Initial Thoughts: What Kate Does

Pop ups are evil.  I mean, if you don’t know about Jack’s dad and the coffin then you need to turn off your set and go back and rent Season One.  Then they tell us right after the fireworks go off that “Richard knows what the signal means.”  Really?  No kidding?  It’s a good thing they told us or I would have thought that Richard was confused and thought it was the Fourth of July.  Duh!  We have loyally put in 5, going on 6, years of time and thought into Lost so how could anyone possibly know what we know by watching 42 minutes of pop ups?

1.  When Lennon tells them that if they don’t save Sayid they would be in “trouble” I don’t think that he means kindergarten trouble but more like “we are screwed” trouble.  But if the darkness takes over they really are in trouble!

2.  Does anyone ever come out of that water not taken over by darkness?  Was Claire dead and baptized there?

3.  Darlton said we’d get the numbers in a “big” way.  Ne numbers, or old numbers?  There were a lot of numbers this week.  Will have to go slowly and get them all.

4.  Kate reallllly looks like she knows Jack when she sees him outside of the airport.  And not a look like she saw him on the plane.  Dejavu again?

5.  We are getting answers. I think they showed us Lennon walking around without shoes so we have no doubt that these are the Others that we saw “way back” walking through the jungle.  They are the Others that took the kids.  Seems like they really do want to protect them.  Explains why they took the kids.  Protect them from this “darkness.”

6.  OK, it’s Season Six and NOW Jack starts asking all the questions?  Glad to see it but wow, it took long enough.

7.  Sawyer said back in Season One “every man for himself” and he’s doing it again.

8.  At some point Kate needs to stop going back for people.  It doesn’t seem to work out very well for her.  She went back to Otherton to get Jack, in the sub to get Sawyer and back to Claire and who knows where she’ll end up.

9.  Did you hear Kate call Sawyer “James?”  She has never called him James.

10.  The test for Sayid is Ash (keeps out smokey), electricity (also kept smokey out of Otherton) but I didn’t understand the branding.

11.  They also tortured Sayid in a similar way that Danielle did when she first caught him.

12.   Death by fire (Jacob), life through water (Sayid).

13.  Why “would” Claire come to the States to adopt out the baby?  It didn’t seem like she was all that surprised that they didn’t pick her up or that the lady’s husband had left.  Maybe the fortune teller told her that she had to.

14.  So I thought that when Danielle talked about “the sickness” it was something to do with Smokey taking over.  But from the sounds of what Dogan says, the sickness is more then that.  Remember when Ethan was giving Claire the vaccination?  Desmond took it in the hatch.  Seems there is more there then I thought.

15.  Nice Zombie shout out.  Darlton jokes that they are putting in a Zombie.

16.  So Claire is now putting traps out like Danielle used to.  The new Other guy started to talk about it but the little guy stopped him.

17.  I guess we can see that Kate is meant to be with Aaron.  Just how much we are yet to see.

18.  Love it, Ethan!  I thought it would be Juliet but I guess he was very obsessed with Claire back on the island so it makes sense that he’d be there.  Then to say that he doesn’t like to use needles – oh the irony.

19. Ethan was “Rom” in Season One.  Now he’s Ethan Goodspeed.  Not sure I still trust that guy.  Seems suspicious.  And a OBGYN or Pediatrician.  Hmmmm.

20.  Ethan tells her that Aaron is going to be a “handful.”  I guess we’ll see.

21.  Live together or die alone.  Sawyer says some of us are meant to be alone.  Not sure I believe that is his fate.  I’m sure Hurley can relate to what he’s feeling.

22.  I didn’t get the symbolism of the baseball Dogan had.  Jack and his dad talked baseball.  I think Eko played as a kid with his brother.  Others you can think of?

23.  Dogan was “brought there.”  Hm, seems there is a clue there to Jack that he was “brought there” as well.  I keep seeing in commercials that Jack is somewhere with Dogan and asks how his name is on something.

24.  It really sounds like Kate gave her name to the hospital as “Joan of Arc.”  I think it was Joan Hart but that is not what it sounded like.

25.  Does something happen where Claire dies and Kate is mistaken for her because she uses the credit card Claire gave her?  Somehow they find her, thinking she’s Claire, and give her that baby.  Could be a car accident or Ethan’s people try to take the baby and hurt her in the process.  She was not meant to raise that baby, according to the card reader in Season One.

26.  Why do the new Others want to protect these guys so much?  Is it something to do with Mrs. Hawkings theory that they all have to be there?  Or does Smokey just kill everybody and they care about their safety? Or the “darkness” takes over anyone unprotected?

27.  Claire is looking rough.  Finally, she took the makeup off!

28.  And, to end on a note and go to bed…. I think that we may see Mrs Hawkings back in the new time line trying to get the course of events back on track.

  1. Jack Says:

In Season 1, the psychic/card reader told Claire that she must be the one to raise the baby (Aaron). He said something along the lines that bad things would happen if she was not the one who raised the child. I guess it could be possible she was told something different in the alternate reality, though. It was good to see Claire again. And the bad ass Kate is reminiscent of how she seemed in Season 1.

What was the significance of that little trinket around Dogen’s neck that he grasped when he found out that Sayid was alive? I noticed it last week, but he obviously grabbed it when he got the news.

Looks like a “key” of some sort . . . or maybe a dog whistle for Vincent. :)

    . . . and that typewriter?

And I may be way off base here (and I posted this somewhere last week but not sure where) but that sand in the hourglass looks just like the sand from the little vial that Alpert showed toddler Locke when he tested him. Remember? There was the compass, the knife, the comic book and a little jar of speckled sand. I know sand is sand, but this looked similar.

    What’s up with the hourglass?

re: your show about the people on an island (and now, on AND off the island)

    To whom it may concern,

    The person who insists on running the L O S T promos that say “The . . . time . . . for . . . questions . . . is . . . OVER.”

    . . . should be fired.

I find it to be misleading.

I read a theory on darkUFO that Aaron, if raised by Claire, becomes Jacob, and if raised by another becomes MiB aka Not Locke or whatever, and the two on the island are from the two different timelines, and smokey wants to go home to the other timeline. i think that kinda makes sense…

wow, Wow, WOW! All great comments. I’m going to have to try and screencap the necklace. I didn’t think about it but you are right, Dogan does keep clutching it. Good call! I think I have screencaps of Richard’s visit to young Locke, will have to go back and see all of the items. AND I love the Aaron theory, thanks for sharing. Makes sense to me….

I actually think that Ethan’s last name being Goodspeed is a big hint at WHEN the island sank. It would have to be some time before he became an Other, which was, we can gather, during childhood. Early teens is the youngest “Other” version of Ethan that we’ve seen. Because in this new timeline, he goes by Goodspeed (which was his given last name) and is, we can only assume, as kind as he acts, there’s every reason to suspect that the island sank anywhere from the time the bomb went off til just before he became an Other. My money’s on when the bomb went off. If he left the island with his mother that day, he would have grown up in the real world, with the name Goodspeed with no “Other” influences in his life.

All of this also continues to echo events as they happened on the island, cementing the fact that even in an alternate timeline, their fates are the same. Ethan WOULD come in contact with a pregnant Claire because it’s how it’s meant to play out. It just so happens that sticking her with needles this time around was for completely different reasons under completely different circumstances.

  6. Alex G Says:

By the way, all of the conjecture about when the island sank made my heart leap a little when I considered that if the bomb went off in the 1970’s, Juliet would have never come to the island. She’s probably off in Miami right now, chilling with her nephew. Ahh, just the thought of it. It puts my wearing Juliet-loving soul at ease.

  7. Alex G Says:

Or…rather, if the bomb went off, causing the island to SINK in the 1970’s. Any my soul is weary, not wearing. Haha. Wish there was an edit feature on comments!

My wife came up with an interesting thought while watching last nights episode. What if back in Season 1 when Claire was dreaming that they came to take her baby she was seeing Ethan et al. in the alternate timeline. This would also go along with the theory that someone posted last week that John Locke was healed in the island timeline because Jack healed him in the alternate non-island timeline. This would mean that the timelines have been interacting with eachother for a while now.

  9. GaryG Says:

One thing to remember, in the alternate time-line where Flight 815 landed in LA X, it’s 2004, on the island it’s 2007.

In the alternate time-line where Ethan is Goodspeed, that where the Dharma guys sent all their women and children off the island before the H-bomb was exploded and the island sunk back in 1977. So eveyone left on the island most likely died and Ethan was never recruited into the Others after The Purge. In fact the Purge never happened, Widmore was never banished for having a child by a woman on the mainland (Penny) and Ben was with the Others so wasn’t sent off the island with the other Dharma children. Also, Danielle and her team never wrecked on the island either. There would be no Widmore Industries and no boat race around the world for Desmond to enter to try and win Penny who never would have been born. Though I admit, it’s close with Penny – it all depends on when Widmore began is off island affair. If Penny were born in 1977 she’d be 27 in 2004. So that’s close and hard to call. It wasn’t until Ben grown up a bit and after the Purge that he kicked Widmore off the island. But Juliet’s sister would have died of cancer since Jacob was the one who cured her.

I’ll have to take a look next week and hope they show what Dogen is wearing around his neck. I know some Budist wear a little prayer thing around their necks, kind of like the Native Americans used to wear a medicine bag.

For the two time-lines, I wonder if they’ll hurry the alternate one along to get it to 2007 as well. It’d be hard to bring Walt back in if they remain in 2004 since he definitely no longer looks like he’s 10. But then they may not show him anymore since they didn’t show him and Michael on the plane.

Okay, we assume that it’s Jacob or maybe the Man in Black who’s possessing Sayid. But, last season in 1977, don’t you remember Sayid shooting someone in pretty much the same location as Sayid’s wound and then bringing that same person to the temple to be healed? Now Ben in this time-line is still alive, but if the island sank in the other with young Ben still on it and if his soul is able to cross over to this timeline… Well, just a thought. Yikes, what a world it’d be with 2 Bens!!!

  10. Brian Palmer Says:

I whole heartedly agree with you alex!! i got made fun of for a day cause i was sobbing when they killed juliet. she is the best character ever!!

  11. mm Says:

    Man in Black thought:
maybe the Man in Black’s original form is smokey, but he uses people’s bodies once they die in order to communicate and influence other people (pawn’s) decisions. Maybe when they show the Man in Black talking to Jacob on the beach, he is just “using” a body, but Jacob obviously can tell when it is smokey cause he knew Lock was Not-Lock

  12. GaryG Says:

You know, TV shows sometimes change things to suit their audiences. But way back in the first few seasons, they suggested that different people saw Smokey in different ways. Some people saw Smokey as dark smoke and negative and other saw Smokey as a bright light and positive. I’m not the only one who remembers this, am I?

  13. GaryG Says:

Brian, you know, when they first introduced Juliet, I hated her. But then I realized she was one of the most real persons they introduced to the show. She wanted only the simple thing that most people want in their lives – to be happy. It broke my heart when Sawyer was trying to save her at the end of last season. You could tell that they both really loved each other and I think that’s why Sawyer left the Others. Then there’s Kate, following after him. Sawyer actually offered himself to Kate in his own way in season 4 and Kate rejected him because she wasn’t ready to become a real person.

  14. 1 of the losties Says:

hey does anyone remember the vision that Desmond had about Claire getting off the island in a helicopter with aaron. Didn’t Charlie have to die in order for her to get away, but she never did, she disappeared…does anyone else remember this?

  15. 1 of the losties Says:

what happened there…writer mix up…or yet to happen????

  16. GaryG Says:

I remember Desmond saying that his visions had to do with everything happening exactly the way they were in them for them to come true. I think Desmond changed things when he went down into the Looking Glass so changed that vision when he came back with Charlie’s warning, which caused Claire to go off with Locke. At least that’s how I figured it to be.

  17. SKID Says:

Gary G and 1 of the losties,

OR . . . the series will END with Claire and Aaron reunited and leaving on a copter . . . thus fulfilling Desmond’s “vision”. Lindelof has often said that his favorite series finale is M.A.S.H. which ended with a copter flying off and the words good-bye written in big stones in the dirt. I have heard him reference this at least three times in various interviews leaving me to wonder if as some sort of homage to THAT show that we might also see a copter leaving in the finale (containing Aaron and Claire) but two things make me question that:

    1. Why do what one show has already done?

    2. The reason that GaryG mentioned – that Des indeed changed things when he dove down, etc. making the picture end up “different”.

. . . but I am guessing that at SOME point we will see Aaron and Claire leave the island on a copter, but I guess Aaron has to come TO the island first.

. . . and I am looking for Aaron an Ji Yeon to factor in somehow, and maybe even little Charlie Hume???

AND I think there was something way prophetic in how Ethan said that Aaron looked like he was going to be “a handful.”

Is Aaron like the “chosen one” OR the “anti-christ” of sorts? Someone mentioned that the alias “Joan Hart” that Kate uses was a character in the Omen who realized that Damien was the anti-Christ and then she was killed. I geuss that would qualify you as “a handful.”

  18. GaryG Says:

Here’s another thought – did Danielle play some vital secret role for the island? Because it sure seems as if the island replaced her with Claire right after she died. Christian showed up the very next night to get Claire after Danielle’s death. A mother who’s seprated from her baby and then left alone on the island – that’s just too close.

This also isn’t the first time Kate used the alias Joan Hart, she also used it to pick up some mail at a hotel in the show where her toy airplane boyfriend, Tom, died in. I thought it was kind of funny that Mr. Friendly also had the name Tom and he told Kate that she wasn’t his type.

When the Others gave Walt back, they mentioned that he was more than they bargained for. If you ever seen any of the deleted scenes from season 2, they show all these dead birds on the ground next to a building and I’m guessing Walt was making the birds crash into the windows.

They alluded to Aaron having some kind of abilities too. If you remember when Charlie died, they flash back to Claire and Aaron and Aaron starts crying and Claire says to Sun that she doesn’t know whay he started to cry.

I always thought they’d bring Walt and Aaron together for some mischief.

If you go back to season 1, remember the woman who dies in the operating room when Christian had a some to drink for lunch and Jack comes in to finish up? When Christian is talking to the husband later on, they never come in for a close-up, but the husband looks like Ethan.

I thought last season that we’d see that Claire’s mom and Aaron would be on the same flight with the O6 making her way back to Austraila, but she wasn’t. But then who knows, there were people back there in the back and the O6 were all in First Class and they usually don’t tromp the business and coach passengers past them.
