3 X 20: The Man Behind The Curtain

Let’s get right to it…

1. Yes, there *is* a man in the chair. I’m sure the man looks like Jesus on purpose, but herrrrreeeeeee’s JACOB!
jacob3.jpg jacob2.jpg jacob1.jpg jacob4.bmp Click any image to enlarge

2. I still think that my theory about Ben can fit into the fact that there is someone there. Ben is obviously special, why else would the Others follow him? Did Ben trap Jacob as a threat to the Others of what his powers are? But if you watch this scene, Ben says, “You’ve had your fun,” then is supposedly pushed by Jacob. Flash to this guy sitting there calmly. Again, I don’t think that the book Carrie was put in the show by accident, I think it’s a clue. Ben is moving all this stuff around the room with his mind to make it look like Jacob has gone mad. Why? To scare Locke from coming back there of course! Jacob asks Locke to help him. Maybe Ben can’t actually hear Jacob. Maybe he brought Locke there to see if he could, knowing the *connection* that Locke has with the island. Now that Ben knows that Locke can hear Jacob he must get rid of him or Jacob really could tell him all the secrets of the island! Ben is also jealous of this power (just like the wheelchair).

3. So how to you explain some guy who can go in and out of vision or become invisible? Everything can supposedly be explained, right? Is is something to do with the magnetic force of the island, the same force that kills fetuses and heals the wounded?

4. Is Jacob trapped in the hut by some type of magic or compound? Locke sees a barrier around the cabin and picks it up to examine it. Have you ever poured red pepper to keep out the ants? Maybe it keeps Jacob in or someone else out.
line.jpg Ben steps over carefully

line2.jpg line3.jpg line4.jpg

5. My Scott mentioned the whispers in the jungle. What if there are other Others who are trapped in some type of bodiless form and that is who is making the whispers. Maybe for some reason Jacob is the special one and that is why Ben has trapped him. Maybe the *whisper* Others want to know if they can trust the survivors or if they will help them. Maybe who ever is whispering is meant to stay out of the hut because they could help Jacob.

6. Maybe Ben wanted Walt because he thought he could talk to Jacob.

7. Why no technology in the hut? I’m thinking that Jacob could derive some energy from the electricity. Again, I think it all ties into the electromagnetic force on this island. Is it Jacob that goes crazy when Locke turns on the flashlight or is it Ben scaring Locke out of there before Jacob can extract some of the energy?

8. So Ben was born in Portland. Or “Not in Portland” as the prior episode was titled. Irony? Or does Ben hate Portland because of his past and that is why they lie and say they are taking them there (Juliet, namely).

9. It’s time for Tom to get a flashback episode.
tom.jpg Click to enlarge

10. So are we supposed to be seeing parallels between Locke & Ben and the Locke & Boone relationships? Except the roles are reversed. Boone had to let go of Shannon to be free. Locke killed his dad. Boone went with Locke to find out his secrets. Helped him on his vision quest. It’s a much more twisted relationship, but I can see some similarities.

11. Gruesome!
lockecarrydad.jpg Click to enlarge

12. Looks like they were also administering immunizations *way back when.* However, anyone know when these types of injection gadgets came about? Seems pretty high tech for the time.
immunization.jpg Click to enlarge

13. Here is a link to an article that speculates Annie is Kate.

14. This is the nurse that I thought could be a young Mrs. Klugh.
nurse.jpg Click to enlarge

15. So they pylons weren’t set to a lethal level. I’m telling you, this guy is going to save Locke. He is the last Dharma survivor and he knows what Ben and the Others did to his people. I mean the guy still wears his old work suit because of his loyalty. He’s probably been biding his time until he got his revenge for his people. Much like Ben had to be patient to get what he wanted.
mikhail.jpg Click to enlarge

16. So yes, I think that there were a few Dharma survivors in the various hatches. I think that they came back or were invaded and found out what had happened. So let’s assume that they have a choice, join them or reverse roles and *they* have to go live in the jungle like the hostiles. Some join, like Mikhail, some go into the jungle and become the *other* Others that we are yet to meet. Remember the bare feet walking through the jungle that Jin and Eko saw? Those that stayed probably all died off except Mikhail and I would guess that he hasn’t been very happy with this arrangement. It seems when Locke beats the tar out of him there is no love loss with the Others either.

17. I can’t wait to see Alex and Danielle together. They like to just show up and then disappear don’t they? I assume that she got this gun from when Kate & Co. were at the compound?
alex.jpg Click to enlarge

18. Back when Ben was a kid, what must the hostiles be doing when they invade the camp? It looks like they are about to get a volcanic eruption, but no, it’s *just the hostiles.* Do they come from underground? The whole room is shaking which makes us think that there is about to be an eruption, since they are taking about the volcano. Later Ben’s dad says that there is a huge explosion then the siren and a shoot out. Remember what we see right before smokey appears? The huge explosion from underground.

19. Jack and Juliet take off right after they find out about Naomi. “Lucy, you have some ’splaining to do!”

20. I was just watching the episode back and Ben is telling Locke that Jacob is going to be very angry that they are coming to see him. He is totally conning Locke. Reverse psychology. He wants Locke to go. He wants to know if Locke will hear him. Such a con. “This is not a man you go and see. This is a man who summons you.”

21. I almost felt sorry for Ben. His dad was such a jerk. Then I thought, I bet this kid would fit the profile of a school shooter. Yeah, then he grew up and killed his dad and his community. So I guess I was right.

22. There are whispers for sure when Ben gets upset and runs out of the house and comes upon the sonic fence. Then his mom appears. But they so want Ben, these original hostiles. But it isn’t time. Were they thinking they would wait until he was older, but Ben changes that plan for them when he gets out of the fence. They have to know, however, that he would follow his mom out of there. They must have known that he was special.

23. When Jack walks up and hears Juliet’s tape why is he so angry? Why is he waiting until a day and a half before the invasion to talk to the survivors? Why is it Jack’s decision how to handle them? Why wouldn’t he empower the whole camp to get ready, especially Sayid, an ex soldier? There is still more going on. Then the stupid show doesn’t go back to them this episode. My only true complaint this week.

24. Ben hates bunnies.

25. More whispers when Ben runs out of the fence and into the jungle.

26. Harry Potter? (lol)

27. The painting in Jacob’s cabin looks like the Shaggy DA. But, since he’s probably never seen that movie, we can assume it’s something else. It is hard to make out much in the picture but see what you think:

29. They show this eye in the middle of the Jacob freak out scene. I don’t think it’s Locke’s or Ben’s. Jacob?
eye.jpg eye2.jpg eye3.jpg Click to enlarge

30. They sure do like beer on this island.
beer.jpg Click to enlarge

31. Remember in season one that Jin wanted his watch back so badly from Michael and Michael told him it didn’t matter because it didn’t work there anyway? Why does everyone wear watches and how does Ben’s keep perfect time?

35. Mikhail will help John. See last post.

36. What do they need a gemologist for? Maybe they are mining? I’ve been saying this for awhile. They have tunnels underground and dynamite.

When I read that Annie is Kate, it reminded me of the beginning of the season when Kate wakes up. Tom tells her to get cleaned up and leaves her a nice dress. She meets Ben out on the beach for breakfast(?). This was there reunion…at least in Ben’s mind!

  2. Trace Says:

Why don’t you talk about Richard? He is in Ben’s past but looks no older today then he did then. Why doesn’t he age? And if he was there in the past and led the rebellion against the workers- why does it appear he is taking directions from Ben now? I think Richard has more power than we know.

  3. scotty Says:

Maybe rousseau was invovled with Dharama and then they brain washed her left her with a gun and a few other people. Who she later kills because she finds out their others.

  4. Foffman Says:

I read the thing about Kate being Annie, and it was very (very) convincing. It makes sense also because of how she introduced herself as Annie that one time. But here’s what I was wondering about it. In the clips they show of Ben as a child, how old is he? 11? 12? How old is Annie? 10? Maybe not the right numbers, but close. Kate is now 24. If Ben was only 1 or 2, maybe 3 years older than Annie way back when, that puts him in his upper 20’s, maybe 26. And he certainly does not look like he’s 26. (Have you noticed that it’s really difficult to tell how old he is?) Anyway, that’s my two cents.

  5. catalinacrawler Says:

with the bullet hole in that dudes head, i’m guessing that john isnt the first person who’s demanded to see jacob and been brought to that burial site.

  6. catalinacrawler Says:

wait, am i missing something?? who said anything about kate being annie and what evidence is there to support that theory???

  7. Burinetis Says:

I totally agree with Trace!. Why does Richard never grow old?? I don’t thinks he is what he seems to be. It wasn’t just a tiny detail!!

  8. Burinetis Says:

Where did you find that theory of Kate being Annie. Please tell me, I want to read it!

  9. Gitsie Girl Says:

Burinetis: See item # 13. The word “link” is a link. Click on it to go to the article.

  10. Burinetis Says:

    thanks!

  11. Ray Says:

Just a quick one. Ok kids are special. They want walt. They wanna make babies. Why? Is it something to do with Jacob. Can kids see/ hear jacob? And my other thought…Richard! Looks a lot like a pirate when ben first meets him as kid! Doesnt age, i think this is massive. So we can assume that the original hostiles/ natives dont age. Well maybe. Bens not one of them.. he ages. Mickhael ? He has a patch, pirates have patches. i wonder does he age? Anyone any thoughts. Sry about the lack of sentences but its home time..WWWWAAAHHHHOOOO

  12. Harold Says:

I think that Locke will be OK because the bullet passed through his left side where one of his kidneys would be. Since he does not have one kidney he will not have the bleeding which would kill him if the kidney were there.

  13. Scott Cramer Says:

Re: Richard… About 3 minutes in to the episode Ben is sitting in his tent staring at the doll that Annie gave him. Richard enters the tent and says, “What you got there?” Ben says quietly still contemplating the doll, “It’s a birthday present. Mine just happens to be today.” He then gets a bit more of an edge to his voice and says, “You do remember birthdays, don’t you Richard?” Ben then looks up with an almost incriminating glance at Richard. Richard stands there smiling in response almost as if Ben just got a dig in on him. He ignores the entire statement and goes on about his business for why he came into the tent.

Interesting scene… to me it lends to the fact that Richard is a lot older than what he looks.

  14. R Says:

Is that Kate/Annie link serious? It seems to be mocking itself when it says the producers confirmed the theory. Some of it makes sense, but other things don’t add up to Annie being Kate… We’ll all know ALOT more and be asking totally different questions fifteen days from now! One of your best recaps I’ve seen Gitster! Great pictures! But enough with the “my scott” already! Sounds more like the grey’s anatomy recap… ha ha…:)

  15. lil_joey Says:

Hi, how are you? I’m new to this site and it rocks!!!!
I have a feeling (I could be wrong) but those picture of jacob, bear a resemblance to jacks dad, and think about this, in season 1 jack thought he saw his dad and went wandering through the forest looking for him only to find the coffin empty (ah ha)
I think that means something, and remember jacks tattoo, he walks among us but he is not one of us. I don’t know just a theory. food for thought

  16. lil_joey Says:

also another quick food for thought, if alex’s dad is ben, and her mum is danielle, when the hell did ben and danielle meet or get together???????

  17. Ray Says:

Scott. Another idea that i forgot to put down about Mickhael/ richard and the whole not ageing thingy was the idea that rather than the sonic fence not being set to a lethal level, mickhael can in fact not be killed. He is immortal like richard and does not age i.e. an original native/ hostile.
So where does that leave us? Because richards relationship with ben is just weird! Like you pointed out ben getting a dig at him. I keep think bout the third police man and now starting to think about films i ve seen about people selling their souls for immortality. Ben and the rest of the ‘others’ are just like the losties and we aint even got started to know what the natives/ hostiles are all about (of which we know richard is defo one…and maybe mickhael….hhhmmmm)

OK everybody. This is fun discussing Lost and you can critique me, the show, etc… but it’s not an open forum to leave disparaging remarks about other posters or inappropriate language. There are sites out there that encourage and are OK with this kind of discussion and I suggest you find them and leave this site open for Lost dialog.

  22. R Says:

    I still love my Gitsie

  23. Foffman Says:

Haha, yeah, no kidding. If you don’t like LOST, then you don’t have to comment here. Simple as that.

  24. Scott Cramer Says:

    AMEN! ;-)

Enjoy tonight everybody! As usual I will be dead tired by 10 pm… but wide awake at 11 pm!!!

  26. gnid gnid Says:

Ok…I’m late with my comments but, better late than never- right?
Allow me to put some Bibilical take on Jacob: Jacob is considered a ’son of god’. He is the younger of TWINS (being born second) who was said (if I remember correctly) were very different in appearance and behavior. Jacob was seperated from his father when he was young (’daddy issues’). Jacob’s brother chose exile from the family and drank some RED soup to signify his agreement to seperate (cerimony conducted by Jacob -BTW). His brother was an enemy of Jacobs for years to come. Jacob plays a major part in Genesis but important to note is that he married Rachel (who’s father he worked for - hello Jin and Desmond- man does everybody connect with the Jacob refrence). Rachel miscarries for most of their marriage (but Jacob has ‘other wives’ who have babies) (like the women on the island)but eventually gives birth to two sons Joseph and then… her second son = BEN!!! (I’m not making this up - I promise). Different translations vary but the ‘jest’ is that she died giving birth to Ben. Later, when the sons sold Joseph into slavery, Joseph had visions/dreams predicting the future (hello Desmond)… which land him a job with the pharoh. Later, his 11 brothers come to the Pharoh for food and Joseph plants a cup in Ben’s bag that lands him in prison for stealing from the Pharoah.
[sorry this is long] eventually, the 10 remining brothers go out to ‘populate’ and are referred to as the “10 Lost Tribes”.
    So… what do you think???
Forgive my mis-translations from the Bible - I’m doin’ the best I can from the ole’ memory bank

  27. Gitsie Girl Says:

    Gnid Gnid, *VERY* interesting stuff!

Maybe there aren’t 10 tribes, but the remaining Dharma may have split off into tribes around the island.

I keep wanting to think that Jacob and Ben are brothers, but I’m not making the mental connection yet based on what we know. But I would say that Jacob is in exile and Ben put him there. Enemies? Definitely.

  28. Cas Kruse Says:

Anyone notice that Jacob was wearing VERY old style clothing…like perhaps he may have been the captain of a ship…maybe the one at Black Rock??

  29. Heather Says:

OK, I have to go back and read all the comments, but… how can Annie be Kate? Annie and Ben were the same age (give or take a few years), whereas Ben is old enough to be Kate’s father! He’s almost 53 in real life, and EL is almost 28; even if you stretch things a bit in either direction for the sake of artistic license (in terms of the characters’ ages), there’s no way the age discrepancy can be reconciled.

  30. william Says:

for #27… it looks like a polar bear.

  31. Scott Cramer Says:

william - #27 - that would make more sense but I just can’t make out a polar bear. Seems like the head and front legs would be closer and more visible together. Still - as weird as it seems - looks like a big shaggy dog sitting upright on it’s haunches. Will have to look closer later…

Props guys either have a really fun job on LOST or a really HARD job… gotta say that.

  32. william Says:

i just sent you a pic kind’a showing the polar bear image i see…

  33. lil_joey Says:

i just had a lookback at #27 and if you enlarge it it sort of looks like vincent, walts dog????????????

  34. william Says:

I figured with the wide face it was the bear, but yep… it could also be a dog.

I emailed my ‘rendering’ to info@gitsiegirl.com, but haven’t seen a reply/posting for it yet.
