Lockdown
Well, well, well. You want answers you got ‘em, but don’t be surprised that you end up with more questions than you started with. Frustrated? Yes, of course! That is the absolute beauty of this show!
1. Henry. So, Mr. Is He or Isn’t He turns out to be HE IS! Or is he really? If he was a bad Other, why would he stick around for Sayid and Co. to get back? Remember the girl that helped Claire out of the hatch? Seems plausible that there are two (OR MORE) groups of “Others” on this island. But, we know for sure that pseudo white boy Henry got the promise from Locke that he would be his BFF if he helped him with the computer. We can see that Mr. Locke has a slight obsessive personality so I would guess that he is going to make good on his promise to Henry, too.
Thanks to the producers for giving us such a clear copy of this! Click on image to enlarge.
2. OK, so if Henry could have just crawled through the vents to begin with why was Locke so hell bent on getting the heavy door pried open?
3. Is is just me or are the survivors starting to resemble Zeke and his merry band of others? Check out Kate:

4. Helen. Is she part of the con on Locke? Could it be just too convenient she was in his anger management group? Did she or has she shown any signs that her anger is out of control? So why was she there and was she part of Anthony’s long con on Locke? Conveniently she is reading the obit’s “that day” and just happened to remember that Locke’s dad’s name? Seems suspicious. I mean Cooper vs. Locke? Sawyer said that to keep someone in the con they must think it is their idea. So I think that Helen’s part would be to keep Locke in the con. Just this epi she *is* the one that found the obit and got the ball rolling.

5. So then were the men that were after Locke’s dad really bad guys or were they also part of the con? Knowing that Locke had a certain obession with his father, their “quest” to find him would seem appropriate in a con. The bad guys are after him so he needs Locke’s help getting the money (I mean, Jimmy PAIN, come on). Who knows whose money was really in that bank. Could be someone that Anthony was conning and he needed someone anonymous to go and get it. Again, if we remember that the way to con is to convince your subject that it is their idea, Anthony told Locke that he didn’t care if he got the money or not, he was leaving town. Nice timing for Helen to bow out, too, now that the con is over.

6. So was Anthony or wasn’t he the “real” Sawyer? Seems that signs are pointing that way. Plus, we were supposed to see something connecting Locke and Sawyer this episode and I don’t recall any overt revelations.
7. Before this week I don’t remember seeing Locke trying to keep in shape. This week he is on the bike. Hm. Maybe he sees Ana getting into shape and he wants to be in that army (remember her Baywatch-esque jog last week?).

8. There is just too much to say about the map itself. See the post just prior to this one for pictures and a pretty clear run down of the writing on the map. But I do want to speculate about Locke’s next move. There are several moves for him at this point.
a) Try to get the doors back down and get another look.
b) Head out into the wild blue yonder to try and figure it out.
c) Steal Danielle’s maps and head out along with his memory of the hatch mural-map.
d) Tell the other survivors about the map. DOUBTFUL.
e) Take “Henry” and get the heck out of Dodge and try to figure out what is on that island. Locke knows that Henry is not who he says he is, so maybe he will form some type of outcast alliance with this guy. We don’t know what Locke has been up to out in the jungle anyway now that Boone is gone and the cameras don’t follow him out there anymore. Locke did promise Henry that he would protect him, “no matter what.”
9. Did you notice that when Helen comes to the motel the first thing she asks Sawyer is “Are you him?” This seems to be a common question. Remember Desmond asked Locke the same thing…
10. I thought the images of the 1/2 faces in the Locke backstory was interesting. I think that we are being shown that we only know half about who these characters really are. Click on any image to enlarge:

11. So why did the blast doors come down and why the “black lights?” Here is a theory. The countdown can be heard over the speaker then the doors go down. In a “normal” hatch situation wouldn’t the inhabitant go into the computer room so that they could be there to push the button? So, the doors are coming down to seal the area where the food pantry is! Think about it… it coincides with the “food drop,” right? The ultraviolet lights are used to kill any germs on whoever brings the food in, because the tennant is quarantined from the outside. Plus, from the Others POV(meaning, whoever is bringing the food) it serves to protect their identity and the “how” the food gets there (ie. air drop, etc…).

12. But, this does not explain why the map is on the door. We don’t know the author. How about this, during the “incident” whoever was bringing the food got caught down in the hatch. During this time they were frightened. Whoever does the food drop probably is also privy to the whole scam. Maybe they had access to the paint that is also on the mural and considering is was dark in there, they used this to draw a map and think of a way out of there. Then, the incident is over and the author escapes. Next drop comes and someone else sees the map and panics. The reason the map doesn’t show in regular light may be because it was painted over at that point to cover the evidence, but as we have seen in CSI certain fluids can be seen under special lights that you cannot see with the naked eye. (Thanks, Scott, for the painting over idea).
13. We have a food drop and no source. Surely they would have heard a plane flying overhead. Could a plane fly so high that it couldn’t be heard and still drop this food with such accuracy (so close to the hatch)? This could go along with my underground theory. Maybe there is some kind of trap door or tunnel that they food is brought out from under. Ideas?
14. I had been speculating in Season One about a time loop. However, I don’t subscribe to the theory anymore considering the writers have said everything can be explained in “reality.” So I think that the conversation between Jack and Hurley was a shout out to the viewers, much like when Locke watched Orientation and wanted to watch it again. Conversation went something like Hurley told Jack that he didn’t know where Ana was going because no one tells him anything and that if he were “in the loop” he could be more helpful. Jack responds that “there is no loop.”
15. There is speculation that you can see the Dharma symbol on the bottom of the plane that flies over Locke. I have screen capped the plane and yes, it’s Oceanic Air but no, I cannot see a symbol.

16. Back to the hatch. How is it that Henry can rememeber the sequence of numbers so easily? Then, I want to know where he goes. Here is what happens.
a. Henry crawls through vents to computer room to press the buttons.

Then, we assume Henry presses the buttons because the doors go up. Locke first pulls away from the door back into the room where the armory, etc… is. Then he crawls forward into the computer room where Henry is supposed to be. He yells for Henry but no answer. Then, Henry comes up from behind Locke. Remember, behind Locke is the room where the armory is, not the computer room where Henry should have been if he had pressed the buttons.
Check it out, he is behind Locke. Locke is looking into the computer room:

17. Poker. I think that for some reason Sawyer is letting Jack win. Obviously, the guns were on Saywer’s mind and if Jack had wanted them I think that suddenly Sawyer would be winning. For some reason, Sawyer wants Jack to think that he is either vunerable at cards or is building up Jack’s ego. Not sure why yet but I think that time will certainly tell. Don’t they golf anymore?

18. I loved Kate’s line about the ruler. HAHA!
19. We should keep in mind that Locke’s dad had $700,000 in is con. I don’t see a direct coorelation to anything right now, but it may serve as a connection in later episodes.
20. Next week: Dave. See my Upcoming Episodes page for pix and summary. It looks like “Dave” makes an appearance on the island and Hurley chases him much like Jack did with his dad back in Season One. Plus, it looks like Dave leads Hurley to the cliff, again, just like Jack and his dad.
21. Notice the floor in the armory. I am thinking that this could potentially be some type of escape door or entry. Sayid and Jack were under this hatch at one point so we know that there is definitely space underneath the hatch.

22. What are the noises coming out the speakers? I heard what sounded first like a woman either saying “Locke” or “John.” Then there is feedback, music, and definitely a countdown. Almost like when you are tuning in the radio at home.

23. So, finally, what were the 5 events that would change the island forever (this is what ABC was touting in last weeks previews). Possibilities:
a. Henry is an Other.
b. The food drop.
c. The Locke map.
d. The timer went to zero.
e. The real Henry Gale. His crash site and burial ground.
f. The poker game. Maybe we don’t know the implication of this yet.
g. The doors closing. Locke cannot “hide” this from the other survivors.
Thoughts?

Actually, Locke could hide the map from the other survivors, as Henry the other, is likely to be killed. Locke is the only one who knows that the timer was going down and that the lights changed and that there was a lockdown. I’d say that he could very well, deny “Henry” protection and keep his superiority (a deep issue with him).
