I think that Isaac’s lines were a HUGE clue to what the “heck” is happening here:

   “There are certain places with great energy, spots on the Earth like the on we are above now. Perhaps this energy is geological, magnetic or perhaps something else. When possible I harness this energy and give it to others.”

Can we agree now that there is something magnetic going on?  Remember the key around Jack’s neck that was pulled towards the wall one of the first times he was down in the hatch?  Remember the compass that wouldn’t work?  Magnets have purported healing powers also.

So could The Others all be sick and they need Walt to be their Isaac?  Walt is “special” and perhaps they believe he can harness this power.  Of course they would never give him back!
