the use of the numbers 4, 16, and 23
If my theory is right, time moves 1.1855 time faster off the island. In other words, a day on the island is 1.1855 days off the island (1 day, 4 hours). The only problem with this is that, based solely on seeing the older Walt, time would move much faster than 1.1855 times faster. Granted, we don’t know if we actually saw Walt, or if it was Jacob…
I hope that all made sense…

Isn’t it true that all of the pregnant women who give birth on the island die? If that’s the case, how is it that Ben’s daughter is alive as is her mother? Alex’s mother would have had to get prego off the island and end up on the island, but hasn’t she been on the island for way longer than 16 years? I’m confused and I think I may be missing something.
Also, do you think it could be possible that Sayid was pretending to be one of the losties the entire time after the others heard the crash? I definitely think he knew naomi, and there is definitely a significance with the bracelet–why was sayid meditating right before he stood up and went over to naomi? I think there is so much there that we don’t know about sayid.
February 16th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
ladynred:
Alex wasn’t born on the island. She arrived there when she was a baby… I think it’s explained in season 1 or two, don’t remember
February 16th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
GG, the thought has crossed my mind, but I just can’t get a real theory going based on the fact that Jack has been off and on the island more than once yet.
What I meant in my last post was that if Jack wasn’t part of the Oceanic 6, but gets off the island at a later time, they could still have given him the golden ticket. I just don’t think that it’s a given that Jack and Kate are part of the 6 yet. That could very well get shot down next week, I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.
February 17th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Crazyray, thanks for going out on a limb. Right or wrong, it’s cool to peek inside your head for these ideas. I think that Jack has only been off one time, but there isn’t any reason for me to necessarily argue against your theory. Maybe the first time he posed as someone else?
