Initial Thoughts: Follow the Leader
OK, so who is the leader? Looks like we’re back to Jack and Locke leading the packs. Will be veeeery interesting when they hit the “present” to see who does what when new and improved Jack meets up with new and improved Locke.
1. Too much dead Dan for me tonight. It’s bad enough they killed him, I didn’t need multiple dead body shots.
2. OK, so I may lose people here but I want Kate gone. I know why they keep her … because she’s the wrinkle in the plan (always, ugh she drives me crazy) but wow, Sawyer had a real shot at happiness. Come on Darlton, you can’t just give *someone* happiness on this show? I could totally see Sawyer and Juliet running off and making a nice life for themselves. Geesh, even in real life once in a while a guy can catch a break. Guess the island isn’t done with him.
3. I know why Locke has to kill Jacob. Locke now believes that he had to be *killed* in order to be set free. Jacob asked Locke to help him. Locke’s way to help Jacob is to *kill him* in order to set Jacob free as well. How will he do it, who know exactly but I have a feeling he needs the whole gang there in order to make it happen. I really doubt that Locke wanted everyone to meet Jacob. He needs their help and couldn’t just come out and ask them now could he.
4. I love it, 30 years later and Locke is back on the beach carrying around a dead boar just like he started at the beginning of this show. The irony of them on the beach didn’t escape me.
5. So Richard is an adviser of sorts. Adviser to who exactly? I think that Richard plays a similar role that Abbadon played in that he is there to help people get to where they need to go. Richard helps them stay on course or on the right “record” if you will.
6. Did you catch Ben at the end tell Richard that he “TRIED” to kill Locke? Either Ben is denying the truth (which why would he to Richard) or that sneaky little you-know-what is playing Locke right to where he wants him to go. Not sure where that is yet but remember dear friends that Mr Ben Linus *always* has a plan.
7. Richard thinks that he saw Jack and the others die back in 1977. I’m holding on to the idea that someone (Juliet) will somehow move them forward in time just at the right second before the bomb goes off. So of course Richard thinks that they die.
8. Compass points them North. Again with the North.
9. BRILLIANT writing getting Richard back to the plane right at the exact second that Locke would flash with his injured leg. I am in awe tonight, ok so most nights, but completely 100% in awe of the writing on this show. To think that scene through from these various angles took some serious brain power. Bravo Paul Zbyszewski & Elizabeth Sarnoff. Bravo to the writers who also led up to this epi.
10. Oh no not again. Sawyer getting beat up. He’s totally going to get back at Radzinsky, I’m sure of it.
11. And hello, remember in Season One that Sawyer gets beat up by a “genuine Iraqi Soldier.” He can surely handle a few blogs from a pasty guy living on an island.
12. Ok, and here’s another flash back. Sawyer would have completely left Hurley behind just a few short seasons ago. Now Hurley says that they can’t leave him because Sawyer would never leave them behind. Oh really?
13. Best line of the night. Pierre/Marvin comes in the jungle questioning Hurley, Miles and Jin about where they are going and who they are. Hurley says, “But we asked you first.” LOLs
14. So Locke sends Richard over to help “past” Locke and his injured leg. Locke knows he has to convince his “past” self to die and come back to the island. He also knows that his past self needs some medical attention. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could watch an event in your life and send one of your buddies to help you and convince you to do the right thing? Another variable perhaps?
15. Richard comes out from the pond into the tunnel and has fire. Where did it come from?
16. OMG, get Kate away from Sawyer. And how many times must Kate come trying to save the day and ends up muddying the waters instead? She has turned into Jack. Always trying to fix things and sometimes things don’t need fixing!
17. Locke gave his word to Sun that he would help to unite her with Jin and I think he will. It may be on his terms and on his time but I do think he’ll help.
18. Yeah, Sayid is back! He always makes a dramatic entrance. I guess they’re paying him enough they better bring him back on screen. Plus he’s such a bad a$$ Jack will probably need him to help with the bomb.
19. I’m curious where Sawyer drew the map to. I’m thinking that it’s somewhere that will either hurt or kill Radzinsky.

Well, it seems from what Locke told Ben, I’ve been correct all along that Ben has never actually spoken to Jacob. It makes me actually wonder if there really is a Jacob. Locke is going to go “kill” Jacob, but maybe Jacob is actually only a sham, a fake, and to “kill” such a lie is to bring it out into the open for everyone to see that it’s a lie, which could be why he is bringing all of the Others with him. Then he can say to them all, look, there is no Jacob. Of course, there could be a Jacob and Locke is actually going there to kill him. That same theme where the son kills the father figure type thing and takes his place that we’ve seen before. Richard’s comment to Ben was a bit strange how Locke was going to be trouble. I am not sure if we’re dealing with the same Ben after his experience with smokey and with what Alex told him that he had to follow Locke. Richard may be assuming that it’s the same Ben.
Still, I kind of think there is a Jacob since when Ben brought Locke to the cabin that first time, Locke heard Jacob ask for help. I mentioned this before too that I thought that Locke would ultimately take Jacob’s place and that Jack would end up as the leader of the Others. Jack has certainly come to accept Locke’s views on things.
I’ve been thinking about Richard as an adviser and this shows constant reference to biblical ideas. Angels and demons often took form to be “advisers to mortal man. I wonder which one Richard would be.
I’ll tell you, I’d certainly want to have someone who could really understand Dan’s notes and math to go over it all first before actually doing it to see if it is actually attempting to do what it is that Dan told them. Dan’s been off his rocker ever since Charlotte died and I have a feeling that Charlotte is Dan’s main motivation. Of course, the whole thing might be one of those killing two birds with one stone…or nuke as in this case.
Poor Sawyer, going off on the sub with Juliet planning to start a life with her and who shows up to ruin it all…again! Kate! I laughed at his talking about betting on the ‘78 Super Bowl and investing in Microsoft…lol.
Radzinsky seems to have more power then what we thought. It seems that in certain situations, he takes power over both Horace and Chang.
Well, I’m definitely excited about next weeks show. Will we finally see Jacob? Or find out that there’s no Jacob? Will the blow the bomb? And what will happen? I’m sure they’re going to leave us with something stunning to think about until next season, like when the island disappeared last season. The only sad part is, is that next season is the last.

Loved this episode and I am now on the side of Juliet – Kate is the worst kind of third wheel. I wanted them to be happy too…then she shows up ready to lay on the bomb talk.
I was surprised by Locke’s plan. I’ve wondered if Jacob was just a way to keep the people in line – a Wizard of Oz figure. What did Richard want to tell Locke before he organized the coup?
Why was Daniel not buried? Curious. Is Daniel Jacob? Is Locke Jacob? I think it will end with us finally seeing Jacob, and it will be a big shock…or they will open the box from the plane people and it will be another dead body or the bomb.

On #6. I don’t think that that’s what Ben was doing. I don’t think he’s tricking anybody. I knwo that he’s Ben Linus but i just don’t. After his encounter with smokey and Alex i just don’t think so. If he was trying to trick them then he, imo, would be trying to not follow Locke but he’s supposed to. I think when he said that he tried to kill him that he meant he tried to kill him but he came to life. He seemed genuinely shocked to wake up and see Locke sitting there alive. i think he meant to kill him just so it would be like the 815 crash with a dead person but had no idea he would come back to life.

Ok, so when does Eloise give birth to Daniel (i.e. how old is Daniel in the present, less than 30)? It was interesting to watch Charles touch Eloise’s stomach while they were discussing next steps a the camp – does that mean she could be in the beginning stages of pregnacy?
Was awesome to see Sayid again. I got a sense he had an agenda of his own when he was in the tunnels – he seemed way to supportive once getting in there versus Jack not being sure if he would even come a few minutes earlier. A few moment later he questions Jack’s support for Eloise
BTW, horrible special effects with the submarine leaving. Also, how big is that submarine – didn’t seem big enough to hold all those people – when Kate was brought on the island the submarine seemed to be very small…
Absolutely confused about Jacob. I’ve had the feeling that he wasn’t real, but it would seem like Richard would have put up a bigger fight when Locke ordered they go see him.

Lost is a show about irony and coincidence, and how the more ironic things are, the less coincidental they are than what they may initially appear to be. that’s the underlying premise, over which things like destiny, fate, faith vs. science, redemption, vengeance, parental issues, and the choices we make in life are tossed around like so much salad. from that standpoint, this episode was awesome in its brilliance. imagine your future self telling your past self something, and the luxury of watching it happen. how interesting is that? i wanted more of richard’s backstory, and a less anticlimactic ending–this episode peaked about 10 minutes too early–but i’ll settle for what we got. how about that moment just before Sawyer enters the sub. did anyone else think he was going to do something foolhardy? he surely would have in seasons 1-4, but he didnt last night. the character development on this show is far above par for network TV. also good to have a bit more action after the overly-thinky episodes preceding this. loved the scene with Dr. Chang, Miles, Hurley and Jin too. “ok, we’re from the future.” LOL.

Sorry – meant when JULIET was brought on the island (not Kate)

Radzinsky’s dad-
I thought the same thing about Sawyer doing something stupid once Juliet was in the sub. I’m kinda glad he didnt thought because that adds a whole new thing to the storhy line with Kate being put on the sub too.

One thing this show has been absolutely genius about is how, with almost agonizing slowness, they have shown that somehow the things going on have to do with some ancient civilization that lived on the island thousands of years ago. It all started in season two showing the four toed statue foot and the writing on the timer of the hatch. They let us dwell on that, wondering what the heck was that foot until season 4 when we see the donkey wheel. Though they give us a taste in season 3 when Ben mysteriously mentions moving his people to the Temple. Now, this season we’re seeing more and more evidence of this anchient civilization and some connection (like the Others speaking Latin). What we thought was the temple, is actually the wall around it according to Ben. We’ve seen the tunnels under it when Ben and Locke went down inside and this show Jack went down into the tunnels with Richard and Ellie to get the nuke. Here’s a question, does anyone remember the old Planet of the Apes movies? The second one of those movies ends with Taylor finding this race of humans who are worshiping a missile (a doomsday device). They had it on an altar. When Jack and them come to the nuke, seeing where it was sitting, it kind of reminded me of that movie. Did anyone else make that same connection? I think they’re really building up to something big. If Jacob is anywhere, I think he’s going to be hidden somewhere at the temple. I’m betting the place is huge and also distant if we couldn’t see it on the other side of that wall.

Could someone help me please? Ben, Locke, and Sun are NOT time traveling and are supposedly in 2007 when they meet up with Richard on the beach. How is it that Locke can take Ben and Richard to a spot back in time to witness the bullet removal scene? Since they are not time traveling how is it possible for the three of them to witness something that happed in the past?
May 8th, 2009 at 2:49 am
Hey JHT: The solution is that the ones time traveling ended up in 2007 at that point. Remember when Sawyer and team find the canoes with the Ajira Airline water bottle in it at their old camp on the beach? That bottle is from the plane Jack and team came back to the island on. Then they take one of the canoes and end up with the other one chasing them and firing at them. I’m assuming that’s going to be Ilana and team in that other canoe and we’ll find out about it here soon. Then they time shift again and end up in a storm. So while Sawyer and team experienced that, Locke experienced Richard coming to talk to him and giving him the compass. According to Locke in this show, the island told him where and when to go to meet himself so he could have Richard talk to him and patch up his leg. It also seems that we’re learning that Ben has been the leader all this time under false pretenses if what Locke has been saying is true – that the island never has talked to Ben and if he never has talked to Jacob. If that’s so, then Widmore may be correct in saying that Ben stole the island from him and that the island never belonged to Ben. Richard actually says something to the effect in season 4 when he talks to Locke telling them that Ben has been doing all this meaningless research in why women die when they’re pregnant and they’re looking for someone to show them they’re there for more important reasons.
