Initial Thoughts: The Shape of Things to Come

Hello friends! Was that freaking fantastic or what?

1. I liked how Vincent was there barking at the dead body. Where death is…. there is Vincent!

2. Ray had his throat slit. He was the doctor. Jack is the doctor. Maybe *they* don’t want the doctor to fix people. The only reason I can figure that the doctor is alive on the boat (according to the code) is that time is actually moving more slowly *off* of the island, which is completely different than what I thought.

3. So, according to Hurley “Australia is the key to the whole game.” Clue from the writers or red herring?

4. Code 14J. Nothing significant I can think about right now. Any thoughts?

5. Both of Ben’s eyes opening when he wakes up in the desert. He probably is pretty aware of everything going on and himself.

6. Falliwax was the name on his coat. Ben is coming from somewhere obviously very cold and then travels to the desert. But, Charlotte also found the Dharma polar bear in Tunisia so maybe there is some *time* there that is very cold that they travel from.

7. Ben can kick some major boooty! I think the secret to his *traveling* was the little black device he was carrying. But it also reminded me of the little walkie talkie things the Star Trek guys used to carry when they wanted beamed back tot he ship.

8. I’ll be interested to find out why it’s so important to Ben that Locke survives whatever is about to happen. Yes, he can *talk* to Jacob but can’t Miles also? Maybe Ben actually likes his company.

9. OK, what was up with the dummies that heard the gunshots outside the cabins and kept coming out! Duh!

10. Claire must be special to survive the house blowing up. Seriously. Desmond and Locke also survived the hatch blowing up and we know that there is something special about them both. Guess we will eventually see.  I also liked how when Claire first came to after blowing up she said, “Charlie?”
11. Dean Moriarity is the catalyst for most of the adventures of the book “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac. In the book, Dean is the “the holy con-man with the shining mind.” He’s a traveler. Dean is the name Ben gives to the desk clerk in Tunisia.

12. Jacob is the only person who can help. Miles will be able to talk to him! How convenient! Maybe these guys really want Jacob and not Ben. But they know Ben will go to Jacob for help thus leading them to him. Miles says he’s going to the beach but maybe he circles back. Actually, I want Miles to talk to Jacob. How cool!

13. Poor Sayid. Got Nadia back. Then taken away. Horrible! Looks like Ben might have even had something to do with that being set up.

14. Jack must have had a toothache to need Bernard. Or he needs a surgery and Bernard is the only one that can handle it. I can’t see Juliet doing it because she cares for Jack. I’m sure Bernard has done some cutting in his profession. We know Jack lives whatever it is.

15. I’m not convinced that the guy Ben tells Sayid killed Nadia really did it. Remember when Sawyer is set up to kill the guy in Australia that he thinks killed his father? I think Ben wanted this guy dead and Sayid did the dirty work for him.

16. OK that black smoke scene was the bomb! OMG! And it was freaking angry! How does Ben have that control over Smokey? I can’t wait to see more. And smokey just blows right past them and doesn’t bother him while he’s saying goodbye to Alex.

17. Which, by the way, I was totally SHOCKED that they just killed her off like that. Did they really think Ben was going to surrender after they killed her? And what was up with those rules?

18. You know it’s not a good thing happening around them when Aaron is crying. And that baby was wailing when Hurley agreed to go with Locke and Ben to Jacob’s shack.

19. Widmore was drinking the same scotch as what Desmond was making in the monastery.

20. Ben and Widmore are constants. That is why they can’t kill each other.

21. But now it’s even more obvious why Widmore helps Desmond (remember in Desmond’s time travel epi) to find Penny. He knows that Desmond will protect her no matter what.

22. The picture of the Black Rock is hanging behind Widmore’s bed.

23. I’m thinking that Widmore’s people are the one’s that Ben killed (the original Dharma). Ben had jammed the signal so Widmore couldn’t find the island again.

24.  I loved seeing the good guy, hero Sawyer in this episode.  Will have to screencap some of the classic Sawyer “looks” that we saw again this week.

LOVED IT!!!!

“If you touch one hair on his curly head, I swear I’ll kill you!”
    That line was awesome.

If Ben was right when he said that the people attacking them would not risk killing him, then why did they blow up the house Claire was in before they even knew who was in it? Ben could have easily been in that house. Idiots…

AND THAT SMOKE MONSTER WAS INCREDIBLE! Obviously it didn’t kill the guy who shot Alex (I don’t remember his name). I wonder how he escaped from that.

It boggles my mind that these writers had the main idea of this whole thing all thought out before they even started. At least, I think they did… Still unbelieveable though.

You’re so right! I bet Ben and Widmore are each other’s Constants! Great pick-up!

    FANTASTIC episode.

  3. Dane Says:

F**KING BLACK SMOKE MONSTER ROCKS THE HOUSE, YESSSSSSSS

    miles + jacob 4 lyfe

uhh what else…i was almost sure that ben going into that room within a room within a room (which was badass in itself btw) was going to lead to him time-traveling to tunisia in the beginning of the episode, which for all i know he went right through that room to some arctic place and time traveled a year into the future…actually…the london part could have been a little flash-present by itself and just be ben time-traveling to london in a year and talking to widmore…nah, that’s crazy talk, he went through that weirdo door and got the monster, that’s what that was about.

anyway, i’m really excited about ben being a time traveler, it is really really really awesome. and Jack starts his pill-poppin’ habits! was he taking pills in the episode where he saw hurley on TV? i think so right?

I wonder if smokey does some sort of time correction. If something is changed off the island that affects someone/thing on the island - smokey takes care of it. I don’t have a lot to support this - just something I thought last night.

  5. Crazyray7391 Says:

GG, I was just thinking, back in The Economist Ben asks Sayid if he remembers the last time he thought with his heart, or something like that. Do you think that could be referring to when Sayid is told to kill Penny? When Ben told Widmore that he was going to kill Penny, my first thought was how Sayid would react to that news. Sayid knows that Des loves Penny, I don’t think Sayid would be able to bring himself to kill Penny, and I have no idea what the consequences of not killing her would be. Just thought that could be a very interesting scenario in the future.

The smoke monster scene was awesome!! I actually was expecting smokie to come in and save Alex. How in the world did ANY of Widmore’s goons survive that thing. That was just crazy.

I thought the best line of the show last night was after Sayid killed the guy that we think killed Nadia, and he just kept shooting and Ben said something like “I think that’s enough” (I’ve only seen the episode once so far, I’ll have to watch it again after work). I mean you feel bad about what happened to Sayid, but that line was awesome.

Did they ever say why Hurley seems to be the only one capable of seeing Jacob’s cabin now? We know that Locke hasn’t been able to find it, but now Ben can’t either? I thought that was a bit odd.

Finally, I had been reading all week that we were absolutely going to find out the fate of Danielle in this episode. The only time I heard any reference to her at all was when Alex told Ben that they had killed Karl and her mom. Did I miss something along the way or was that little exchange supposed to let us know for sure that Danielle is dead?

  6. tyrone biggums Says:

Did I miss something or just misremembering something ? Why do you keep saying Miles can talk to Jacob ?

So far we saw Jacob talked to Locke, Hurley saw the cabin and ran but I don’t remember anything about Miles talking to him ? Are you just assuming this because Miles talks to ” dead peoples spirits ” ? and If so then you would be assuming that Jacob is some sort of spirit who is just chilling at the island do we have proof of any of this ?

just wondering if I missed something

  7. Gitsie Girl Says:

Miles = can talk to dead
    Jacob = dead

  8. Scott C Says:

    1) Maybe it’s been said a thousand times before, maybe not (I don’t remember it) but I think Vincent is named after “Vincent Price” the way he shows up in the shadow of death, or carrying body parts. ;-)

    3) “Australia is the key…” Brilliantly funny writing.

    4) 14j. Check out this link:
    http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjobs/a/14j.htm
    Here’s a cut/paste of part:
Army Enlisted Job Descriptions and Qualification Factors
14J - Air Defense Tactical Operations Center Operator
Major duties. The air defense tactical operations center operator supervises or serves as a member of a manual early warning network (MEWN) section, team, or platoon in operations and intelligence functions.

7a) Ben is a badass. Wow.
7b) Communicator. hehe. Guess I’m not going to make the “red-shirted ensign” joke on #9 that I originally intended.

    10) I think it is possible that Claire was blown out the back of the building not in the middle of it.

    15) Spot on. I’m not convinced Ben didn’t do it to get Sayid with him.

    19) Wasn’t the Scotch the same that Widmore had in his office when Desmond visited him about Penny and Widmore totally dissed him? Didn’t Desi make wine?

    20) If this isn’t the reason - i.e., Ben and Widmore are each other’s constants - then the writers will only WISH they had such a killer idea as this. Awesome catch.

    22) Good catch. For a brief moment I was envisioning Widmore as captain of the Black Rock and Ben as first mate or ship’s fool or something. They crash-on/discover the island and live forever. Throw in a little Pirates of the Caribbean writing. But hey… we saw Ben being born so this doesn’t work. But still… for a brief moment, a whole new storyline came to mind.

    LOVED THIS EPISODE!

  9. tyrone biggums Says:

Miles = can talk to dead
    Jacob = dead

    ________

but your assuming this, I mean your probably right but this hasn’t been proven,

also if it was true Miles would still have to know where to go to summon the spirit of Jacob and he doesn’t know where the cabin is, and I don’t think Miles forces the spirits to talk to him I think they he can communicate if they are willing I’m not sure Jacob would respond to someone who came to the island on such hostile terms

  10. Rob Says:

ben and widmore are eachothers constants?? i like the idea but im sorry i cant see it. after that scene what was going through my mind was that they’ve both been on the island, and so neither of them can die until the island is finished with them, in the same way michael couldn’t kill himself because the island still needed him, anyone agree?

awesome episode tho, only just got it in uk.
also did anyone else notice how ben became much dirtier when he came out of his super secret room that he sumoned the black smoke from? as in like became covered in black dust?????

love the idea of the london part being a “flash-present” anyone reckon theres a link between bens secret room and the door from the others camp in series 2??

    ahh so many questions!!!!!!!!!!!
