Season Premiere

Apparently some of the critics out there have been privy to the first two episodes of Season Five (ugh, I’m so jealous!) and the reviews are great. If you have read spoilers or know what’s going to happen, please comment on my spoiler page. For the rest of us, we’ll just enjoy the teases…

Watching the first two hours of Lost season 5, I was reminded of the times when I truly loved this show. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Lost, growing frustrated when it seems to be going nowhere and being fascinated when it’s burning on all cylinders. Based on these first two episodes, Lost is back to “Oh My Effing God!” status.

There will be no spoilers here, because any true Lost fan should avoid spoilers like the plague. I have no problem learning what an episode is generally about or who will be appearing in the guest cast, but knowing the major secrets before they air is like buying a Christmas present for yourself – it ruins the surprise.

What I can say is that these first two hours, “Because You Left” and “The Lie,” both airing January 21 at 9pm, are vintage Lost, full of some unbelievable twists and a whole lot of groundwork for the season to come.

Like the last three seasons, the opening scene itself will leave your mouth wide open and you’ll probably forget to close it for a few minutes. The shocking part isn’t just what happens, but who, where, why, when and how.

The show returns not only with a vengeance, but with a purpose. We know the Oceanic 6 have to go back, which nicely addresses a serious concern fans often have: where is the show going? Now we have a goal, but we also learn in this premiere that there are some strings attached. We start to understand more about why they need to go back and how, but like every great episode of Lost, those answers only leave fans with more questions.

And if the opening scene doesn’t drop your jaw, the final scene will. Casual Lost fans won’t be impressed, but if you’ve followed and know every episode by heart, you will be positively floored, confused, and intrigued by what is said, who says it, and to whom they say it.

If I’m being interminably vague, I apologize. Over the next three weeks leading up to the premiere, I’ll have plenty of clues and hints about what you can expect to see. But rest assured, nearly all of the questions you had from the end of last season will be answered as these two hours cover everything.

We learn what happened to the island after Ben made it vanish and what happened to the inhabitants, as well as the people on the Zodiac between the island and the freighter. We see what’s going on with the Oceanic 6 and learn why they do or do not want to go back.

Season 5 of Lost is like watching a totally different show. The basic format and structure is a little different, the goal and storyline is a bit clearer, and all of the actors are actually used. This is not a case where the premiere only focuses on a small group of people, we get to see all of the main stars, several beloved recurring characters, and quite a few faces you might not expect to see.

Well, I definitely think we’ll see Locke once again running around the island like nothing has happened to him, just like Christian. It always makes me wonder about the people they buried. Remember, Christan’s body wasn’t inside the casket when Jack opened it and Mr. Echo’s brother’s body also disappeared from inside the plane. I believe that’s why they have to bring Locke’s body back with them. I also expect we’re going to see Walt return to the island once again. Back in season 1, Walt wanted to stay on the island, up until he touched Locke’s arm and told him not to open the hatch. Then when Michael said, we can stay on the island, Walt told him, no, we have to leave. I always wondered if Walt saw his father killing Libby and Anna Lucia, but season 4 made me question that since it’s supposidly what made Walt move in with his grandmother. Then of course, they never do say if that’s what it was. I’m also expecting well see Desmond back on the island as well, though i’m not sure about Penny since Penny has to avoid Ben who’s now out to kill her. I’m wondering if Jin will be on this island. But the thing is, Jin was on the ship when it blew up. The helicopter was on it’s way back to the island, so between the island and the ship when the island “moved” and it didn’t move along with the island. So it’d make sense that anyone on the ship wouldn’t have moved with the island since they were further from the island than the helicopter. But then, maybe it’s something the writers didn’t think about at the time or who knows. It wouldn’t be the first thing they kind of goofed on. Like in season 1 when Claire finds out about being pregnant, Claire and her boyfriend talk about her mother as if she’s well and awake, worrying what she’ll say when she finds out and not as if she’s in a comma as she is in season 3 (?) i believe. But, I don’t sweat the small stuff, the show is too cool and I love all the mystery. Most shows on TV just lead you all the way through by the hand as if the viewers all have an IQ of 70.

I saw a preview last night that I hadn’t seen before. It looks like Desmond and Penny have a baby. Sorry if that’s old news…

Ya, I saw that too. It was kind of fast and hard to tell. Also, I didn’t realize that one of the guys on Penny’s boat was one of the guys that was at the ice station in the season 2 final episode. I wonder if they’re introducing a new main character. Here’s something I’ve been thinking about – was Christian (Jack’s dad) on the island sometime in the past? Maybe a member of DHARMA before the purge? Well, just a thought.
