Initial Thoughts: Ji Yeon

I have to start by saying I hated the ending. I usually hate happy-sappy endings but I wanted to see the excited dad come to see the new baby! I suspected that Jin might die but I guess now that I saw this week I was really bummed. How sad and another tear jerker!

1. Flash forward and flash back in the same episode. *That* was genius.

2. Some bad things are happening on the freighter. Regina’s book is upside down and she doesn’t even realize it? This put me in mind of things that are backwards on the island (whispers, Little Dipper). Then she kills herself. Frank says that they are having a “little problem” in the kitchen and what was up with the banging? Oh yeah, and the blood in Sayid and Desmond’s new cabin.

3. I had a couple of moments in the show tonight and I found myself saying, “I can’t believe that I didn’t think of that!” One was questioning where they came up with all those dead bodies to stage the wreckage. The other was that Ben staged it. Usually I’m wondering what took them so long to ask questions but tonight I was wondering why I wasn’t the one asking them.

4. Lots of three’s in tonight’s episode. Sayid and Desmond left three days ago. Sun has three weeks to get off the island.

5. I loved that Sun just flat out asked Daniel if they were going to rescue them. I was thinking, “Finally, someone just asks and waits for a straight answer.” Maybe Daniel didn’t answer straight, but Sun could read him loud and clear.

6. I thought that maybe Juliet had indeed found a cure for whatever was killing the pregnant women on the island but that Ben was sabotaging her work to keep her there. Now, seeing that Sun lives through her pregnancy and childbirth I’m even more convinced. Yes, I know she got off the island but seeing what’s happening to people who aren’t on the island but are under it’s influence (the freighter crew) I think that Ben didn’t want Juliet to succeed.

7. I was worried for Sun when the strange doctor came into the room that he was going to be a bad guy since she didn’t know that her regular doctor wasn’t going to be around. I kept thinking of creepy eyed man and wondering if the doctor was someone from his group.

8. Jin only understands English in small pieces, but he understood Juliet just fine when she explained Sun’s affair. Hmmm. Bad writing or more going on?

9. Are Jin and Bernard fishing off of Karl’s boat? And why was Bernard giving Jin advice to reel in the fish when Jin is the son of a fisherman.
10. Frank was running an errand with the helicopter? Very interesting. No Walmart nearby so I wonder what they’ve got him up to?
11. I’m interested to know what data is on the black box recorder. Obvioulsy it had info that clued them in that there were survivors but Widmore and his people had this info and chose not to disclose to the families that thought that their loved ones were dead. I guess they couldn’t if they wanted to keep the island all to himself. And I guess there goes Ben’s theory that Widmore wants to exploit the island and turn it into some sort of healing theme park. And I loved that the black box was red.

12. So Widmore wants them to move the boat to safer waters but Michael/Kevin is sabotaging the equipment. Why does Widmore want them to move? Why is Michael keeping the boat there? Walt must not be in the boat or Ben wants them to stay or I doubt he would care to stay by the island any longer than he has to.

13. Sun’s birth scene was the most unrealistic portrayal I have ever seen. I was even thinking she might be dreaming it because it was just that bad. Imagine if having a baby was really that easy. And there wasn’t an umbilical cord to cut.
14. Sayid says to Ray, “But the ship isn’t moving” and Ray responds, “If you say so.” Huh?

15. My daughter made a good point - they were showing (in our market) Carnival Cruise commercials. Happy people looking out to the islands and riding horses on the beach. Yeah, great idea during a show about people who crash landed and are now stuck on an island and some of their people are on a boat with all sorts of creepy people.

16. The date on the tombstone was 2004 so my guess is Jin dies saving Sun and the baby.

17. Anyone surprised to see Michael? At least he got his hair cut.

    No surprise seeing Michael, no.

The date on the grave stone was 9/22/04, which means the world-at-large is being lead to believe that he died in the crash (and it was probably the Paiks or Kwons that erected the stone, prior to the O6 being rescued). Either he died on the island in whatever catastrophe lead to Claire’s presumed death, or he’s still alive. Nothing in what Sun said is proof that he actually died; maybe she just misses him because he’s stuck on the island. I really hope it’s the latter because I love Jin and this episode was heartbreaking.

Is it me, or was the captain kind of hot? Hehe.

  2. Foffman Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Jin isn’t dead. I think there was WAY too much left unsaid in that episode, especially at the end, to be sure that Jin dies in the near future.

And I love Hurley. He makes every scene awesome.

  3. teresa Says:

Jin said that he understand English better than he speaks it when he was talking to Jact about the cereal.

Jin is not dead - they showed him telling the nurse he had only been married two months and this was when he showed up at a hospital bringing a Panda to the Ambassador and after Suns baby had been born - for some reason either he or someone wants Sun to think he is dead. Maybe he thinks she is dead to, or maybe he is working with Sayid and Ben. Or maybe I just misinterpreted the whole thing? I suppose the scenes with Jin buying the Panda etc could have been in Sun’s mind if she blacked out?
She said her pregnancy was hard so we have to assume that we didn’t actually see the who ordeal which is why it would appear to have been easy.
I hope they give us more answers soon - there are starting to be too many details to keep up with!

  4. Scott Cramer Says:

I liked this epi and I don’t usually like the Sun/Jin ones that much. VERY sad at the end. Was trying to catch the dates on the tombstone and put into the timeline but I don’t have the dates in my head down that well - so of course I came here! I don’t think Jin is dead. For the sake of the lie the Oceanic 6 are telling about everyone else being dead and they are the only survivors, I think they are just keeping up appearances. We have Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, and AARON. Oceanic 6. I was thinking Jin and didn’t factor Baby Aaron into the equation (kind of like seating at a retaurant, heh).

The brought back Michael in a way I didn’t expect. I guess I was expecting him to appear on the island or something - don’t know why I was thinking that way. I’m more excited about his reappearance than I thought I would be. So, why would he leave Walt to be Ben’s spy? Sabotaging the ship… does he want to get people off the island? Or is his mission to slowly destroy them all so they can’t get Ben and can’t get anyone off the island? I’ll bet Sayid would like to have him alone in a room with some pliers right about now. ;-)

Very fun this season… with the exception of last week which was okay but a little… well, filler episode, to me.

#3 - Ben staging the fake crash. Interesting. Who the hell is this guy? Maybe he’s got the time travel thing down. That would make him quite a dangerous little fellow. Big business would want this… can you imagine playing the stock market? Or sabotaging your competition? Overthrowing governments… Or just getting the good ho-hos from when we were kids? Oh, the possibilities!

Here is a wacky addition to Ben staging the crash site and a thought about where all the bodies came from. They said all the passengers had been found. Now… they would have wanted to identify the bodies so it’s not like just ANY dead bodies would do. How do you make over 300 dead bodies get identified as over 300 people that they obviously aren’t?

    a) You put the con in at the level of the medical examiners and fake all the results and ditch the bodies or make them physically unrecognizable. Basically fake the paper results and the reporting.

    b) You have to dummy up over 300 dead bodies with false dental and false faces (what would be left of them) and prints and belongings like rings and watches and plastic credit cards and the like.

    c) Okay, this one is nuts and I don’t even really buy it, but it was a random musing from my brain. You use the actual bodies. If time travel is involved in any way, shape, form, then I can get really wacky with explanations. Daniel in the epi with Desmond in the past back at college told Desmond that what they did in the past did NOT affect the future. So… go back into the past and grab all the passengers and bring them to the future and kill them and put them in the fake crash site. Of course, they also insinuated that the time travel is mental… the mind moving back and forth. Don’t know how to counter that one yet. And… it would be a mammoth undertaking to stage 300 time-abductions. Either Ben has help… and a massive staging area for this. Or, if you are the master of time, I suppose it wouldn’t matter how big the undertaking was since time is no longer relevant. Of course, why would he need Sayid killing people for him? Hmm… Random musings.

#5 - Love Daniel. Great character.

#6 - CHILLING thought. Ben WOULD definitely kill the pregnant women and children to keep Juliet on the island. Brrr… cold blooded little psyco-path isn’t he. Or is that socio-path? Either way. Brr!

#8 - They foreshadowed earlier that Jin understands English better than he speaks it… paving the way for us believing that he understood what Juliet was telling him. Or we could center on the fact that he had his suspicions and hearing the word “affair” might have been all it took. Either way, I vote bad writing.

#10 - He went to get ho-hos. The good ones. Foil wrapped. From the 70’s. I’m hungry.

#11 - Widmore has the black box from flight 815 and the manifest (or whatever they called it) from the Black Rock. Basically the same thing from different eras. Funny. Wonder what else he has?

#13 - Glad you think so too. I let them go on this one for the sake of it’s an hour show and they have too much to cram in to make everything perfect. Still… it could have been a LITTLE more realistic.

“The medicine makes natural childbirth difficult”
Sun must be on some meds because of her pregnancy and time on the island. What meds? Are they making her hullicinate?

I’ve had babies. I always knew what was going on. You don’t forget things that big while you are in labor.

    or

Maybe Sun is the coma phase that Juliet talked about and none of it really happened…

  6. R Says:

Super Gitsie, I commend you for nailing the flash-forward/flash-back duality of this episode from the door. The other review guy totally missed it. This is not a competition of course, we all win with lost, but you will be my first web stop from now on! Go on girl.

I did LOVE this episode though. Last week’s Other Woman was not my favorite, but I thought they got back on point this week.

And another ep next week? I thought we had hit the break already? Good news!

  7. Connor Says:

Anyone got a screen of the TV show that was on at sun’s before hurley turned up?

  8. Jenny Says:

Wasn’t that Nikki (aka Barbie) on Sun’s TV right before she turned it off?

  9. Hugo Hurley Says:

GG - wow !! you hit this right on the head (a couple very minor details differ) !! you are getting scary good ..

“Next week; “Meet Kevin Johnson.” Here is how I envision it… Desmond and Sayid go to meet the captain. While chatting in walks Michael and the captain says, “Meet Kevin Johnson.” Do they pretend not to know Michael at this point to go along with the charade?”

  10. sr Says:

watch the characters on the grave, there are two birth dates, and only one death date(which is definitely jin’s). it’s the grave for the couple, if it’s done by the people in the “real” world, there must be two death dates. so i think jin is already dead.

is there any chance that the cleaner on the ship is walt, not micheal? lock said he is older and bigger when he saw walt again, he may now be grown up because of the effect caused by the island

  11. Gitsie Girl Says:

The episode is not quit *ahem* ready to screencap yet so I’m going to go ahead and respond to some comments. Thanks to all for so many excellent comments. Again, this is why I love this show - get those neurons firing!

Heather, I didn’t catch the day, just the year. Will need to screen cap that one, but I don’t read Korean so it might not matter anyway.

Scott, you’re giving me a run for my money here. Agreed on the id’ing of the bodies. I think maybe Frank’s flash back even spoke to that when he knew the pilot wasn’t the same guy just because of the wedding ring thingy. There is not way in a tragedy this large they wouldn’t have to id the bodies. Unless they want us to think they would have id’d them solely on where they were seated. Note to self; never change seats with someone on a plane.

Hurleys Honey; Creepy Eyed Man’s group could certainly be messing with her. Or Ben for that matter since we know he is out and about on the mainland. Surely he would want to know if Sun gives birth back home.

R, thanks so much for remembering!

Conner & Jenny- will screen cap as soon as I can.

Hugo Hurley; Thanks for the compliment, would love to hear your thoughts on the show!

sr; I’m still leaning towards dead Jin, but island Jin is also possible. Ugh. As far as Walt, I’m thinking he’s some sort of pawn to get Michael to do what Ben wants. But THAT would be a twist if it were Walt!

  12. Foffman Says:

I’m thinking Walt is maybe on the ship. And maybe he’s the one who sabotaged the ship’s system. We’ve already seen that he burned down their first attempt at a raft. And if he wasn’t on the ship, why would Michael even be there? However, I’ve noticed that that ship is not very big at all, so where could he be? Unless he’s also got the time travel thing figured out, which would explain how he appeared to Locke, but I don’t even want to go there…

  13. Rach K Says:

Just a few thoughts. Would the black box be from the actual 815 or the fake 815 under water? If it’s the real one, then ‘they’ wouldn’t want anyone to find it, if it’s the one from the plane they found, then why would it not have gone to the authorities when they found the plane and the bodies? Surely the families would want to know what happened! My next thought is the bodies. Where do you get 300 bodies from? Well, where do you get two bunnies with the same number?!

  14. sr Says:

i review the 6th, the date “now” is end of december, and the death date on the grave is august, seems to be the crash date, so it’s obvious that it’s the grave done by the people in “real” world

but how can it be two name on the grave when the other one has only the birthdate?(wish i can read the characters korean)
